They can support credit and structured-product analysis, derivatives work, and some valuation or M&A analysis. That overlap is useful, but actuarial training alone does not establish the deal, market or client skills required for transaction execution or client coverage.
Where actuarial skills fit in banking
Actuarial work and banking analysis both involve making decisions under uncertainty, often across time. The strongest transfer is where a bank needs to estimate potential losses, test scenarios, assess balance-sheet risk or value financial instruments. The International Actuarial Association (IAA) describes these applications in its banking guide; the Canadian Institute of Actuaries (CIA) also lists banking applications in its resource on actuaries working in banking.
Credit risk and expected credit losses
Credit analysis is one of the clearest conceptual bridges. The IAA compares probability of default (PD) with claim frequency, and loss given default (LGD) with claim severity. Assessing a borrower has parallels with underwriting, while estimating provisions for expected credit losses has parallels with reserving for insurance claims.
These are useful analogies, not equivalences: loans and insurance contracts have different product features, customer behaviour and regulatory treatment. In banking, actuarial modelling experience can help estimate credit-risk parameters used in credit-loss allowances and risk-weighted assets, as the CIA notes. The work may involve building or reviewing models, evaluating assumptions, and explaining how estimates affect lending or capital decisions.

Risk models, stress testing and capital
Quantitative modelling and scenario analysis can apply to several kinds of bank risk, including credit, market, operational and fraud risk. Stress testing asks how a bank or portfolio might perform under adverse conditions; capital assessment considers whether resources are adequate for the risks taken. The IAA identifies capital modelling and enterprise stress testing among relevant applications, while the CIA points to capital management.
Actuaries can contribute by developing scenarios, estimating losses under them, checking model behaviour and communicating uncertainty. Banking-specific definitions, data and regulatory requirements still need to be learned; familiarity with insurance models does not automatically make a model suitable for a bank.

Treasury, liquidity and balance-sheet management
Asset-liability management (ALM) experience can help with questions about how assets and liabilities behave together. The IAA says bank asset-liability committee work has similarities to life-insurance ALM, but highlights bank-specific concerns such as liquidity, funding and customer behaviour. The CIA also names treasury liquidity and interest-rate risk as banking applications.
In practice, this area may involve analysing interest-rate exposure, funding needs or the effects of changing assumptions on the balance sheet. An actuary moving into treasury should be prepared to work with banking products and funding dynamics rather than assume that insurance ALM methods transfer unchanged.

Derivatives and investment analysis
Investment knowledge can support valuation and risk analysis for financial instruments. The Institute and Faculty of Actuaries (IFoA) curriculum covers investment evaluation, portfolio risk management, derivative uses and markets, valuation methods, and portfolio risks. The Actuaries Institute also lists derivatives pricing, structured-securities analysis, investment analysis, portfolio optimisation and scenario modelling among relevant competencies.
These skills may be useful in analysing a derivative’s value or risk, assessing a portfolio, or examining structured securities. A candidate should be able to explain the instrument, valuation approach, assumptions and main sources of risk—not just demonstrate mathematical technique.

Valuation, M&A and the boundary with deal execution
Actuarial modelling can contribute to business valuation and merger analysis. The Actuaries Institute identifies valuation and M&A analysis as relevant applications, making them adjacent to investment-banking work.
That does not show that actuaries commonly originate deals, manage client relationships, negotiate transactions or execute them. Those responsibilities are distinct from analytical support, and the available professional-body materials do not establish how frequently actuaries fill transaction-team roles. Anyone targeting those jobs should build deal-specific experience and commercial skills in addition to quantitative expertise.

Choosing a banking path: compare the work, not just the title
“Investment banking” can cover different activities, and the sources describe applications rather than a head-to-head comparison of career outcomes. Use the work and deliverables to judge fit:
| Path | Typical analytical focus | What to investigate about the role |
|---|---|---|
| Risk modelling and control | Credit, market, operational or fraud risk; stress scenarios; model assessment | How much time goes to model building versus validation, governance and explaining risk decisions |
| Treasury and balance-sheet management | Liquidity, funding, interest-rate exposure and ALM | How customer behaviour, funding conditions and regulation shape day-to-day analysis |
| Derivatives or structured-product analysis | Pricing, valuation, portfolio risk and scenario analysis | Which products are covered and how much the work involves valuation, market judgement or client interaction |
| Valuation or M&A analysis | Business valuation and merger analysis | Whether the position is analytical support or includes client coverage, negotiation and transaction execution |
The functions in this table are supported by the IAA, CIA and Actuaries Institute materials; the sources do not establish relative hiring rates or career outcomes for these routes.
What to learn before making the move
To make actuarial experience legible to banking employers, connect it to financial products and decisions, not only to modelling methods. The IFoA curriculum describes investment and derivatives subjects, including advanced investment practice in financial institutions. The IAA also points to banking-product knowledge and business and regulatory awareness.
- Markets and products: Understand the instruments and banking products relevant to the roles you are pursuing.
- Investment evaluation and valuation: Be ready to explain how an investment or business is assessed and what assumptions drive the result.
- Derivatives and credit terminology: Learn product-specific concepts such as PD and LGD, and how they inform bank decisions.
- Banking regulation: Understand the regulatory context for the function, particularly where models affect credit-loss allowances, capital or liquidity.
- Communication and commercial judgement: Present model assumptions, limitations and implications clearly to colleagues who need to make business decisions.
Professional-body sources establish plausible skill applications and relevant areas of study, but do not quantify demand, salaries, hiring rates or the share of investment-banking roles held by actuaries. Treat the transition as a role-specific fit to demonstrate, not a guaranteed career outcome.
