A reliable GST notice response starts by identifying the proceeding and the form—not by sending a generic reply. Capture the notice and its service details, verify the deadline against the notice and applicable law, assign an owner and reviewer, answer each allegation with evidence, file through the relevant GST Portal function, and preserve the exact submission and acknowledgement. If an order follows, treat it as a separate escalation with its own limitation and remedy analysis.
Identify the notice before choosing a response
GST notices do not all follow one response path. The form catalogue maintained by GSTN distinguishes the roles of the principal demand and scrutiny forms:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
| Form | Role described by GSTN | Workflow significance |
|---|---|---|
| FORM GST DRC-01 | Summary of a show-cause notice | A notice summary, not the taxpayer’s reply. |
| FORM GST DRC-06 | Reply to the show-cause notice | The taxpayer’s reply form for that notice process. |
| FORM GST DRC-03 | Taxpayer intimation of voluntary payment or payment against a notice or statement | A payment intimation; do not assume it replaces a required reply. |
| FORM GST DRC-07 | Summary of an order | An order-stage document that should trigger a separate review. |
| FORM GST ASMT-10 | Officer’s notice intimating discrepancies in a return after scrutiny | Signals a scrutiny branch rather than a generic demand reply. |
| FORM GST ASMT-11 | Reply to the notice under section 61 intimating return discrepancies | The taxpayer’s scrutiny response form. |
These descriptions come from GSTN’s March 2020 form catalogue and its GST Common Portal form catalogue. A DRC-01 summary may accompany a fuller show-cause notice; GSTN’s portal functionality note says the summary is required to be served with the notice for the covered classes of proceedings. Read the underlying notice and its cited provision, not just the portal summary.
Build a controlled case record on receipt
Route the notice and enclosures to a restricted case repository as soon as they arrive. Keep an unchanged copy of every original file, including the envelope or electronic service record where available. Record the facts that determine who must act and by when:
#1 Best Overall
- Date and method of service, notice identifier, portal reference and issuing officer or authority.
- GSTIN and legal entity, tax period or periods, and cited statutory provision.
- Allegation, amount or action sought, hearing details, and the response deadline stated in the notice.
- Internal owner, evidence contributors, reviewer, approver, filing user and follow-up date.
A shared register can include all of these fields plus the internal draft date, submission acknowledgement and order or appeal status. This is an auditability control for the company; it is not a universal portal checklist prescribed by GSTN.
Verify the deadline and set internal checkpoints
Use the deadline stated in the actual notice, then check how it applies under the provision and current rules governing that proceeding. The official materials cited here do not establish one reply period for every GST notice. Do not borrow a deadline from a different portal module or from a refund show-cause process.

- Enter the stated due date in the register and retain the notice that supports it.
- Have the tax owner confirm the applicable computation, including any relevant service-date rule, hearing date, extension or adjournment procedure.
- Set an earlier internal draft and review deadline so that evidence gaps and approval issues surface before filing is due.
- If the deadline or procedure is unclear, escalate promptly to the company’s tax or legal adviser rather than waiting for the internal draft date.
Portal procedures and legal requirements can change, and the details may depend on the notice’s legal basis and state or territory. Verify the current rule and the live portal instructions for the case.

Reconcile allegations to records
Turn the notice into allegation-level work items. For each item, keep the department’s assertion separate from the company’s position and identify the supporting records before drafting a conclusion.

- Record the evidence owner, reviewer, unresolved questions and any assumptions that still need verification.
- Mark amounts or facts as accepted, disputed or requiring specialist review, and make the basis for each position traceable to source records.
- Check that totals and period comparisons reconcile across the records cited in the notice and the proposed response.
This evidence matrix is a practical operating control, not a format that the cited GSTN portal guides require. Its purpose is to make the eventual reply complete, supported and reviewable.
Draft, approve and file through the relevant portal path
Prepare the answer for the actual notice type and proceeding. GSTN documents the Services > User Services > Additional Notices & Orders route for relevant notices. Its February 2021 functionality note also describes audit functions for viewing notices and reports, replying and uploading documents, addressing liabilities discrepancy-wise, and applying for an adjournment or extension of the audit date. The available actions vary with the case, so follow the notice instructions and confirm the live portal screen. See GSTN’s February 2021 portal functionality update.
Before filing, have a second person review the response against the notice and source records. Confirm the notice reference, tax period, factual statements, arithmetic, legal references, attachments and signatory authority; ensure the portal entries match the signed submission.

Use a different branch for scrutiny and audit
Scrutiny and audit should not be forced into a show-cause template. In scrutiny, ASMT-10 identifies return discrepancies and ASMT-11 is the corresponding taxpayer reply form. Respond to each discrepancy with the reconciliation and records that resolve it, while checking the notice’s own due date.
For audit, GSTN’s functionality description includes notice and report access, document uploads, discrepancy-wise responses, and requests for an adjournment or audit-date extension. Use those functions only as applicable to the live case and follow the actual notice’s instructions. The available sources do not establish a single deadline for all scrutiny or audit notices.

Escalate an order as a new matter
If a DRC-07 or another order arrives, open a separate order-stage review: preserve the communication date, calendar the applicable limitation period, and assess payment, rectification or appeal options under current law. A payment intimation such as DRC-03 should not be treated as a substitute for a required response unless the governing law and case facts support that approach.
The GST Portal FAQ for the demand-order appeal filed in FORM GST APL-01 describes an appeal period of three months from communication of the decision or order, with possible condonation of up to one further month for sufficient cause. For the appeal process it describes, the FAQ also states a minimum pre-deposit of 10% of disputed tax and says DSC is mandatory for companies and LLPs. These are FAQ statements about that order-appeal process, not notice-reply deadlines; verify their applicability against the actual order and current law. See the GST Portal appeal FAQ.
