Micron bought Toshiba’s Dominion Semiconductor assets in Manassas, Virginia, completing the acquisition on April 22, 2002, for $327.9 million in total consideration. Toshiba was leaving commodity DRAM; Micron wanted more efficient manufacturing capacity. The facility is now Micron’s Manassas fab, where the company announced in May 2026 that it had begun manufacturing 1α DRAM for long-lifecycle DDR4 and LP4 applications.
What Micron bought, and what it paid
Micron and Toshiba announced a memorandum of understanding on December 18, 2001. The transaction covered substantially all of Toshiba’s DRAM-business assets operated through Dominion Semiconductor, including the Manassas land, buildings and DRAM production equipment. Micron completed the purchase on April 22, 2002.
| Deal figure | What it represents |
|---|---|
| $327.9 million | Total consideration recorded in Micron Technology, Inc.’s 2002 SEC filing. It included cash and 1.5 million Micron shares valued at $58.1 million. |
| $363.3 million | Acquired assets recorded in the same filing, including $292.8 million in property, plant and equipment and $7.8 million in intangible assets. |
| $35.4 million | Liabilities Micron assumed, as recorded in the 2002 filing. |
| Approximately 1,000 | People employed at the acquired facility, according to Micron’s 2002 filing. |
The $363.3 million asset figure is not the purchase price: the filing separately records assumed liabilities, while total consideration was $327.9 million.
Why Toshiba exited commodity DRAM
Toshiba described the move as a portfolio change. It planned to end commodity DRAM, phase out production at Yokkaichi and shift FlashVision NAND equipment to Yokkaichi. Its stated focus was NAND flash, high-density NOR flash, FCRAM, customized DRAM and other application-specific, higher-value memory. Toshiba Semiconductor Company president and CEO Takeshi Nakagawa said, “We have decided to withdraw from commodity DRAM business, which means that Micron’s business strategy fits ours.”

Why Micron wanted the Virginia operation
Micron presented the acquisition as a way to reinforce its memory business during a significant industry downturn, manufacture more cost-efficiently and build customer relationships worldwide. CEO Steve Appleton said the Dominion operation should help Micron leverage its manufacturing model and reduce cost per wafer.
The facility also gave Micron an established production site into which it expected to transfer its 0.13-micron process technology by the end of 2002, according to EE Times’ account of the deal. That target was a stated expectation at the time, not a claim about when the transfer was ultimately completed.

What the Manassas fab makes now
In a May 22, 2026 announcement, Micron said it had begun manufacturing 1α DRAM at Manassas and described it as the most advanced memory technology then being produced in the United States. Micron said the memory supports long-lifecycle DDR4 and LP4 products for automotive, defense, aerospace, industrial, networking and medical-device customers.
Micron also announced an expansion investment of more than $2 billion, intended to quadruple DDR4 wafer supply at Manassas. The company said qualified 1α production was expected by the end of calendar 2026. “Begun manufacturing” and “qualified production expected” describe different milestones in Micron’s announcement; the latter was a forecast, not confirmation that qualification had already been completed.

This is a semiconductor fab, not a retail memory-module shop. Its production supports Micron’s long-lifecycle DDR4 and LP4 products; the announcement does not establish that the fab sells finished modules directly to individual buyers.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choosing DDR4 for a personal system
A system buyer looking for DDR4 should match a module to the device, rather than assume that a fab’s production announcement identifies a suitable consumer part. Check the computer or motherboard documentation for the required form factor—typically a desktop DIMM or laptop SO-DIMM—as well as supported capacity, memory speed, voltage and whether ECC is required or supported. DDR4 modules are not interchangeable with DDR5 slots, and a physically fitting module may still exceed the system’s supported configuration.
