A retreat in corn and soybean meal prices can give a feed buyer a chance to cover known needs, but it does not prove prices have bottomed. That was the central message of Bryan Doherty’s June 21, 2024, Successful Farming commentary: consider securing some feed needs when prices look favorable, while recognizing that no one can reliably identify the low in advance. Its prices and crop-weather context describe 2024, not today’s market.
What the June 2024 article reported
Doherty described a price pullback ahead of the 2024 summer growing-season weather risk. In the article, December corn futures had recently peaked above $4.96 before falling about 30 cents over the weeks before publication. Soybean meal futures had declined more than $40 per ton, or 10.5%, from an early-May peak. These are historical figures reported in the June 21, 2024 article, not current quotes or buying targets. Read the article.
The timing mattered because the size of the 2024 crops was still uncertain. Doherty pointed to early crop ratings and planting conditions, and to the importance of timely rainfall. Those were observations about that growing season; they do not establish current crop conditions or forecast current prices.
The pullback therefore presented a possible opportunity, not proof of a market bottom. Doherty wrote, “Waiting for a ‘low’ can turn out to be costly.” A buyer who waits for prices to fall further may benefit if they do, but may instead face higher costs if the market turns upward.

How a feed buyer can think about the decision
Start with the operation’s actual feed needs rather than a prediction about where futures will go. The relevant questions include how much feed will be needed, when and where it must be delivered, how much price increase the operation could absorb, and whether cash flow can support a hedge. A price that seems attractive in isolation may not suit a buyer whose delivery schedule, local cash price, or budget differs.
- Identify the quantity and delivery periods you can reasonably forecast.
- Compare the offered price with your operation’s costs and budget, not just with a recent market high.
- Decide how much price risk you can tolerate and whether you can meet the cash-flow demands of the strategy.
- Consider covering a portion of known needs rather than treating one decision as an all-or-nothing bet on the market.
- Monitor market and weather developments, and discuss the plan with an adviser familiar with your feed needs and local market.
Doherty’s general principle was to consider value in relation to production costs, without claiming that a buyer could predict the bottom. His 2024 article said buying at low prices before adverse weather events was common sense; it did not establish that the June 2024 prices were the low.

Three ways to manage feed-price exposure
Physical contracts and futures or options address price exposure differently. The following descriptions are educational, not individualized financial advice. The right fit depends on physical needs, geography, delivery timing, cash-flow tolerance, and the ability to manage a hedge.
| Approach | What it does | Important considerations |
|---|---|---|
| Forward contract with a supplier | Can set a price and volume for physical feed to be delivered later. A related January 2024 article suggested considering multiple months of needs. See the January 2024 discussion. | Check delivery timing and location, volume flexibility, payment terms, storage and basis, and what happens if your needs change after you commit. |
| Buy futures | Creates futures-price exposure and an exit choice, but does not by itself lock in the local cash price. Physical feed still has to be purchased. The related January 2024 article notes that futures require margin. | Account for margin and cash-flow demands, contract month and size, local basis risk, and how the futures position will be closed in relation to physical purchases. |
| Buy call options | Gives the buyer the right, but not the obligation, to own futures. A May 2025 discussion characterizes the premium as a cost for protection against higher futures prices. See the May 2025 discussion. | Consider the premium and fees, strike price, expiry, coverage period, and whether the cost fits the operation’s tolerance for price increases. |
None of these approaches guarantees savings or profit. Futures and options involve significant risk of loss and may not be suitable for everyone; a plan or trading discipline cannot guarantee success. Understand the possible consequences as well as the potential benefit, and consult a qualified adviser before using financial contracts.

What the article can—and cannot—tell buyers now
The June 2024 commentary is useful as a framework for thinking about timing risk: a price decline may offer a chance to cover some known requirements, but waiting for a perfect low can backfire. Its reported corn and soybean meal prices, crop ratings, planting conditions, and weather discussion are historical. They cannot establish today’s market level or justify a present-day recommendation.
Doherty’s October 18, 2024 article later addressed buyers who felt they had missed an earlier chance to secure needs, but that was also a dated market view rather than current guidance. Read the October 2024 article. For a current decision, use current local cash offers and market information, confirm delivery terms, and seek advice based on the operation’s circumstances.
