A crypto liquidation price is an exchange-specific estimate of the price at which a position—or, in some margin modes, the account supporting it—no longer meets the venue’s maintenance-margin requirements. It is not a universal formula or a guaranteed execution price. The result depends on the contract, position size, collateral, margin mode, maintenance-margin tier, fees, and the price reference the exchange uses to trigger liquidation.

To manage the risk, check the contract’s own calculator and rules, monitor the mark price as well as the chart’s last traded price, and keep your position and account exposure within a loss you can tolerate. These steps can help manage risk, but none can guarantee that a position will avoid liquidation.

What a liquidation price means

A leveraged position can remain open only while the equity supporting it meets the exchange’s required maintenance margin. Equity generally reflects the collateral assigned or available to the position, adjusted for unrealized profit or loss and any applicable deductions. Maintenance margin is the minimum required level; it is not the same thing as the initial margin used to open a position.

The liquidation price is an estimate of the market-price level at which the position or account would fail that maintenance requirement under the exchange’s rules. For a linear contract settled in a stablecoin such as USDT, a long typically approaches liquidation as the price falls, while a short typically approaches it as the price rises. How far away the threshold is depends on the contract and the margin supporting the trade.

Leverage affects how much adverse price movement the position can withstand, all else equal: with less margin supporting a given exposure, a smaller move against the position can consume the available loss buffer. But leverage is only one input. A displayed figure cannot be interpreted accurately without knowing the margin mode, contract denomination, position size, maintenance-margin tier, fees, and trigger-price rules.

How exchanges calculate the estimate

There is no single liquidation-price equation that applies to every crypto exchange or contract. A simplified way to understand the calculation is to ask how much loss the position can absorb before its remaining equity reaches the required maintenance margin. The exchange then translates that loss allowance into a price level using the contract’s own profit-and-loss rules.

For an isolated linear position, the inputs commonly include the entry price, position size, allocated initial margin, any extra margin added to the position, the maintenance-margin requirement, and applicable fees. A long’s losses grow as price falls below entry; a short’s grow as price rises above entry. The exchange’s formula determines how those values translate into a liquidation estimate. Do not substitute a formula from another venue or a different contract type.

For example, Bybit publishes a specific formula for isolated USDT contracts that accounts for entry price, initial margin, maintenance margin, position size, and extra margin. OKX publishes separate equations for USDT-margined and crypto-margined futures. Those distinctions matter: a formula or calculator result for one settlement currency or margin arrangement should not be assumed to describe another.

Maintenance-margin tiers can change the result

Some exchanges use risk-limit tiers: the required maintenance-margin rate depends on position exposure, and larger positions can fall into a tier with a higher rate. A larger position may therefore need more maintenance margin and have a liquidation threshold closer to the entry price, even when the trader’s headline leverage setting has not changed.

Fees can also affect the displayed estimate. Bybit notes that its maintenance-margin rate is determined by the position’s risk-limit tier and that closing fees may produce small differences from a hand calculation. OKX likewise identifies position-tier and fee inputs in its liquidation rules. Check whether the venue’s displayed estimate includes relevant closing or liquidation charges rather than assuming a simple price-difference calculation is exact.

A platform example, not a universal rate

Bybit’s published cross-margin illustration uses a 2 BTC long entered at 10,000 USDT, 100x leverage, 2,000 USDT of available balance, and a 0.5% maintenance-margin rate. In that example, 100 USDT is reserved for maintenance margin, leaving 1,900 USDT to absorb losses. Dividing that loss allowance by 2 BTC gives 950 USDT per BTC; subtracting 950 from the 10,000 USDT entry price produces an estimated threshold of 9,050 USDT. Bybit labels the illustration as excluding fees. Its inputs and rate are example assumptions, not a market-wide maintenance rate or a formula to apply to other venues.

Isolated, cross, and portfolio margin are different risk arrangements

Margin mode What supports the position How to interpret the liquidation estimate
Isolated Collateral allocated to the individual position is assessed separately. The position’s estimate is tied to its own collateral and requirements. Bybit says liquidation is triggered when mark price reaches the position’s liquidation price; liquidation of one isolated position does not affect another. Adding margin to the isolated position generally moves its threshold farther away, all else equal.
Cross Available account collateral is shared among positions. Losses in one position can reduce the resources supporting other positions. Bybit describes the displayed cross-margin price as a dynamic worst-case reference; actual risk changes with account equity, unrealized P&L, open positions, maintenance requirements, and available margin. Its cross-margin liquidation trigger is the account maintenance-margin ratio reaching 100%.
Portfolio margin Risk is assessed across the account under the venue’s portfolio-margin rules. Do not treat an individual displayed price as a fixed promise. Bybit says cross and portfolio-margin liquidation occurs when the account maintenance-margin ratio reaches 100%; consult the venue’s current portfolio-margin rules to understand how it assesses the account.

In cross margin, an estimated liquidation price can move even if the position’s entry price and size do not. Another position’s unrealized loss, a change in account equity, or a change in the account’s maintenance requirement can reduce the collateral available to support the trade. Monitor the account-level ratio and collateral, not just one position’s price estimate.

Changing a leverage setting does not necessarily change the displayed liquidation price in the way a trader expects. OKX states that changing leverage alone does not change its estimated liquidation price, although occupied margin and available balance change. The behavior depends on how a venue implements position setup and margin allocation, so verify the result in the relevant contract calculator rather than assuming the setting directly moves the threshold.

Why liquidation can happen before the chart reaches the displayed price

A chart’s default price display often follows the last traded price: the price of the most recent transaction. Liquidation systems may instead use mark price as the trigger reference. Mark price is a separate reference calculated under the exchange’s rules; Binance says its futures mark price combines funding data and spot-market price data. Bybit also says its liquidations use mark price rather than last traded price.

As a result, the mark price can reach the liquidation threshold while the chart’s last-price line still appears to be on the safe side. A stop-loss triggered by last traded price may not activate before the mark price reaches liquidation. If you use a stop, check which price type triggers it and compare that trigger with the exchange’s liquidation reference.

The estimated threshold is not necessarily the price at which a liquidation order will execute. Binance notes that during a fast market, mark price can move through a calculated threshold before the system liquidates the position; the recorded liquidation history can therefore show a different price. Treat the displayed liquidation level as a risk estimate governed by platform mechanics, not a guaranteed fill price.

How to check your liquidation estimate

  1. Open the correct contract’s calculator or trading rules. Select the venue and specific contract you intend to trade. Check whether it is linear or crypto-margined, which asset settles it, and which margin modes are supported. OKX recommends its platform calculator and directs traders to the trading rules for position tiers.
  2. Set the margin mode and direction. Choose isolated, cross, or portfolio margin as applicable, then select long or short. The same entry and size can produce different risk behavior under different margin arrangements.
  3. Enter the position details. Use the intended entry price and position amount, along with leverage and any additional margin fields the calculator requests. Confirm that the amount is expressed in the correct unit—for example, base-asset quantity versus contract count.
  4. Check the risk tier and deductions. Verify the maintenance-margin rate or position tier for the intended exposure and whether the estimate accounts for closing fees or other relevant charges. A tier change or fee assumption can make a manual estimate differ from the platform’s figure.
  5. Read the trigger and account rules beside the result. Determine whether liquidation is keyed to mark price and whether the displayed price is a position threshold or only an account-level reference. In cross or portfolio margin, also inspect the account maintenance-margin ratio and the positions sharing collateral.
  6. Recheck after a material change. Recalculate after changing position size, adding or removing collateral, changing margin mode, or opening or closing other positions. In cross margin, an account’s changing equity and exposure can make an earlier estimate stale.

OKX documents this route to its calculator: on the trading page, open the Menu (three-dot menu) in the top right, choose Calculator, select the margin mode and direction, then enter leverage, entry price, and amount. Interface labels and availability can vary by product or region; use the current interface and rules for the contract you actually hold.

Ways to reduce liquidation risk

Keep position size and account exposure within your loss limit

Before opening a position, consider the loss from an adverse move and whether the collateral supporting it can absorb that loss without putting the account at risk. Larger absolute exposure requires more margin and lower leverage, according to Binance’s risk guidance. Reducing position size or adding margin can lower the margin ratio, but either choice has trade-offs: adding collateral puts more funds at risk, while reducing exposure limits the position’s potential gains as well as losses.

Watch mark price and leave room for a stop

Do not judge liquidation risk from a last-price chart alone. Check the mark price and the exchange’s trigger conventions. A stop-loss close to liquidation can be ineffective if it is keyed to last traded price while the liquidation system responds to mark price. Any stop order also depends on its trigger type and execution conditions; it is not a guarantee against a fast move or a fill at a chosen price.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Manage shared collateral as an account-wide resource

For cross or portfolio margin, keep track of total equity, maintenance-margin ratio, available margin, and all open positions. A position that appears adequately supported in isolation can become more vulnerable when another position loses value or account requirements change. Correlated positions can add to account-wide exposure when markets move together.

Reassess when position tiers or fees change

Check how the exchange’s risk limits apply to your current position size and what fee assumptions are included in its estimate. If exposure crosses a tier boundary, maintenance requirements may change. Revisit the calculator when the position or its supporting collateral changes instead of relying on an earlier screenshot or hand calculation.

What to compare when choosing a contract or venue

Liquidation mechanics are part of a contract’s risk profile. If you are comparing available options, focus on the rules that determine when liquidation begins and what happens next, rather than comparing only the displayed liquidation prices.

  • Margin modes: Find out whether isolated, cross, or portfolio margin is available and what collateral each mode puts at risk.
  • Price reference: Check how mark price is constructed and which price triggers liquidation and any stop orders.
  • Maintenance tiers and position limits: Identify how exposure affects the maintenance-margin rate and whether increasing position size moves it into another tier.
  • Fees: Review closing and liquidation-fee treatment and whether the calculator includes those deductions.
  • Account-level trigger: For shared-margin modes, learn which maintenance-margin ratio triggers intervention and whether a displayed liquidation price is only a dynamic reference.
  • Liquidation process: Check whether the venue describes partial position reductions or other steps before a position is fully closed. Bybit describes tier-dependent partial-close behavior in some risk tiers; venue rules should be checked for the specific contract.

Availability, product rules, and interfaces can differ across regions and change over time. Confirm the current local contract specifications before relying on a calculator result or margin feature.

Limits of risk controls

Smaller positions, additional collateral, stops, and frequent monitoring can reduce or help manage exposure, but they cannot eliminate liquidation risk. Fast price changes can outrun an estimate; fees and maintenance tiers affect the threshold; shared collateral can be depleted by other positions; and a mark-price trigger may not match the last price shown on a chart. Exchange documentation explains how estimates and liquidation processes work, not a guaranteed protective outcome. This article is educational, not individualized financial advice.
