David Thomson’s wealth comes from a family media business built over generations—not from a single company or a publicly disclosed personal balance sheet. Forbes estimated his net worth at US$7 billion as of October 4, 2026. That is a dated estimate for David individually, not the value of the entire Thomson family fortune.

How did David Thomson become one of Canada’s richest people?

The roots of Thomson’s wealth lie in a media business his grandfather, Roy Thomson, began building in Ontario. Bloomberg traces an early step to 1931, when Roy bought a radio station in North Bay, followed by his purchase of the Timmins Press newspaper in 1933. Within five years, Roy had become Canada’s leading newspaper owner, according to Bloomberg’s account.

Roy later expanded the business into the United Kingdom and sold shares in a public offering in 1965. His son Kenneth took over the business in 1976. Across those generations, a local radio and newspaper operation grew into a larger media enterprise, and family ownership became a major source of David Thomson’s personal wealth.

What is David Thomson’s net worth?

Forbes’ David Thomson profile displayed an estimated net worth of US$7 billion as of October 4, 2026, along with a real-time global ranking of 579 at that time. Forbes labels the figure real-time, so it can change as markets move. It is an estimate, not an audited statement of Thomson’s personal assets.

The figure should not be read as the combined wealth of the Thomson family. Forbes describes David as one of six billionaire heirs to the media and publishing empire founded by Roy Thomson. Private family holdings and individual wealth estimates are not interchangeable with the market value of a publicly traded company.

How did the Thomson family fortune pass to David?

Bloomberg reports that Roy Thomson’s estate was divided among his three children after his death in 1976. Kenneth inherited 42%, while Audrey and Irma received 33% and 23%, respectively. Bloomberg attributes that breakdown to an unnamed person familiar with the family’s assets, so it is a reported estimate rather than a public ownership ledger.

After Kenneth died in 2006, Bloomberg says his children David, Peter and Taylor each inherited about 14% of the family fortune. These reported shares describe interests in private family holdings; they do not mean each sibling personally owned 14% of Thomson Reuters.

Who owns Thomson Reuters, and what is David Thomson’s role?

David Thomson chairs Thomson Reuters, Woodbridge and The Globe and Mail Inc., according to Thomson Reuters’ official biography. The biography also describes him as an active private investor focused on real estate and a director of several private companies.

Bloomberg reported that Woodbridge, the closely held Canadian family investment company, owned about 70% of Thomson Reuters based on proxy and SEDI filings from March 2026. Forbes lists Thomson Reuters as David Thomson’s source of wealth and says he owns around 14% of the company through Woodbridge. These are distinct measures: Woodbridge’s company stake, David’s reported interest, and Forbes’ estimate of David’s overall personal wealth.

Why net-worth estimates can differ

Any estimate of Thomson’s wealth depends on its date, whether it covers David alone or the wider family, and how it values private Woodbridge holdings alongside public-company stakes. Bloomberg says its index uses market values for public holdings and detailed analysis for individual profiles, while much of the family ownership information remains private. A figure from one source therefore may not match another source’s figure or a later update.
