APR is the annualized cost of borrowing, but a credit card may calculate interest each day. Whether you owe interest on purchases depends in part on whether your card offers a grace period and whether you meet its payment conditions. Cash advances usually start accruing interest right away. Your statement and cardholder agreement—not a universal formula—determine how your issuer calculates your charge.
What a credit card APR tells you
A credit card’s annual percentage rate, or APR, expresses a borrowing rate on an annualized basis. It is useful for comparing the stated rates on accounts and on different transaction types, but it does not mean the issuer waits until year-end to calculate interest. Many issuers calculate interest daily using a daily periodic rate and the balance for each day. The card agreement and disclosures explain the rate and balance method used for your account.

A card can have more than one APR. Purchases, balance transfers, and cash advances may each have a different rate, and an introductory or promotional rate may apply to a particular balance for a stated period. Your statement should identify balance categories, the APRs applied to them, and how much of your balance is subject to each rate. The agreement explains which transactions belong in each category. A single headline APR therefore may not describe the cost of every balance on the account.

How issuers calculate interest
A common method is to calculate a daily balance for each rate category, multiply each day’s balance by that category’s daily periodic rate, and add the daily interest amounts for the billing cycle. Some issuers describe this as an average-daily-balance method: they add the daily balances over the cycle and divide by the number of days in that cycle. The exact method and the items included in the balance depend on the issuer’s terms.
From APR to a daily periodic rate
The daily periodic rate is derived from the APR, but the divisor is not universal. Some issuers divide by 360; others use 365. The CFPB’s credit-card contract definitions include an average-daily-balance example using APR divided by 365. That is an example, not a rule that applies to every card. The relevant disclosure or agreement should state the periodic rate or how it is calculated.
Dividing an APR by 12 can be a rough monthly-rate shortcut, but it may not match an issuer’s daily calculation. The number of days in a cycle, the balance on each day, payment timing, and the issuer’s calculation method can all affect the result. Avoid estimating an exact charge from APR alone.
What may count toward the daily balance
Depending on the agreement, the balance calculation may account for new transactions, payments, credits, fees, or previously charged interest. A purchase that posts during a cycle may therefore affect the balance for some days but not others. When several APRs apply, the issuer may calculate interest separately by category before adding the charges to the statement.

For a specific account, compare the interest calculation description in the agreement with the statement’s interest-charge calculation. The CFPB’s consumer explanation of credit card interest, last reviewed January 22, 2024, says many companies calculate interest daily based on the average daily account balance; it does not establish that all issuers use an identical formula.
What a purchase grace period does—and does not do
A purchase grace period is the time between the end of a billing cycle and the payment due date. The CFPB describes it that way in its consumer guidance, last modified September 25, 2024. If your card offers a grace period and you satisfy its payment condition—commonly paying the required purchase balance in full by the due date—you can avoid interest on eligible purchases for that cycle.
Grace periods are conditional, not an automatic interest-free window attached to every card or transaction. Federal law does not require card issuers to offer one. If the account does offer a purchase grace period, the agreement explains which balance must be paid to keep it, such as the statement balance, and which transactions qualify. Do not assume a grace period applies to a cash advance or balance transfer simply because it applies to purchases.

Statement closing date versus due date
The closing date ends a billing cycle and determines which activity appears on that statement. The due date is when the required payment must arrive. When a grace period is offered, it falls between those dates; the closing date is not the payment deadline. Federal rules require procedures to ensure statements are delivered at least 21 days before payment is due. Check the due date on your statement and allow enough time for your payment method to be credited.

What happens if you carry a purchase balance
If you do not pay the required amount in full, interest may apply to the unpaid portion. New purchases may also begin accruing interest from their transaction dates while you are carrying a balance, depending on the account terms. This is why a purchase made after the statement closes can still generate interest before its own statement balance is due if you have lost the grace period.
After carrying a balance, you may need to pay in full for subsequent billing cycles to regain the purchase grace period. The exact reset condition is account-specific. Read the agreement or ask the issuer what amount must be paid and by which due date; making only the minimum payment generally does not meet a full-payment condition.
Why interest may appear after you paid
Paying a statement balance does not always mean every balance on the account was paid, or that no interest had accrued since the statement closed. The statement balance reflects activity through the cycle’s closing date; later transactions and interest that accrues after that date may be accounted for on a later statement. If you previously carried a balance, daily interest can accrue until the payment is received and processed, subject to the issuer’s terms. A later statement may consequently include interest from the days before payoff. This is often called residual or trailing interest.
Review the statement’s interest-charge calculation and transaction dates to see which balance category incurred the charge and for what period. If you believe the charge is wrong, compare the payment date and amount with the account’s grace-period condition and calculation method, then contact the issuer using the number on the statement. Ask which balance generated the charge and what payment would restore the purchase grace period.

Cash advances and other balance categories
Cash advances usually do not receive the purchase grace period. CFPB consumer guidance says interest generally begins on the transaction date for a cash advance or issuer check. The advance may also have its own APR and transaction fee. The agreement defines which transactions count as cash advances, so review it before using a transaction type you are unsure about.
Balance transfers may have a separate APR, promotional period, or transaction fee. Those terms are distinct from purchase terms, even when the transferred balance appears on the same account. Because interest can be calculated separately for different categories, use the statement’s rate breakdown to identify which portion is accruing interest and at what rate.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How payments are allocated across balances
When balances have different APRs, the issuer generally decides how the portion of your payment equal to the minimum payment is allocated. Amounts you pay above the minimum generally go first to the balance with the highest APR. Your agreement explains the allocation rules and how they apply when promotional rates or other balance categories are present.

How to read your statement and agreement
Use the statement to see what happened in the last billing cycle and the agreement to understand the account rules behind it. Look for these details:
- Balance categories and APRs: Identify separate purchase, transfer, and cash-advance balances, their rates, and the amount subject to each rate.
- Grace-period condition: Confirm whether purchases have a grace period and what balance must be paid in full, by what date, to retain it.
- Rate type and duration: Check whether each APR is variable, promotional, or otherwise limited by dates or conditions.
- Interest method: Find the daily periodic rate, any divisor stated, the balance computation method, and which transactions, payments, credits, fees, or interest are included.
- Payment allocation: Learn how the minimum-payment portion and any amount above the minimum are assigned among balances.
- Fees and timing: Check transaction fees, the cycle closing date, the due date, and how the issuer treats payment receipt or posting.
The CFPB’s January 22, 2024 explanation of statements with different APRs notes that the statement shows how much of the balance is subject to each rate, while the card agreement explains the transaction categories. Use both documents if you are trying to explain an unexpected charge.
Ways to reduce interest without guessing
- Pay the required purchase balance in full by the due date when you can. If your account offers a grace period, this is the usual route to avoiding interest on eligible purchases. Verify the exact balance named in your agreement.
- Pay earlier when a balance is accruing interest. Daily interest means an earlier payment can reduce the balance used for subsequent days’ calculations. The benefit depends on when the payment is credited and the issuer’s terms.
- Pay more than the minimum if possible. The minimum-payment portion may be allocated at the issuer’s discretion, but amounts above the minimum generally go to the highest-rate balance first.
- Limit new purchases while carrying a balance. New transactions may accrue interest from their transaction dates after the grace period is lost. Confirm with the issuer what payment is needed to regain it.
- Check each rate category before making a cash advance or transfer. Compare its APR, any fee, and whether interest starts immediately or a promotional term applies.
How to compare two card agreements
When comparing actual accounts, do not compare only the purchase APR. Check the terms below side by side, since they determine both the rate and how a charge is incurred:
