How Discover Cash Back Works: 2026 Categories, Activation, and Redemption

Discover’s 5% Cashback Bonus is a quarterly offer: eligible Discover it® and Discover® More® cardmembers activate the quarter’s categories, then earn 5% on qualifying purchases up to the quarter’s spending cap. In 2026, the cap is $1,500 in eligible category purchases per quarter, or at most $75 in bonus rewards. Purchases that do not qualify for the active 5% offer generally earn the program’s automatic 1% rate. The category name alone does not guarantee that a merchant or transaction qualifies; check the current offer terms and your account before spending.

How does Discover’s 5% Cashback Bonus program work?

The program combines a rotating quarterly offer with a baseline earning rate. Each quarter, Discover names specific purchase categories that can earn 5% after activation. Eligible purchases in those categories count toward that quarter’s cap. The 2026 calendar sets the cap at $1,500 in category purchases per quarter, equivalent to up to $75 in 5% rewards. Discover describes the 1% rate as automatic and unlimited on other purchases outside the active 5% program. These rates apply to eligible transactions under the offer terms, not simply to purchases that seem to fit a category.

Discover says it calculates 5% rewards by multiplying eligible Program Purchases by 5%, and adds the rewards within two billing periods. The purchase must satisfy the offer’s rules, including its category, merchant, timing, and transaction requirements. A purchase that misses the 5% rules may still earn the applicable 1% rate, but do not assume that every disputed or excluded transaction will be treated the same way; consult the terms or ask Discover about the specific transaction.

Which categories are active in 2026?

The 2026 schedule below applies to eligible Discover it® and Discover® More® cardmembers. The quarter’s calendar is not a promise that every business with a matching name or product will qualify. Review the active offer in your account and its category footnotes before relying on a merchant to earn 5%.

Purchase period 2026 categories Practical check
January–March Grocery Stores, Wholesale Clubs, and Select Streaming Services “Select” matters: confirm the streaming service appears to meet the offer terms.
April–June Restaurants and Home Improvement Stores Merchant classification, not just what you buy, can determine eligibility.
July–September Gas Stations, Transportation, and Drug Stores Check the current offer details for what Discover includes in each category.
October–December Restaurants, Entertainment, and Utilities For Q4, the offer runs through December 31, 2026, or through the later date you activate if you activate after October 1.

Discover’s 2026 5% Cash Back Calendar is the reference for the schedule and calendar-specific terms. Categories change over time, so do not use an old calendar to plan a later quarter.

How do you activate a quarterly category?

Activation is required each quarter; having activated in a prior quarter does not activate the new one. Discover says activation is free and available in its mobile app, online account, or by phone at 1-800-DISCOVER (1-800-347-2683). Its formal terms also list one-click email activation. Discover may prevent activation based on account status.

  1. Check eligibility and the active offer. Sign in to the account for the card you plan to use and confirm the quarter’s categories and applicable terms. Discover’s current public calendar is specifically for eligible Discover it® and Discover® More® cardmembers.
  2. Activate before relying on the offer. Use the activation option shown in the Discover mobile app or online account, follow a one-click activation email if available, or call 1-800-DISCOVER (1-800-347-2683). Activation costs nothing.
  3. Confirm the account shows activation. Keep the confirmation or check the account’s Cashback Bonus area before making planned purchases. If the option is unavailable, the account may not be eligible to activate under Discover’s terms; contact Discover rather than assuming the offer is active.
  4. Track category purchases against the quarter’s cap. Include purchases you expect to qualify, while allowing for the possibility that an apparently eligible merchant or payment method will not code as required. Do not count purchases toward the 5% threshold until Discover recognizes them as eligible.

Discover’s Cash Back Rewards Summary describes the free activation options and the current offer details. Its Discover it® Card Terms and Conditions specify the formal activation methods and eligibility limits.

When does a purchase count?

For a purchase to earn the 5% rate, it must be made during the offer period, fall within a category as Discover defines it, and be processed in a way that meets the offer requirements. The calendar specifies purchases from U.S. merchants. Merchants and payment processors use merchant category codes (MCCs); Discover warns that a business that appears to fit a category may not have an MCC in that category. The merchant’s public-facing name, the item purchased, or the shopper’s intended use is not conclusive.

Payment details can also affect the result. Some third-party payment accounts and digital-wallet transactions may not earn 5% if the transaction technology does not supply enough detail or a qualifying MCC. If maximizing the category reward matters, paying the merchant directly with the eligible card may make the transaction easier to identify, but it cannot guarantee eligibility. The offer terms and the transaction’s actual processing control.

Use the current category footnotes, not a broad label

Q4 2026 illustrates why the details matter. Discover says restaurant purchases include merchants classified as full-service restaurants, cafes, cafeterias, fast-food locations, and caterers. Restaurants inside or affiliated with hotels or retail stores, and establishments classified as bakeries, may not qualify. A restaurant-branded location may therefore be treated differently depending on its classification.

For utilities, the Q4 offer excludes or may exclude certain purchases such as home fuel delivery, standalone streaming, certain satellite phone and internet services, vehicle connectivity, accessories, or equipment. These are examples, not a complete replacement for the offer’s footnotes. Read the current quarter’s category descriptions for the exact boundaries rather than inferring coverage from a bill’s label or a provider’s business.

Pay attention to the transaction date

The transaction date must fall on or before the final day of the quarterly offer. An online order placed before the quarter ends may not qualify if the merchant assigns its transaction date based on a later ship date. For instance, placing an order on the last day is not enough if it is processed with a transaction date after the offer expires. Allow time for the merchant’s processing and shipping practices, especially near quarter-end.

What happens after you reach the quarterly cap?

The 5% rate applies only up to $1,500 in eligible category purchases in that quarter. At 5%, that amount produces no more than $75 in quarterly bonus rewards. The cap is on eligible purchases, not on the reward balance you can accumulate over time. Once eligible category spending reaches the cap, do not expect additional category purchases to keep earning 5% under that quarter’s offer. Discover describes unlimited 1% as applying to other purchases outside the 5% program; check your account and terms for how subsequent transactions are treated.

As a simple illustration of the arithmetic, $100 in qualifying purchases at 5% produces $5 in Cashback Bonus; $100 at 1% produces $1. This example assumes the transaction qualifies at the stated rate and is not a statement about any particular merchant or purchase. Reward posting can lag the purchase: Discover’s terms say the 5% rewards are added within two billing periods.

How can you redeem Cashback Bonus?

Discover’s current summary says cardmembers can redeem in any amount to help pay down the card balance or select gift cards. The formal terms list account redemption channels, but which options are available can depend on the account. Gift cards have a minimum redemption amount; Discover’s cited summary does not state a single threshold, so check the amount shown in your account before choosing one. Discover also says an electronic transfer to a new, unverified deposit account may be unavailable in limited situations.

Use the account’s Cashback Bonus or rewards area to review available choices and the amount required for each one, then follow the on-screen redemption steps. The account display is the practical place to confirm which options are available to you; the formal card terms govern the redemption methods and applicable conditions.

Do rewards expire?

Discover says Cashback Bonus does not expire while the account remains open. If the account closes, Discover says it will send a check or credit the account, while reserving the method of disbursement. That does not guarantee that a cardmember can choose a particular payout method after closure. The current rewards summary contains the expiration and account-closure details.

A practical checklist before you spend

  • Confirm the card and account are eligible for the offer, then verify that this quarter’s activation is recorded.
  • Read the active category footnotes, including exclusions and merchant-classification requirements.
  • Check whether the merchant is likely to process the charge with a qualifying MCC and sufficient transaction detail; a wallet or payment intermediary can complicate that determination.
  • Make sure the transaction date—not just the order date—falls within the offer period, especially for shipped orders near quarter-end.
  • Keep track of eligible category spending against the $1,500 quarterly cap and allow up to two billing periods for rewards to be added.
  • Before redeeming, compare the amount you want to use with the options, thresholds, and account-verification limits displayed in your Discover account.
