How Dividend Kings Compare With the S&P 500 for Income and Growth

Dividend Kings are not the same as the S&P 500 Dividend Aristocrats. Compare their rules, weighting, dated returns, and what the available evidence can—and cannot—say about income and growth.

Short answer: the available official return figures show that the S&P 500 outperformed the S&P 500 Dividend Aristocrats Index over the 15 years through December 31, 2025. That is useful context, but it is not a direct test of every Dividend King: “Dividend Kings” is a market label, not a single official index with one agreed membership list or portfolio weighting. And the available figures do not establish which group currently pays more income.

To compare the labels fairly, separate the usual 50-year dividend-increase rule from the Aristocrats index’s 25-year rule, then distinguish dividend income from total return. The evidence supports a dated comparison of the broad S&P 500 with the official Aristocrats index—not a definitive Kings-versus-S&P verdict.

What Dividend Kings and the S&P 500 actually represent

Dividend Kings commonly refers to companies that have raised their annual dividend for at least 50 consecutive years. It is a market label, not the name of one official index with a universally fixed membership list. A company does not have to belong to the S&P 500 to qualify under this common definition.

The S&P 500 is a broad U.S. large-company stock index. S&P Dow Jones Indices says it includes 500 leading companies and covers approximately 80% of available U.S. market capitalization. The index is float-adjusted market-cap weighted, so companies with larger eligible market values generally have larger weights. The index provider describes it as “widely regarded as the best single gauge of large-cap U.S. equities.”

The S&P 500 Dividend Aristocrats Index is a separate, rules-based index. It measures S&P 500 companies that have increased dividends every year for at least 25 consecutive years. Unlike the general Kings label, it requires S&P 500 membership. It equally weights its constituent companies, so a smaller constituent can have a similar starting portfolio weight to a much larger one.

These distinctions matter: a 50-year streak and a 25-year streak are different qualifications; Kings may sit outside the S&P 500; and the two indexes use different weighting methods. The Aristocrats are a useful, official dividend-growth comparison, but they are not synonymous with all Dividend Kings.

Did Dividend Kings or the S&P 500 deliver more growth?

The clearest dated comparison available is between the S&P 500 and the Dividend Aristocrats Index. For the 15 years through December 31, 2025, S&P Dow Jones Indices reported annualized total returns of 14.1% for the S&P 500 and 11.8% for the Aristocrats. The difference is 2.3 percentage points a year over that period.

“Annualized total return” expresses a multi-year result as a compounded yearly rate. “Total return” includes reinvested distributions, rather than measuring only changes in index price. These numbers therefore answer a historical growth question about the two indexes as defined; they do not mean that every S&P 500 investment earned precisely 14.1% each year or that every Aristocrat lagged every broad-market stock.

The comparison cannot be relabeled as a result for all Dividend Kings. The Aristocrats index has a 25-year threshold and an S&P 500 membership requirement; a Kings list commonly uses a 50-year threshold and may include companies outside the S&P 500. The index’s equal weighting also differs from the S&P 500’s float-adjusted market-cap weighting. Its returns reflect both the securities included and the way they are weighted.

Consequently, the figures support a narrow conclusion: over this specified 15-year period, the S&P 500’s reported annualized total return exceeded the Aristocrats’ reported annualized total return. They do not settle whether a chosen list of Kings beat the S&P 500 over the same dates.

The result is specific to the start and end dates, the index rules, and the reinvestment assumption. A different measurement window could produce a different ranking. The dashboard’s figures are in U.S. dollars and carry a past-performance caveat; they are historical evidence, not a forecast or a recommendation. Nor should an index figure be read as the return an investor would necessarily have received from a fund, since fund expenses and tracking differences affect realized results.

Which pays more income: Dividend Kings or the S&P 500?

The available evidence does not provide a matched current-yield comparison for a defined Dividend Kings portfolio and the S&P 500. There is no single official Kings index or standard Kings weighting to supply a common portfolio yield, and a yield changes as both a company’s dividend and its share price change. A confident statement that “Kings pay more” would need a specific list, calculation date, and consistent yield method.

Even with a dated yield for each side, check that the figures measure the same thing. A stock’s indicated yield—often calculated from its current share price and an annualized dividend—cannot be compared casually with an index’s trailing yield, which may use distributions over a past period. The numerator, price date, and annualization method should match or be clearly disclosed. A higher yield on one date is not, by itself, proof of higher future income or better performance.

For a practical income comparison, identify the exact portfolio first, then compare its yield on the same date and under the same calculation method. If a published “Kings” figure is based on a third-party list, treat it as that publisher’s basket rather than as an official universal Kings yield. Without those details, the responsible answer is that the current income comparison is not established by the available figures.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Also separate the amount of income from the ability to grow it. The 50-year label says that a company has a long record of annual increases; it does not say what its current yield is, how large its recent increases have been, or how much cash a particular investor will receive. An investor focused on income may care about the portfolio’s cash distributions at a given date, while an investor focused on long-term growth may compare reinvested total returns. Those are related but different questions.

Does a 50-year dividend streak mean better dividend growth?

A long streak is evidence that a company maintained a policy of raising its annual dividend through many past conditions. It is not a promise that the next increase will occur, that a dividend will never be cut, or that the stock will deliver superior total returns. A 50-year qualification speaks to the record used to classify a company; it is not a forecast.

“Dividend growth” can also mean different things. The streak rule asks whether the annual dividend rose from one year to the next. It does not, by itself, tell you how large each increase was, how quickly the dividend grew over a recent period, or how much income an investor receives at today’s share price. Those questions need their own comparable, dated measures.

Income and growth are related but distinct. A portfolio can distribute income while also gaining or losing market value. Yield alone omits capital gains and losses; total return combines those changes with distributions, typically assuming distributions are reinvested in the index calculation. An investor spending dividends rather than reinvesting them will experience a different cash-flow pattern from a total-return calculation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A streak is therefore one data point for evaluating a dividend policy, not a complete measure of investment quality. It does not tell you how concentrated a portfolio is, how it performed in a selected period, or what an investor pays to access it through a fund. Those additional dimensions need to be evaluated separately rather than inferred from the label.

Why weighting changes the comparison

The S&P 500: larger companies have larger weights

Float-adjusted market-cap weighting ties each company’s index weight to its eligible market value. As a result, a constituent’s effect on the index is not equal to every other constituent’s effect. This is one reason an index-level result should not be treated as the average return of its member companies.

The S&P 500’s scale also matters: S&P Dow Jones Indices says it covers approximately 80% of available market capitalization. Its role as a broad large-company benchmark is different from a portfolio selected around a long dividend-increase history. The two may overlap in holdings, but they are constructed to represent different things.

The Aristocrats: equal weights across constituents

The Aristocrats Index equally weights its companies. That construction gives each constituent a more similar starting influence than a market-cap-weighted portfolio, though weights can change between rebalancing dates as prices move. A return difference between this index and the S&P 500 may reflect the weighting approach as well as dividend rules and constituent selection.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Kings: the basket must be specified

Because the Kings label does not prescribe one official portfolio, a comparison needs a declared membership list and weighting rule. One analyst could use equal weights; another might weight by market capitalization or by income. Those are different portfolios, even if both use companies described as Kings. There is no sound way to infer one universal Kings return from a result for the Aristocrats index.

How to make a fair Kings-versus-S&P comparison

  1. Choose and date the Kings list. State which publisher’s membership definition you are using and the list’s as-of date. Confirm that the companies meet the stated streak rule on that date; do not assume all lists have identical membership.
  2. Set the portfolio weights. Specify equal weighting, market-cap weighting, or another rule, along with when the portfolio is rebalanced. If the chosen list contains companies outside the S&P 500, keep them in the Kings portfolio if the aim is to represent that list rather than only S&P 500 members.
  3. Align the measurement period. Use the same start and end dates for both portfolios. Identify whether the comparison begins with actual index history or includes a hypothetical back-tested period; some index histories include back-tests before launch.
  4. Compare like with like. Keep U.S.-dollar treatment, dividend-reinvestment assumptions, and return type consistent. Report both total return and price return if the question includes growth, and state whether results are index calculations or fund returns after costs.
  5. Measure income on the same date and basis. Use a consistent yield definition for each portfolio and identify the calculation date. Do not place an individual stock’s indicated yield beside an index’s trailing yield without explaining the difference.
  6. Include risks and implementation costs. For investable funds, check fees, tracking differences, and fund-specific risks. For an investor’s actual after-tax income, account for the rules of the investor’s jurisdiction rather than assuming a single tax treatment applies to everyone.

This process does not guarantee that one portfolio is preferable. It makes the comparison interpretable: a reader can see which constituents, weights, dates, income measure, and return assumptions produced the result.

For a more complete comparison, include volatility or drawdown, sector and company concentration, and fees when comparable figures are available. These measures can reveal differences that a single yield or return number misses. The current figures here do not supply matched values for those measures, so they should not be guessed or used to imply that one portfolio is inherently safer.

Can an ETF stand in for Dividend Kings?

NOBL is an adjacent implementation option, not a fund holding every company commonly called a Dividend King. ProShares says NOBL seeks to track the S&P 500 Dividend Aristocrats Index before fees and expenses. Its benchmark uses the Aristocrats’ 25-year annual-increase rule and S&P 500 membership requirement, rather than the commonly used 50-year Kings label.

A fund’s return need not match its benchmark index exactly: expenses and tracking differences affect the result, and investors buy shares whose market value can fluctuate. ProShares warns that an investor’s shares, when sold or redeemed, may be worth more or less than their original cost. Historical index returns should therefore not be presented as a guaranteed or exact fund result.

Before choosing an ETF as an implementation, verify its current fund details, expenses, benchmark, and availability. A fund tied to the Aristocrats index can provide exposure to that rules-based strategy, but it cannot answer a question about the full, informally defined Kings universe unless its holdings and methodology actually match the chosen Kings definition.

What the historical figures do—and do not—tell you

  • They do show: the reported 15-year annualized total return through December 31, 2025 was 14.1% for the S&P 500 and 11.8% for the S&P 500 Dividend Aristocrats Index.
  • They do not show: an official return for every possible Kings list, a matched current yield for a defined Kings portfolio, or a forecast for future income and performance.
  • They are not fund returns: index figures do not automatically include an ETF’s fees, tracking differences, or an individual investor’s taxes.
  • They should be kept dated: market prices, yields, constituents, and returns change. The dashboard’s figures are historical observations in U.S. dollars and include a past-performance caveat.

For a reader deciding between income-oriented holdings and a broad-market investment, the most useful next question is not simply which label sounds safer. It is which defined portfolio offers an appropriate combination of current income, dividend policy, diversification, costs, and total-return risk for that investor’s goals and time horizon.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do Dividend Kings beat the S&P 500?

There is no single official Dividend Kings portfolio with a standard membership list and weighting, so the answer depends on how the basket is defined. The dated official comparison here is for the S&P 500 Dividend Aristocrats Index, not all Kings: through December 31, 2025, S&P Dow Jones Indices reported annualized 15-year total returns of 11.8% for the Aristocrats and 14.1% for the S&P 500.

Which pays more income, Dividend Kings or the S&P 500?

The available figures do not establish a matched current-yield comparison for a defined Kings portfolio and the S&P 500. To answer it, choose a dated Kings list and portfolio weighting, then compare yields calculated on the same date and by the same method. A stock’s indicated yield and an index’s trailing yield are not automatically comparable.

Are Dividend Kings better for dividend growth?

A 50-year annual dividend-increase record shows past policy continuity, but it does not guarantee future increases or tell you how large recent increases were. Compare dividend growth using a defined period and consistent figures, and consider total return separately because yield and dividend growth do not include the full effect of price gains or losses.

Is NOBL a Dividend Kings ETF?

Not in the sense of tracking every company commonly called a King. ProShares says NOBL seeks to track the S&P 500 Dividend Aristocrats Index before fees and expenses. That index requires S&P 500 membership and a 25-year annual dividend-increase streak, rather than the commonly used 50-year Kings label.

Can I use the 15-year index returns to estimate what a fund investor earned?

Not exactly. Index figures are not fund returns after expenses or tracking differences, and an individual investor’s taxes can also affect results. ProShares cautions that NOBL shares may be worth more or less than their original cost when sold or redeemed. Historical returns are not a promise of future performance.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: “Dividend Kings” is a commonly used 50-year dividend-increase label, not one official index, while the S&P 500 Dividend Aristocrats Index uses a 25-year rule and requires S&P 500 membership. For the 15 years through December 31, 2025, S&P Dow Jones Indices reported 14.1% annualized total return for the S&P 500 and 11.8% for the Aristocrats. That is a dated comparison of those two indexes—not proof that the full Kings universe underperformed, nor evidence of which portfolio currently yields more. A fair decision needs a defined Kings list, aligned dates and yield methods, consistent weighting and reinvestment assumptions, and attention to fund costs and risk.
