Yes. For U.S. federal income-tax purposes, capital gains can raise the income used to determine whether part of your Social Security benefits is taxable. The IRS adds half of your net benefits to other income—including taxable capital gain distributions—and tax-exempt interest, then compares the total with a threshold based on your filing status. A gain does not make the same amount of benefits taxable, and the 85% figure is a possible share of benefits included in taxable income, not an 85% tax rate.
The figures below apply to tax year 2025 federal returns. State tax treatment is outside this explanation and may differ.

Why a capital gain can affect Social Security taxes
The IRS uses a measure commonly called combined income to determine whether Social Security benefits are taxable. It includes half of net Social Security benefits, other taxable income, and tax-exempt interest. The IRS explicitly includes capital gain distributions among other taxable income in its worksheet. Its plain-language explanation also lists capital gains as other income that can affect benefit taxation (IRS Publication 915 (2025); IRS reminder on taxable Social Security benefits).
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThat means a realized gain or taxable capital gain distribution may push your combined income above the threshold for your filing status. If you are already above it, additional income can also affect how much of your benefits is taxable. The result depends on the full calculation, not just the size of the gain.

The key point is that the capital gain does not change the amount of Social Security you received. It changes the income figures considered alongside your benefits. The IRS then uses those figures, your filing status, and the applicable worksheet to calculate what portion of benefits, if any, is included in taxable income. As combined income rises, the taxable portion generally rises too, but it is not a one-for-one calculation.
What the calculation counts
- One-half of your net Social Security benefits.
- Other taxable income, such as wages, pensions, interest, ordinary dividends, and capital gain distributions.
- Tax-exempt interest.
The IRS worksheet’s instruction for other taxable income specifically names “capital gain distributions.” This is not a separate capital-gains tax threshold: gains enter the broader income calculation used for Social Security benefits. The list is not limited to investment income; wages, pensions, interest, and ordinary dividends can also contribute. Tax-exempt interest is included in this calculation even though it is tax-exempt.
What it does not mean
- It does not mean every dollar of capital gain makes one dollar of Social Security benefits taxable.
- It does not mean the capital gain is taxed at the same percentage as the taxable share of your benefits.
- It does not mean you pay an 85% tax rate. The 85% figure is the maximum share of benefits that may be included in taxable income under the stated conditions.
These distinctions matter because the base amount and the higher levels discussed below are part of a benefit-taxability calculation. They are not deductions from capital gains, an exemption for investment sales, or the tax rate on your gain. Your capital gain and the taxable portion of your benefits are distinct amounts determined under the relevant tax rules.
2025 combined-income thresholds by filing status
For 2025, compare your combined income with the applicable base amount below. At or below the base amount, none of your benefits are taxable under this calculation. Above it, some benefits may be taxable; use the IRS worksheet to determine the amount.
| 2025 filing situation | Base amount |
|---|---|
| Single, head of household, or qualifying surviving spouse | $25,000 |
| Married filing separately; lived apart from spouse for all of 2025 | $25,000 |
| Married filing jointly | $32,000 |
| Married filing separately; lived with spouse at any time during 2025 | $0 |
These base amounts are the starting thresholds in the benefit-taxability calculation. They are not capital-gains exclusions, deductions, or special capital-gains rates. Married filing separately requires particular care: the applicable amount depends on whether you lived with your spouse at any time during the year. For that filing status, the distinction is between living apart for all of 2025 and living together at any time during the year.
The base amount is useful as a first check, not as the final answer. If the combined-income figure is at or below it, the calculation does not make benefits taxable. If it is above the base, that tells you to complete the applicable worksheet; it does not, by itself, tell you how many dollars of benefits are taxable. A capital gain can matter if it moves the combined amount across the relevant base, but the worksheet is still needed to determine the result.

When up to 85% of benefits may be taxable
The IRS says generally up to 50% of benefits may be taxable. Under specified conditions, the taxable share can rise to as much as 85%:
- For most individual filing statuses, when combined income exceeds $34,000.
- For married filing jointly, when combined income exceeds $44,000.
- The higher limit also applies to married filing separately when the filer lived with their spouse at any time during the year.
These higher figures are not additional capital-gains thresholds and do not determine your tax rate. They describe when as much as 85% of benefits may be included in taxable income. Your actual taxable benefit amount is determined using the applicable IRS worksheet, which considers your benefits and income together.
In other words, “up to 85% taxable” means that as much as 85% of the benefit amount may be included when figuring taxable income. It does not mean 85% of your benefits are automatically taxable once you cross the relevant combined-income level, and it does not mean the IRS applies an 85% rate to your income. The share that applies depends on the full calculation. The $25,000 and $32,000 base amounts answer the initial threshold question; the $34,000 and $44,000 figures relate to when the higher maximum share may apply.
How to estimate whether a gain could change your result
Start with the IRS combined-income calculation rather than treating the capital gain by itself as the answer. For example, if your income before a gain is close to your filing-status base amount, adding a taxable gain may move your total above that amount. That can make a portion of your benefits taxable. A higher total may make a larger portion taxable, subject to the worksheet and applicable limits.
This is a way to identify whether the gain could matter, not a way to calculate the final taxable benefit. The IRS says the taxable portion generally increases as benefits plus other income rise, but a personal result depends on the complete return calculation. Joint filers combine both spouses’ income and benefits even if only one spouse received Social Security.
To make a useful preliminary check, assemble all three components rather than looking only at investment proceeds: half of net benefits, other taxable income (including capital gain distributions), and tax-exempt interest. Compare their total with the base amount for your filing status. A gain may have no effect on whether the total is over the base if the total remains below it, but if it changes the combined-income figure, it may affect the worksheet result. Do not assume that the amount of a gain equals the amount of newly taxable benefits.

There is no single answer to “How much Social Security becomes taxable if I have capital gains?” based on the gain alone. The relevant variables include the tax year, filing status, net benefits, the gain and other income, and tax-exempt interest. If you file jointly, the calculation uses both spouses’ income and benefits together—even when only one spouse received benefits—so a gain or other income reported for either spouse can be relevant to the joint calculation.
Calculate and report benefits on a 2025 return
- Confirm the tax year and filing status. The thresholds above are for tax year 2025. Choose the correct status, including the married-filing-separately rule based on whether you lived with your spouse during the year. If you are unsure which status applies, check current IRS instructions or consult a qualified tax professional rather than choosing a threshold by guesswork.
- Find your net benefits. Use the net benefit amount in box 5 of Form SSA-1099, or the corresponding Railroad Retirement Board statement. Use net benefits, not an estimate based on monthly payments.
- Assemble the income figures. Add half of net benefits to other taxable income, including capital gain distributions, and tax-exempt interest. The IRS examples of other taxable income include wages, pensions, interest, and ordinary dividends as well as capital gain distributions.
- Compare with the correct base amount. If the combined amount is at or below the applicable base, none of the benefits are taxable under this calculation. If it is above the base, continue to the IRS worksheet.
- Use the worksheet to calculate the taxable share. Do not estimate the final amount from the base threshold alone. Use Publication 915 (2025) or the current Form 1040 instructions for the relevant tax year. If the worksheet directs you through a special situation, follow that treatment rather than relying on a quick combined-income check.
- Report benefits on the return. For 2025, report net benefits on Form 1040 or Form 1040-SR, line 6a, and the taxable portion on line 6b. If benefits are not taxable but you otherwise must file, the IRS directs you to report net benefits on line 6a and enter zero on line 6b.
The IRS publication listing identifies Publication 915 (2025) as published on November 19, 2025 (IRS forms and publications listing). For later tax years, check that year’s publication and current Form 1040 instructions rather than assuming the 2025 thresholds or line references remain unchanged. Publication 915 is the primary resource for the calculation and worksheet; the relevant instructions should match the year of the return you are filing.
Cases that need closer attention
The general calculation may not be enough for every return. The IRS cautions readers to use the applicable worksheet for special circumstances. If you received lump-sum benefits, have exclusions that affect the calculation, are uncertain about filing status, or cannot determine which worksheet applies, consult the relevant IRS instructions or a qualified tax professional. A threshold comparison is a useful first screen, not a substitute for resolving unusual circumstances under the instructions.
