The price people actually see can also reflect taxes, import rules, local supply and demand, and market premiums or discounts.
Start with the currency conversion
A useful first comparison is the international gold benchmark converted into the currency used in the local market. If the benchmark is quoted in U.S. dollars, the simplified relationship is:
Local-currency equivalent ≈ dollar gold benchmark × local-currency units per U.S. dollar
Adjust for the benchmark’s weight unit before comparing prices. For example, a benchmark quoted per troy ounce cannot be compared directly with a local quote per gram without converting the units. This calculation is a benchmark comparison, not a universal formula for a retail price.

- ✔️Reverse: The Type 1 reverse, used from 1986-2021, shows a male bald eagle in flight carrying an olive branch to his nest, where a female awaits with her young. The Type 2 reverse, introduced in 2021, shows a bold close-up portrait of an eagle.
- ✔️Each Gold Eagle is a sovereign monetized bullion coin fully guaranteed by the U.S. Mint.
What happens when the currency moves
- Local currency depreciates against the U.S. dollar: more local-currency units are needed to buy one dollar, so the converted gold benchmark rises if the dollar gold price is unchanged.
- Local currency appreciates against the U.S. dollar: fewer local-currency units are needed to buy one dollar, so the converted benchmark falls if the dollar gold price is unchanged.
The “if unchanged” condition matters. Gold’s dollar price and the exchange rate can move at the same time, sometimes in opposite directions. A currency depreciation therefore does not, by itself, predict the exact change in a local gold quote.
Why the price in your country can differ from the converted benchmark
The conversion gives a starting point for comparison. The local market price may sit above or below it because the benchmark and the price available to a buyer are not necessarily the same kind of quote.

- Taxes and import duties: Duties or other taxes can raise the local cost relative to an international benchmark. Tax treatment and trade rules vary by country; do not assume one market’s rules apply elsewhere.
- Import restrictions and availability: Restrictions can affect how much gold reaches a market and the price at which it is available.
- Local supply and demand: Market conditions may push local prices above or below a converted benchmark.
- Processing, transport and product costs: A price for a processed or finished item can include costs that do not appear in a spot benchmark.
- Local premiums or discounts: Some markets trade at a premium or discount to a comparison benchmark. The World Gold Council publishes local premium/discount data for Indian and Chinese consumer markets.
For a coin or other retail product, distinguish the underlying spot value from the seller’s quoted price. A product-specific premium and seller costs can make the price paid differ from the benchmark even when currency conversion is done correctly.
A dated example: India’s domestic price in 2026
In a June 2026 discussion, the World Gold Council reported that domestic gold prices in India were up around 13.2% year to date while international prices were broadly flat. It attributed the difference largely to a 9.0% import-duty increase in mid-May and a 5.3% depreciation of the Indian rupee against the U.S. dollar. These figures describe that market and period; they are not a general rule or forecast.

An import-duty change can affect more than the tax component: by changing supply and demand, it may also alter the local premium or discount. The example shows why a local price can move differently from the international benchmark even when exchange rates are part of the explanation.
How to compare local and international gold prices
- Choose the same timestamp. Gold benchmarks and foreign-exchange rates change over time. Use prices and exchange rates from matching dates and, where possible, matching times.
- Check the exchange-rate direction. If the quote is local-currency units per U.S. dollar, multiply the dollar gold price by that rate. If it is quoted in the inverse direction, convert accordingly.
- Match the unit and purity. Convert the same weight unit, and make sure the prices refer to comparable gold purity.
- Use the same type of benchmark. Compare like with like, such as a spot benchmark against a local spot quote, rather than treating a retail product price as a spot price.
- Separate local adjustments. Account separately for applicable taxes or duties, and identify any local premium or discount instead of attributing the whole difference to currency movements.
The World Gold Council’s India methodology is one example of this approach: it compares the MCX spot price converted through the Reserve Bank of India’s USD/INR rate with the LBMA AM benchmark and import tax. It also identifies exchange rates, local taxes, import restrictions and seasonal factors as relevant. This is an India-specific comparison method, not a formula to apply unchanged in another country or current tax guidance.

Currency exposure also matters between purchase and sale
The exchange rate can affect a buyer’s result over time, not just the local-currency equivalent on the purchase date. In a World Gold Council paper about central-bank purchases of artisanal and small-scale mining gold, the Council discusses discounts from the LBMA price for processing and other costs, and notes that currency appreciation during a holding period can produce a loss for a buyer holding gold before sale. That example concerns central-bank purchasing, not consumer retail pricing, but it illustrates why the exchange rate, costs and sale price all matter across a holding period.
Check current data and local rules
The World Gold Council’s price-data page provides gold spot-price time series in multiple currencies and local premium/discount series for India and China. It reported spot data updated 1 October 2026 and local premium/discount data updated 28 September 2026; these series can change after those dates. The Council’s India methodology dates to 2019, while the LBMA’s China tax overview illustrates that licensing and tax treatment are country-specific. Check the relevant local rules and current data before using a benchmark comparison to estimate a price.
