Doug King’s documented path to wealth runs through commodities: senior trading jobs, a commodity investment fund, and ownership of a physical trading group. He later moved into operating businesses, including oilseed processor Yelo, before investing in Coventry City. Public sources describe those business roles and some company-level figures, but do not establish King’s personal net worth or how much he earned from each venture.
King’s career began in commodity trading
Cargill and Crown Resources
RCMA Group’s leadership biography says King joined Cargill after graduating in 1990 and spent ten years there. He worked in UK grain and non-grain feed ingredients before moving to Geneva to lead petroleum trading. RCMA says he then led Crown Resources’ global petroleum trading business in 2001–2002 and consulted for a large US hedge fund in 2003. These roles document a long, senior career in commodities, but the sources give no salary or personal compensation figures.
Merchant Commodity Fund
King and Mike Coleman established the Merchant Commodity Fund in 2004. In a 2025 Commodity Conversations interview, King said Coleman had funding and asked him to partner. The fund invested in commodity strategies; its assets and reported returns describe the fund, not King’s personal earnings.
From a fund to physical commodity businesses
Why the partners acquired RCMA
King recalled that investor redemptions following the 2008 Madoff affair led him and Coleman to diversify. He said they acquired RCMA Group in 2010, when it was a physical commodity trading business, and expanded its trading in rubber and other commodities across additional countries.

In the same interview, King described RCMA as eventually employing roughly 500 people across 30–35 countries and generating about $10–20 million in annual profitability. Those are his retrospective figures for the group; he did not specify the accounting period or his share of the profit. They should not be read as his income.
What fund and company figures do—and do not—show
| Figure | What it describes | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| 59% net return in 2014, reported in a 2015 MarketWatch article republished by RCMA (report) | The Merchant Commodity Fund’s reported return for that year | King’s personal return or earnings |
| $1.3 billion of redemptions, as King recalled in 2025 (interview) | Investor redemptions from the fund after the Madoff affair | King’s personal loss or fortune |
| About $2 billion at the fund’s peak, reported by Fortune in 2021 citing Bloomberg (coverage) | Fund assets under management around its peak | Assets owned by King personally |
| More than $400 million in investments overseen by RCMA, cited by the BBC in 2023 (report) | Investments overseen by the firm | King’s personal net worth |
These figures measure different things—fund performance, investor withdrawals, fund assets and company activity—and cannot be combined into a personal-wealth estimate.

King later shifted toward operating assets
King said RCMA’s strategy began changing around 2016–17, moving away from commodity wholesaling toward assets, branded products and businesses closer to consumers. One result was Yelo Enterprises, an oilseed-processing venture. ITV previously described King as Yelo’s CEO and reported that the business brought him to the West Midlands. Companies House records him as a Yelo director from 2018, and RCMA’s current leadership page describes him as Yelo’s CEO and chairman. These sources establish roles and the business’s direction, not the value of King’s stake or his return.
Coventry City was an investment, not a disclosed source of his wealth
The BBC reported that King’s takeover of Coventry City was approved in January 2023 and that he bought the remaining 15% stake later that month. In a 2026 Guardian interview, King said: “I’ve earned some money. I’ve decided to deploy it into a project, which is a dangerous thing to do, actually, for your wealth.” His words support the point that he used some money he had earned to invest in the club, but do not identify the source or amount.

The club’s 2023 accounts record £31 million of debts assigned to CovCityCo and exchanged for equity (accounts). That describes the club’s debt and equity structure. It is not evidence that King personally paid £31 million in cash.

The sources cited here do not provide an audited personal balance sheet, a reliable personal net-worth calculation, transaction-level proceeds, or a breakdown of earnings from Cargill, Crown Resources, the Merchant Commodity Fund, RCMA or Yelo. His exact wealth—and the amount he personally made at each stage—therefore remains unknown from the available evidence. The substantiated account is a career in senior commodity trading followed by co-ownership of a fund and a physical trading group, then investment in operating businesses and Coventry City.
