In traditional freshwater carp ponds, several species are raised together because they feed on different natural foods; farmers may add grasses, vegetables or local by-products, and fertilize ponds to encourage plankton. More intensive systems may use formulated pellets. The detailed feeding examples available are historical or specific to particular places, so they do not show how common each practice is on farms today.
Why traditional carp ponds raise several species together
Traditional freshwater aquaculture in China has often used polyculture: raising fish with different feeding habits in the same pond. The aim is to make use of different food sources in the water rather than rely on one species or a single feed. An FAO account describes Chinese major carps being raised alongside other species with complementary diets (FAO, Freshwater Fisheries and Aquaculture in China).
The species do not all eat the same things. Their natural diets help explain the logic of a mixed pond:
- Grass carp: higher plants, including grasses and vegetables.
- Silver carp: mainly phytoplankton.
- Bighead carp: mainly zooplankton.
- Black carp: molluscs, including snails and clams in examples from the lower Yangtze.
- Mud carp: detritus and related material.
- Common carp and crucian carp: benthic food found near the pond bottom.
These fish also use different parts of the water column, according to an FAO overview of aquaculture systems (FAO aquaculture systems overview). The precise species mix and feeding practice depend on the farm; the historical accounts are not a universal present-day recipe.

What farmers may add to the pond
Plants and locally available materials
Historical FAO observations describe farmers growing grasses and vegetables along pond banks and dikes for grass carp. They also record locally available materials such as silkworm pupae in places where they were produced, and snails or clams for black carp in particular lower Yangtze examples. These are regional examples from the report, not evidence that every Chinese farm uses those foods.
Other documented supplemental feeds include processing by-products such as rice or wheat bran and soybean or peanut oilseed cake. Their use reflects local availability and the older production systems described in FAO material; it should not be read as a current nationwide feed formula (FAO policy review of Chinese aquaculture).

- Nutrena Nature's Canvas Trophy Fish Feed is a 36% protein fish feed designed to be fed to bluegill, catfish, bass, brim, tilapia, and other farm pond species in a recreational feeding program.
- Multi-species fish formula with Pond Balancing Technology to help promote optimal growth and production rates with larger floating nuggets for larger fish and smaller sinking nuggets for smaller, bottom-dwelling fish.
- Fortified with vitamins to ensure fish are receiving the correct nutrients for growth.
- Highly palatable to maximize intake and viewing.
- Special formula to support digestibility and nutrient absorption.
Fertilizing water to grow natural food
Organic manure and fish waste can help fertilize pond water and encourage plankton growth. This supports fish such as silver and bighead carp that feed on plankton. It is a way to produce natural food in the pond, not the same thing as giving fish pellets.
How feeding changes with the production system
FAO describes aquaculture systems along a spectrum: extensive ponds rely primarily on natural food, semi-intensive systems add supplementary feed, and intensive systems use artificial feeds. Those categories help explain why the answer varies from farm to farm:

- Extensive: fish depend mainly on food that develops naturally in the pond.
- Semi-intensive: natural pond food is supplemented with materials supplied by the farmer.
- Intensive: formulated feeds, including pellets, play a central role.
As production becomes more intensive, or when farmers raise species with different nutritional requirements, formulated feeds can be used instead of relying only on pond food and inexpensive local materials. FAO’s historical policy review describes development of formulated pellets from the early 1980s for grass carp, common carp, tilapia and Chinese bream (FAO policy review of Chinese aquaculture).
China’s official standards service lists a national standard project titled “Aquatic feed—Part 12: Formula feed for Crucian carp” (China National Standard Information Public Service Platform). The listing establishes that a formal standard project exists; by itself, it does not establish whether the project has been implemented, how widely the feed is available, or how many farms use it.

What the evidence does—and does not—show about current practice
The specific feed examples come from historical accounts or observations tied to particular places, while the official standards listing concerns a standards project. Together, they show several approaches: using species with complementary natural diets, supplying plant matter or local by-products, fertilizing ponds to grow natural food, and using formulated feeds in some systems. They do not establish the present-day share of Chinese farms using pellets, current feed quantities, or a province-by-province pattern.
One historical figure gives context but should not be mistaken for a current estimate: an FAO policy review reported that by the end of 1999 China produced 55.52 million tonnes of compound feed annually, including about 5 million tonnes of fish feed. That figure describes output at that time, not today’s production or the proportion of farms using formulated feed (FAO policy review of Chinese aquaculture).
