Treasure Planet earned less in worldwide theatrical gross than its reported production budget, but its financial result does not tell the whole story of its reception. Years later, the directors recalled fans calling it a favorite and turning up in cosplay. Those memories point to lasting affection—not to a measurable “cult classic” status or a proven explanation for why the film underperformed.
What was Treasure Planet—and when did it open?
Disney’s Treasure Planet reimagines Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island as a science-fiction adventure. It follows Jim Hawkins and a spacefaring crew on a hunt for treasure. John Musker and Ron Clements directed the film.
D23 records an earlier Paris premiere and French release. Disney lists November 27, 2002, as the U.S. release date. D23’s release-history entry provides the chronology, while Disney’s film page gives the synopsis and U.S. date.
How did the theatrical numbers compare with the budget?
Box Office Mojo reports a $140 million production budget and $110,041,919 in worldwide theatrical gross. Its listed domestic gross is $38,176,783, with $71,864,580 internationally. The worldwide gross is therefore below the reported production budget, but that comparison is not a calculation of profit or loss.

| Box Office Mojo figure | Amount |
|---|---|
| Reported production budget | $140 million |
| Domestic theatrical gross | $38,176,783 |
| International theatrical gross | $71,864,580 |
| Worldwide theatrical gross | $110,041,919 |
These figures are the amounts listed on Box Office Mojo’s title page, accessed October 8, 2026. The box-office totals are gross receipts, not the amount Disney necessarily received. They do not account for distribution arrangements, theater shares, marketing, or other costs and revenue streams, so they cannot establish the studio’s precise loss.
Why did Treasure Planet flop?
The available figures establish that reported theatrical gross fell short of the reported production budget; they do not establish why audiences did or did not see the film. Release timing, marketing, competition, genre, and audience taste may be raised as possible factors, but the evidence here does not show that any one of them was decisive.

Producer Roy Conli has discussed the substantial labor and expense involved in animation in an interview with Den of Geek. That is useful context for the commercial pressure of a costly animated production, not an explanation of this film’s particular box-office performance.
What made the film visually distinctive?
Musker and Clements said they wanted a warm, romantic-adventure feel rather than the cold, metallic look they associated with science fiction. That choice helps explain the film’s mix of space travel and a classic sailing-adventure atmosphere: its futuristic setting is shaped to evoke the spirit of a sea voyage, not just machinery and technology.

In a 2017 D23 interview, the directors also discussed pitching the idea in 1985 and using Deep Canvas, technology they had worked with on Tarzan. The visual ambition was part of the film’s identity, even though it did not guarantee a hit with theatrical audiences.

The clearest evidence in the available sources is personal and specific. In D23’s 2017 interview, the directors recalled seeing cosplayers at D23 Expo and hearing fans describe the film as a favorite. Clements said some people told them, “It’s my favorite animated movie,” or even, “It’s my favorite movie I’ve ever seen!” Musker recalled an enthusiastic screening at Hollywood’s El Capitan Theatre and said, “It was really exhilarating.”

Those recollections support the idea of a durable, devoted fan following in the settings the directors described. They are not audience-survey results, do not measure the size of that following, and do not identify a precise moment when the film’s reputation shifted. “Cult classic” is best understood here as a description of lasting fan affection, not a formal or quantified industry category.
D23 records a 2003 video release, giving audiences another way to encounter the film after its theatrical run. That makes home viewing a plausible part of its afterlife, but the release record alone does not show how much video viewing—or later streaming—contributed to its reputation. Disney’s official page associates the title with Disney+, but availability can vary by territory.
