A “daily gold price” is not one universal number: it may refer to an international benchmark, a live spot quote, or a local market rate. To estimate the gold-content value of a karat-gold item, convert the reference price to the same weight unit, then multiply it by the item’s weight and its gold fraction (karat ÷ 24). That estimates the metal value—not necessarily the jewelry’s retail price or a dealer’s buyback offer.
What does “daily gold price” mean?
Before comparing or calculating a rate, identify what kind of price you are looking at. An international benchmark, a continuously changing market quote, and a local reference rate are different things. The World Gold Council distinguishes these price series and notes that regional reference prices matter in local markets; its data page provides averages across periods and currencies using references including the LBMA and Shanghai Gold Exchange, and says the data are updated weekly. The page displayed data as of 28 September 2026 when accessed.
The LBMA Gold Price is an internationally recognised benchmark for gold delivered in London. ICE Benchmark Administration (IBA) operates and independently administers its electronic auction platform, while LBMA owns the benchmark’s intellectual property. The platform matches buy and sell orders at a single published price. LBMA describes it as electronic, tradeable and auditable, and says it is aligned with the IOSCO Principles for Financial Benchmarks. The LBMA source page reports 15 direct participants; that is not the total number of market actors, and no one participant sets the price alone. See LBMA Gold Price and About the LBMA Gold Price.
How is the LBMA Gold Price tracked?
The benchmark is set twice each London business day, at 10:30 and 15:00 London time. Its auction price is denominated in US dollars per troy ounce for 995-fine gold. Benchmark prices are also made available in several currencies and per gram. LBMA says published auction prices are delayed until midnight London time on the day they are set; real-time prices are available through redistributors or IBA. A benchmark fixing and a live spot quote therefore do not necessarily share the same timestamp or publication status. The sterling and euro prices on LBMA’s daily-auctions page are described as indicative and for settlement only. Check the time, unit and currency shown with any figure on the LBMA precious metal prices page.

How do you calculate a gold karat price?
Karatage expresses gold content in parts out of 24. Divide the karat number by 24 to get the gold fraction: 18K is 18 ÷ 24, or 75% gold. Fineness expresses precious-metal content in parts per thousand. The World Gold Council lists common marks including 375 for 9K, 417 for 10K, 585 for 14K, 750 for 18K and 999 for 24K. Fourteen karat is mathematically 14/24, or 583.33 parts per thousand, although 585 is commonly adopted for 14K jewelry. Hallmark rules, legal minimums and tolerances vary by jurisdiction, so these marks should not be treated as universally regulated standards. See the World Gold Council’s gold jewellery guide.

For example, with an 18K item, multiply its weight by the pure-gold reference price per gram and then by 0.75. This is an arithmetic estimate based on the stated price unit and purity; it is not a guaranteed offer for the item.
If the quote is per troy ounce
Convert the price to a per-gram figure before using the formula. One troy ounce equals 31.1034768 grams, according to the World Gold Council’s jewellery guide. Divide a per-troy-ounce price by 31.1034768 to get the corresponding price per gram, then apply the item’s weight and karat fraction. Keep the quote’s currency unchanged unless you also have an identified exchange rate and timestamp for converting it.

Why can a local gold rate differ from the benchmark?
A local rate may use a different reference series, currency, timestamp, unit or market location. Regional prices can reflect local market dynamics, and currency conversion, taxes, import duties and dealer terms can affect what a buyer or seller sees. The World Gold Council’s 7 May 2018 market primer describes regional reference prices, including those in China and India, as reflecting local market dynamics; it does not establish one universal formula for converting an international benchmark into every local rate. See World Gold Council, “Market primer: Gold”.
Also distinguish the estimated value of the gold from the price of a finished piece. Dealers may apply premiums or discounts based on fineness, form and size; for example, small or exact-weight bars can involve production costs, and fineness above or below the 995 wholesale minimum may affect pricing. Jewelry may involve other costs, while a buyback offer may reflect seller-specific deductions. The sources do not establish a universal formula for workmanship charges, stones, taxes or buyback deductions, so treat those as dependent on the market and seller. See the LBMA market guide.

Write down these details for each figure before deciding whether they match:
- Source: name the benchmark, spot quote or local reference.
- Timestamp and time zone: note when the figure applies, not just the date displayed.
- Currency: identify the currency, and any exchange rate used to convert it.
- Weight unit: distinguish a troy ounce from a gram.
- Market or location: note the country or regional market the rate represents.
- Price type: tell an indicative reference or retail asking price from an executable buy or sell offer.
If those details differ, the figures may both be valid references for different purposes rather than contradictory prices. For historical averages, the World Gold Council’s gold prices data page identifies its reference series and weekly update schedule; someone seeking a live executable quote needs the relevant exchange, dealer or licensed data source.
