How CIP-113 Token Controls Could Affect Cardano DeFi Swaps, Lending, and Liquidity

CIP-113 proposes transfer rules for Cardano tokens, but compatible swaps, LP positions, and lending flows require extra validation and protocol support.

Cardano’s proposed CIP-113 programmable tokens could enforce transfer rules such as recipient approvals, but they would not move through DeFi exactly like ordinary native tokens. Swaps, liquidity positions, and collateral flows would need compatible transaction construction and token-specific validation. That may help issuers meet control requirements, but it adds complexity and makes the token’s substandard and issuer authority important to users and protocols.

What changes when a Cardano token has transfer controls?

Ordinary Cardano native tokens are identified by a policy ID and asset name. Their basic transfers use ordinary ledger transactions; they do not execute a token contract each time they move. A minting policy governs creating or burning tokens, but it does not automatically impose rules on later transfers. Cardano’s native-token overview explains this distinction.

CIP-113 proposes a different model: a programmable token moves from a shared script address, and its transfer is validated according to the token’s selected substandard. In the proposed deterministic smart-wallet arrangement, ownership is associated with the user’s stake credential. The standard uses existing Cardano primitives and does not call for a hard fork. The exact rules depend on the token’s substandard and deployment. CIP-0113 and the Cardano Developer Portal’s programmable-token guide describe the model.

Question Ordinary native token CIP-113 programmable token
What validates a basic transfer? An ordinary ledger transaction; no token-specific script runs for the transfer. Cardano Developer Portal Transfer validation through the standard’s script and the token’s selected substandard. CIP-0113
Can issuer rules govern later transfers? The minting policy controls minting and burning, not subsequent transfers. Cardano Developer Portal Depending on configuration, rules can include recipient restrictions and other defined behavior. CIP-0113
What extra flow does DeFi need? Ordinary native-token transaction handling. Script validation and additional transaction components; requirements vary by action and substandard. Cardano Developer Portal and CIP-0113

For an issuer, transfer rules can support controls such as allowlists or restrictions. They do not by themselves establish that a token satisfies a particular law or regulatory obligation: that depends on the asset, jurisdiction, and implementation. Cardano’s tokenized-assets page discusses the compliance context.

How would a programmable-token DEX swap work?

A DEX cannot assume a programmable token can simply move between arbitrary addresses under the ordinary-token flow. CIP-113 specifies that a swap transaction include a withdrawal for the transfer-logic script and a registry-node reference input. A batcher can include the required reference inputs and batch multiple programmable-token transfers in one transaction. Those are transaction-construction requirements, not evidence that every DEX currently handles them.

The proposal’s statement that “Programmable tokens are compatible with existing DeFi infrastructure” appears in its DeFi integration discussion, alongside these concrete requirements for swaps, lending, and transaction construction. Read it as a description of the intended integration model, not a guarantee that a given venue has implemented it. CIP-0113

Before swapping, check whether the DEX supports the token’s substandard and constructs the required transaction components. The token’s own rules also matter: if it only permits approved recipients, the destination involved in a swap must pass validation.

What do transfer controls mean for liquidity providers?

Providing liquidity adds another destination and another return path to consider. CIP-113 states that LP tokens involving programmable tokens must be sent to the user’s smart-wallet address. A user therefore needs a wallet flow that can receive and manage that position under the relevant token model; compatibility with ordinary assets alone is not enough to establish this.

Pool participation can also depend on the token’s rules. For example, where a token requires approved recipients, the pool or smart wallet receiving tokens—and the address receiving them when they are returned—must satisfy the applicable validation. Check those conditions along with the DEX’s implementation before committing assets. CIP-113 names Minswap as an integration target, but that reference does not establish current production support. Minswap’s December 22, 2025 white paper describes its service as a non-custodial Cardano DEX using AMM smart contracts and liquidity pools; it is not evidence of CIP-113 support.

Can programmable tokens be used as lending collateral?

CIP-113 describes a lending protocol receiving programmable-token collateral at a smart-wallet address it controls. Deposits and withdrawals must satisfy transfer validation, and liquidation transactions must provide the required registry proofs. The lender must therefore support the token’s particular rules through the full collateral lifecycle, not just accept a deposit.

Substandard choice can affect collateral rights. Depending on the scripts and configuration, authorized third parties may be able to freeze, seize, or force transfers without the holder’s explicit permission. A lender should assess whether such actions could change or remove collateral and review the token’s recorded upgrade authority and live protocol parameters. Users should likewise understand who can act on the token and whether its code or configuration can change. The actual rights depend on deployment; the label “programmable” alone does not answer those questions. CIP-0113

What is live, and what should users verify?

The Cardano Developer Portal page updated September 22, 2026 describes CIP-113 as still in draft/final review while calling its reference implementation production-ready; Cardano’s tokenized-assets page also characterizes the proposal as under review. The CIP includes a Preview bootstrap deployment. These status descriptions do not establish production support on mainnet by any particular wallet, DEX, or lending protocol. Programmable transfers require script execution and additional transaction construction, so they add complexity and can add fees. The cited documentation does not provide a general current numeric fee comparison for swaps, liquidity provision, or lending, so the extra cost cannot be responsibly stated as a fixed amount.
