Ccilu has used recycled silicon waste associated with TSMC and other semiconductor suppliers in a massage-pod insole—not, according to available reporting, as the shoe’s entire sole or upper. The material reached the footwear maker through Semisils Applied Materials, described as its waste-treatment partner. And “cheap” is misleading: prices reported in November 2023 were not bargain prices, and they are historical rather than current.
How does semiconductor waste end up in a shoe?
In a November 2023 Taipei Times report based on CNA reporting, Ccilu CEO Wilson Hsu said Semisils Applied Materials proposed exploring footwear uses for recycled silicon waste from TSMC and other semiconductor suppliers. Ccilu and Semisils worked on the idea for several years before the first pressure-relief slippers appeared.

The reported relationship is partner-mediated: Semisils treats the waste and Ccilu makes footwear. The account does not say that TSMC manufactures or sells shoes, nor does it establish a direct consumer-shoe business between TSMC and Ccilu.

Where is the recycled material used?
The clearest product description is a massage-pod insole. HotHardware’s November 2023 report describes Ccilu’s Stepping Stones flip-flops and slip-ons as using recycled silicon waste in that insole feature. Taipei Times also reports pressure-relief slippers and later sports shoes and massage slippers.

These descriptions do not establish that a shoe is made wholly from semiconductor waste. Neither source gives the recycled feedstock’s share in a particular model, the full material formulation, or the processing and molding details. HotHardware uses both “silicon” and “silicone” in its coverage; the cited reporting does not provide a technical specification that resolves the terminology, so the more consistently reported term here is “silicon waste.” Silicon and silicone should not be treated as interchangeable material names.
Are these shoes actually cheap?
Not on the evidence available. Taipei Times reported that in November 2023 the pressure-relief slippers cost NT$1,880–NT$2,080 (US$59.44–US$65.76), and quoted Hsu describing the products as “not at all cheap.” HotHardware reported then-current US-store prices of $41.40 for Stepping Stones flip-flops and $70 for women’s slip-ons.

These are dated reported prices, not a current price check. What environmental benefit has Ccilu claimed?
Hsu told Taipei Times/CNA that one pair “can cut the consumption of crude oil by 0.5 liters, and lower carbon emissions by 1kg.” The report attributes both figures to the CEO but gives no calculation method, study, system boundary, or independent verification. Treat them as Ccilu’s reported claims, not established lifecycle savings or a basis for comparing these shoes with other footwear.

How does the footwear fit into Ccilu’s wider material experiments?
The 2023 Taipei Times account says Ccilu had previously made shoes using coffee grounds and recycled PET bottles, including rain boots reportedly made from 15 recycled bottles. It also mentions co-branded Wonder Woman and Batman shoes with Warner Bros Studio and a PGA Tour partnership for golf shoes made from ocean waste. These examples show reported experimentation with materials and collaborations; they do not establish that each initiative remains available or is currently operating at commercial scale.
In a DBS interview, Hsu described work involving coffee grounds, ocean plastics, semiconductor waste, and agricultural materials. He said a Taiwan pyrolysis trial was receiving used shoes and converting them into energy, while a closed-loop footwear model was under development. The interview said four upcycling technologies had been commercialized and described pyrolysis as a trial and closed-loop products as planned. Those are Hsu’s statements in the context of that interview, not an independent audit of current operations.
