Epic pays for free-game promotions as a cost of growing the Epic Games Store: the offers bring games and players to the platform, while the Store earns money separately from paid-game transactions and other commercial activity. Epic says the program drives discovery and engagement, but it has not disclosed a current total giveaway budget, the payment terms for each title, or whether the program earns back its cost.
What “free” means for the player
When a player claims a promoted game, Epic says the game remains in the account library as a digital license. The player pays nothing for that license during the offer, but the promotion still has an economic cost—whether through a payment to the publisher, a promotional arrangement, or another agreement. Epic does not publish the terms for each giveaway. Epic Games Store FAQs
Why Epic runs the program
Epic describes free games as a way to increase discovery and engagement on its Store. In its February 3, 2026 year-in-review, Epic said the program “continued to drive discovery and engagement.” That is Epic’s stated rationale; the figures it reports show reach and activity, not that recipients later buy games or that the program pays for itself. Epic Games Store 2025 Year in Review
- Players claimed 662 million titles through the program in 2025. This is a count of titles claimed, not unique players.
- More than 77% of the games offered free in 2025 reached an all-time peak concurrent-user record on the Store during their offer week. That measures activity during the promotion, not later sales.
- Epic also reported an increase in Steam concurrent users for games while they were being offered. The company’s figures indicate attention across platforms, not a direct financial return for Epic.
How the Store makes money around giveaways
Free offers sit alongside paid sales, but Epic has not publicly identified a specific revenue stream as the funding source for any individual promotion. Store sales demonstrate commercial activity; they should not be mistaken for Epic’s profit or for a dedicated giveaway fund.

Epic reported that players spent $1.16 billion on the Store in 2025, a 6% year-over-year increase. Players spent $400 million on third-party PC games, up 57%; Epic says that figure excludes some games whose developers process their own in-game payments. Both are player-spending figures, not Epic net revenue. Epic Games Store 2025 Year in Review
Revenue sharing on eligible sales
Epic’s current distribution materials describe a standard 88% share for developers and 12% for Epic on qualifying Epic-processed payments. Under the program announced in 2025, developers keep 100% of the first $1 million in annual net revenue per product, after which the 88%/12% split applies; the terms reset annually from 2026. Developers may also use their own payment systems inside games, from which Epic says it takes no revenue. Epic Games Store Distribution Epic’s revenue-share update

For games made with Unreal Engine, Epic says engine royalties are waived for qualifying in-Store purchases processed by Epic. That waiver does not apply to in-app purchases or purchases handled through a developer’s own payment processor. These terms describe the wider Store business model; they do not say that commissions or waived royalties pay for a particular giveaway.
Free-to-play games are related context, not a documented earmark
Epic also operates free-to-play games with optional paid content. That broader business is relevant to the company’s ability to invest in its Store, but the available public material does not trace revenue from Fortnite or another specific game to any individual free-game offer. It would be speculation to say that Fortnite pays for a particular giveaway.

What older court findings tell us—and what they do not
In its 2021 findings in Epic Games, Inc. v. Apple Inc., a federal court described the Store’s 88/12 commission structure as below cost and said Epic expected the Store to operate at a loss for many years at that rate. This is historical evidence that Epic treated Store growth as a long-term investment, not a statement of the Store’s current financial condition or the present cost and return of free-game promotions. Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What is not publicly known
- Epic’s current aggregate budget or total spending on free-game promotions.
- The amount or other terms paid or offered for any specific game.
- Whether claims lead to enough later purchases or Store activity to recover promotion costs.
- A direct allocation of Fortnite revenue, Unreal Engine royalties, or other company income to a particular offer.
So the clearest answer is that Epic funds the promotions as part of its investment in Store discovery and engagement, while relying on a broader business that includes paid transactions. Public reporting establishes the program’s scale and the Store’s commercial activity, but not a precise funding trail or proof of profitability.
