Neither Home Depot nor Lowe’s is the better choice for every project. Compare the exact products and quantities you need, local stock, the full order cost, delivery or pickup options, and any rental or installation service involved. DIY shoppers should start with the project list and local availability; contractors should also weigh account tools, jobsite delivery, purchasing controls, and how well each store fits their crew’s routine.
How to choose between Home Depot and Lowe’s
For a one-off repair, the more useful store is usually the one that has the right items available nearby and can get them to you on the day you need them. For a larger renovation or a contractor’s recurring purchases, delivery reliability, rental access, installation scope, and account workflows can matter as much as the shelf price.

Official company pages describe substantial overlap: both retailers serve DIY and professional customers, offer fulfillment options, and provide access to installation or rental services. Those descriptions do not establish which store is cheaper for a given basket, has better service, or performs installations better nationwide. The result can vary by ZIP code, project, and order.
- DIY project: Compare the exact product, model, quantity, local stock, and pickup or delivery timing.
- Contractor purchase: Compare the project’s complete basket and delivery plan, then check whether account tools support quoting, authorization, tracking, and job-level purchasing.
- Rental or installation: Get local availability, a written scope or quote, timing, and applicable terms before deciding.
At a glance: the practical differences
| Decision point | What the retailers describe | What to verify for your project |
|---|---|---|
| Products and stock | Both position themselves as broad home-project retailers; the available information does not compare specific product assortments or prices. | Exact item and model, quantity, local stock, substitutions, and return conditions. |
| Pro purchasing tools | Lowe’s describes quoting, volume savings, purchase authorization, and multi-delivery scheduling. Home Depot describes Pro project planning, inventory visibility, delivery preferences, and team collaboration. | Whether the tools are available to your account and fit your purchasing, job-costing, and crew-approval process; compare current terms. |
| Delivery and pickup | Both describe delivery and pickup. Home Depot announced U.S. Express Delivery in August 2026 with a stated delivery window of three hours or less for eligible orders, subject to conditions. | ZIP-code eligibility, item eligibility, fee, order cutoff, delivery window, truck access, and jobsite restrictions. |
| Tool access | Home Depot describes tool and truck rental; Lowe’s Pro materials also list Lowe’s Rental. | Local inventory, rental duration, deposits, transportation, and whether buying is more practical for repeated use. |
| Installation | Both describe installation services, with examples of service categories on their corporate pages. | Written scope and quote, installer, timing, warranty, preparation, and permit responsibilities. |
| Rewards and savings | Both publish Pro-focused benefits. Lowe’s lists MyLowe’s Pro Rewards features; Home Depot describes Pro Xtra tools and benefits. | Eligibility, exclusions, qualifying spend, reward expiry, delivery terms, and the actual price of your basket. |
What Lowe’s offers DIY shoppers and contractors
Pro Desk and purchasing support
Lowe’s Pro page describes Pro Desk assistance with blueprint takeoffs, products, quotes, credit, and accounts. It also lists Pro-preferred delivery, bulk savings, business credit cards, Lowe’s Rental, and installation services. These features may be useful when a project involves a detailed materials list, larger quantities, or several purchasing steps. Ask the local store what support is available for your project and account rather than assuming every service or offer applies everywhere.

MyLowe’s Pro Rewards and online tools
The MyLowe’s Pro Rewards program page describes points and rewards, member deals, online quoting, volume savings, scan to pay, multi-delivery scheduling, and purchase authorization. It also describes a free-delivery benefit with exclusions and an eligible-paint benefit tied to a qualifying-spend threshold. The terms are subject to change, so confirm the current rules, thresholds, eligible purchases, and exclusions before treating a benefit as a discount.
The Lowe’s program page, accessed October 10, 2026, stated that 100 points equal $1 in MyLowe’s Money. That is a program conversion, not a guaranteed reduction in the price of a particular project: eligibility, redemption rules, exclusions, and point expiry affect the value you realize.
Expanded digital tools for smaller Pros
In a February 17, 2026 release, Lowe’s said it was expanding Pro Extended Aisle access and digital quoting and purchasing tools for small-to-medium Pros. The release describes direct-to-jobsite delivery from participating suppliers, quotes and order tracking, purchase history, spend reports by job or client, and “Buy It Again” reordering. These are capabilities Lowe’s announced; they are not an independent test of delivery performance or a guarantee that every item, supplier, or location is covered. Confirm what is available for the products and jobs you actually manage.

Lowe’s corporate business page describes shopping through its website or app, pickup, curbside pickup, home delivery, and parcel shipping. It also lists installation examples including windows, flooring, roofing, and kitchens. Those categories do not tell you whether a particular job is eligible, how soon it can be scheduled, or what preparation is included. Request the local scope and quote for the specific work.

What Home Depot offers DIY shoppers and contractors
Project planning and fulfillment
Home Depot’s corporate overview describes app-based project calculators and product location, truck and tool rental, delivery, and in-store pickup. Its Pro Xtra article describes project planning, catalog browsing, inventory checks, configurable delivery, team collaboration, rental equipment, and business workflow tools. For a contractor, the useful question is whether the available planning and account features support the actual job: finding the right items, coordinating deliveries, and keeping the team’s purchases organized.
Home Depot states on its corporate overview that 90% of the U.S. population lives within 10 miles of its stores. This is the company’s published reach figure; it does not show how close a particular customer is to a store, compare travel times with Lowe’s, or establish local stock.
Tool and truck rentals
Home Depot describes Rental Centers offering tools and equipment used for construction, maintenance, landscaping, and renovation. Its overview also lists truck rental. Lowe’s Pro materials identify Lowe’s Rental as well, but the information available here does not compare local inventory, rental rates, deposits, equipment condition, or rental periods at the two chains.

Express Delivery and other delivery choices
In an August 18, 2026 announcement, Home Depot said Express Delivery had rolled out nationwide across U.S. markets, with thousands of product SKUs and delivery in three hours or less for a small flat fee, without a subscription. The same company release describes same-day and other delivery services. These are company-stated program details, not a promise that every product can reach every address within that window. Check the live order details for the delivery area, eligible items, fee, cutoff, and promised time.
Home services
Home Depot’s company information describes end-to-end home services, including flooring, windows, and kitchen remodels. That category-level description is not a quality comparison with Lowe’s or a guarantee of a particular installer, schedule, or warranty. For a real project, compare the written scope, quote, materials, preparation, timeline, and responsibility for permits or follow-up work.
How to compare the stores for a DIY project
- Write a precise materials list. Record the product, model or specification, quantity, and any compatible accessories. A broad category such as “flooring” is not enough to compare orders accurately.
- Check nearby availability. Use each retailer’s current local listing or contact the store. Verify the quantity available, whether items are in-store or shipped, and whether a substitution changes the product specification.
- Compare the complete cost. Include the full materials basket, delivery or parcel fees, rental charges if applicable, and any installation quote. A loyalty benefit or bulk offer only matters if you qualify and can use it on the purchase.
- Match fulfillment to the project schedule. Compare pickup, curbside pickup, parcel shipment, and delivery for the actual ZIP code and order. For delivery, check the window, cutoff, access requirements, unloading arrangements, and what happens if the order is incomplete.
- Check services before committing. For rental, verify the tool, location, rental term, and transport. For installation, obtain the written scope, timing, exclusions, and warranty details.
- Choose the lower-risk workable option. If a delay would stop the job, favor a confirmed supply and delivery plan over an advertised benefit that has not been verified for the order.
How contractors should compare Pro workflows
For recurring purchases, a Pro feature matters only if it reduces friction or improves control for the business. Compare the workflow using a real upcoming job rather than the program headline.

- Can the buyer build or request a quote for the actual materials list?
- Can the company restrict or authorize purchases for crew members?
- Can orders be separated or tracked by job, client, or location?
- Can repeat purchases be found and reordered without rebuilding the list?
- Can deliveries be scheduled across multiple dates or directly to participating job sites?
- Do the current offer terms apply to the items and purchase volume the company expects?
Lowe’s describes purchase authorization, job/client spend reports, quoting, and multi-delivery scheduling among its Pro tools. Home Depot describes project planning, inventory visibility, delivery preferences, and team collaboration through its Pro Xtra materials. This is a difference in the features each company describes, not proof that one system is easier or more effective. A contractor should verify current access, terms, and fit with the company’s accounting and dispatch routine.

Compare a job, not an advertised discount
Build the same project basket at both stores and compare the final order details: product quantities, fulfillment charges, delivery dates, and any applicable account benefit. A volume-savings claim or reward program cannot establish the cheaper choice until the qualifying terms are applied to the actual order. For jobs with staged deliveries, compare whether each proposed schedule matches the construction sequence and whether suppliers or jobsite access impose extra constraints.

Delivery checklist
- Does the exact product and quantity qualify for the delivery service?
- Is the address in the service area, and does the order meet any cutoff or minimum conditions?
- What fee and delivery window appear for this order?
- Can the vehicle reach the property, and is someone available to receive or unload the materials?
- How are substitutions, shortages, damaged goods, or a missed delivery window handled?
Installation checklist
- What work is included in the written quote, and what preparation or removal is excluded?
- Who performs the work, and what qualifications or local requirements apply?
- What is the expected schedule, including measurement, ordering, and installation?
- Who handles permits, site conditions, and corrections if the work does not match the agreed scope?
- What warranty applies to the product and the installation, and who handles a service call?
Rental checklist
- Is the needed tool or equipment available at the specific location for the required dates?
- What rental duration, deposit, return condition, and late-return terms apply?
- How will the equipment get to the job and back?
- Would repeated rentals make purchase more practical for this business or project?
Which store is better for common situations?
A small repair or weekend project
Start with the exact parts list and local stock. If both stores carry what you need, compare pickup timing and the total cost of the basket. For a single specialized tool, check rental availability and terms before buying solely for one job.
A renovation with installation
Compare the service category and written project quote at both retailers. The fact that both describe installation options does not establish comparable scope or quality. Decide only after checking who will perform the work, what is included, timing, warranties, and any responsibilities for preparation or permits.

A contractor coordinating multiple deliveries
Compare account controls, quote and order tracking, delivery scheduling, and job-level records against the firm’s process. Lowe’s describes multi-delivery scheduling and spend reporting by job or client; Home Depot describes project planning, inventory visibility, configurable delivery, and team collaboration. Confirm the specific functions available to the account and whether the delivery plan works at the jobsite.

An urgent materials run
Check both retailers’ local inventory and actual fulfillment options rather than relying on a chain-wide claim. Home Depot’s August 2026 Express Delivery announcement gives a stated window of three hours or less for eligible orders in U.S. markets, but eligibility and timing are order-specific. A nearby store with the required stock and a workable pickup or delivery slot may be the better choice for an urgent job.
What this comparison can and cannot tell you
The official pages and announcements establish that both retailers describe services for DIY customers and contractors, and they identify specific tools, fulfillment options, and program features. They do not provide a controlled price comparison, a SKU-by-SKU assortment audit, an independent inventory check, a customer-service evaluation, or a national installation-quality study. No reliable nationwide verdict on price, product quality, or service quality follows from the published descriptions alone.
Use the claims as a shortlist of features to investigate, not as a substitute for the order details. The decisive evidence for a project is the local stock, actual basket total, confirmed delivery or pickup plan, and written service terms available for your location and account.
