Alan Pace’s public career is in finance and investment: he has been described as a former Wall Street financier and later became managing partner of ALK Capital. But the public record cited here does not reveal his personal net worth, the investments that built it, or how much of his own money he put into Burnley FC. The club’s 2020 takeover involved an investment group and reported borrowing, so its financing figures are not evidence of Pace’s personal fortune.
What is known about Alan Pace’s business background?
The Guardian described Pace as a former Wall Street financier. He later became managing partner of ALK Capital, which says it specializes in acquiring and operating assets in sports, media, entertainment and related technology, drawing on experience in investment, risk management, business operations and turnarounds. That is the firm’s description of its work, not an accounting of Pace’s personal wealth. ALK Capital
Those facts point to a career in finance and investment, but they do not identify particular transactions or returns that made Pace wealthy. No source cited here provides a verified personal net-worth figure or a detailed breakdown of his assets.
How was Burnley’s acquisition structured?
Burnley was acquired through Velocity Sports Partners, ALK Capital’s sports investment arm, rather than in a disclosed personal purchase by Pace alone. On 31 December 2020, the Premier League announced that Velocity had taken a controlling 84% stake in the club and that ALK managing partner Pace had become chairman. The announcement establishes his role and the investment vehicle’s stake; it does not disclose how much personal capital Pace contributed. Premier League takeover announcement

Contemporaneous reporting described a mix of external lending and Burnley cash used for seller payments. The two outlets reported different initial loan figures, and neither figure is a measure of Pace’s personal wealth:
| Source and date | Reported figure | What it refers to |
|---|---|---|
| The Guardian, 2021 | Approximately £60m | MSD UK Holdings loan reportedly used toward initial seller payments, according to people familiar with the deal. The Guardian said Pace declined to confirm the payment financing and ALK did not confirm its own capital contribution. The Guardian’s report |
| The Guardian, 2021 | £30m–£40m | Burnley cash reportedly used for seller payments, according to people familiar with the deal. The Guardian’s report |
| BBC Sport, 2021 | £65m | Initial MSD UK borrowing, according to a source familiar with the contract; the report said further financing was required and borrowing would be repaid through club funds. BBC Sport’s report |
The Guardian’s approximately £60m loan estimate and BBC Sport’s £65m initial borrowing report are not identical. They should be kept attributed to their respective outlets, rather than combined into one exact figure. Both are reports about deal financing, not proof of a personal cash contribution by Pace.

What the public record does—and does not—show
A 2025 Norton Rose Fulbright report identifies Alan Pace, Michael Smith and Stuart Hunt as Burnley’s ultimate beneficial owners and says ALK Capital LLC is wholly owned by those three. It does not give their individual ownership percentages or estimate their personal wealth. Norton Rose Fulbright report
- Established: Pace has a finance and investment background, became an ALK Capital managing partner and is Burnley’s chairman.
- Established: Velocity Sports Partners took a controlling 84% stake in Burnley in 2020.
- Reported, not personally attributed: The takeover financing included a lender loan and Burnley cash, with contemporaneous reports differing on the initial borrowing figure.
- Not established: Pace’s personal net worth, the specific investments behind it, or his exact personal contribution to the acquisition.
The distinction matters because debt raised for a transaction and cash held by a club are not the buyer’s personal money. Burnley’s £42m cash balance and lack of borrowings cited in the Guardian referred to the club’s published accounts for the year ended 30 June 2019; that is historical context, not a current balance sheet.
