Whether a business credit card charges interest, offers a grace period, or applies your payment to a particular balance depends on the card’s agreement and disclosures. Consumer-card protections under Regulation Z are useful context, but they do not automatically set the terms of a business-purpose account. Before relying on interest-free time or a particular payment allocation, check the terms for your own card.
What determines how a business card handles interest?
Start with the card’s purpose and its agreement. The CFPB’s official interpretation of Regulation Z says a business-purpose credit card is generally exempt from the regulation’s consumer-credit provisions, apart from specified rules concerning card issuance and liability for unauthorized use. That remains the case even if the card is occasionally used for consumer purchases. In the other direction, a consumer-purpose card does not become exempt just because its owner sometimes uses it for business purchases.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
This distinction matters because rules that apply to covered consumer credit card accounts should not be treated as guaranteed terms for a business-purpose account. For a business card, the agreement and disclosures are the place to find the purchase APR, how the balance is calculated, which transaction types are eligible for any grace period, what you must pay by the due date, and how payments are allocated.
The CFPB interpretation cited here is its comment for Regulation Z § 1026.3, “Exempt Transactions.” Because interpretations can be updated, consult the current official interpretation if you need to establish the rule for a particular legal or compliance question. The practical point for a cardholder is simpler: do not assume a consumer-card rule controls your business account without checking the account terms.

How interest and a grace period work
A grace period is a period in which eligible credit can be repaid without incurring a periodic-rate finance charge. It is not a promise that every card, every purchase, or every type of transaction will be interest-free for a set number of days. For covered consumer credit card accounts, Regulation Z does not require an issuer to offer a grace period. If an issuer does offer one, it must disclose whether it exists and the conditions for using it.
For a business-purpose card, the agreement determines whether purchases receive a grace period and what the cardholder must do to qualify. It also provides the applicable interest terms. The CFPB rules described for consumer accounts do not establish one universal grace-period length, nor do they make all transaction types eligible. Do not substitute a familiar consumer-card practice for the business card’s written terms.
Does a business card have a grace period?
It may, but the information available here does not establish a universal answer for business cards. Check the agreement’s purchase terms and disclosures. Look for an explicit statement about whether purchases have a grace period, which purchases qualify, and the conditions you must meet by the due date. If the documents do not make those conditions clear, ask the issuer to identify the applicable provision before relying on an interest-free period.

Do you have to pay the full balance to avoid interest?
There is no single answer for every business-purpose card. Whether paying the full balance avoids interest depends on the account’s grace-period terms, eligible transaction types, and payment conditions. If a grace period applies only when specified conditions are met, paying less than the amount required by those terms may mean that the expected interest-free treatment does not apply. The agreement—not a general rule about business cards—must answer what amount is due and what payment qualifies.
Also distinguish a grace period from a temporary promotional or deferred-interest offer. They are different types of terms; do not assume that a promotion provides the same eligibility rules as a purchase grace period. Read the provision for the particular balance or transaction and note its conditions and dates.
How to check your card’s interest terms
Use the current card agreement and disclosures for the account you actually use. A comparison based only on a headline APR can miss the terms that determine when interest applies and how payments affect balances.

- Find the current agreement and disclosures. Use the documents provided for your account, rather than assuming another card or an older offer has identical terms.
- Identify the purchase APR and whether it can change. Note the rate that applies to purchases and the agreement’s explanation of any changes. Do not treat a purchase rate as the rate for every transaction category.
- Locate the grace-period language. Record whether a grace period is offered, which transactions qualify, and exactly what must be paid—and by when—to meet the stated conditions.
- Check the balance-calculation method. Find the explanation of how the issuer calculates the balance on which interest is assessed. Do not infer a method from a different issuer’s terms.
- Separate transaction types. Review the treatment of purchases, cash advances, balance transfers, and promotional or deferred-interest balances where those categories appear in the agreement. One category’s terms do not establish another’s.
- Read the payment-allocation section. Check how the issuer applies the required minimum and any amount paid above it, especially if the account can have balances at different rates.
- Confirm the due date and required payment conditions. Use the agreement and current account disclosures to determine the deadline and payment amount relevant to any grace-period eligibility.
Keep the answers together rather than relying on a single rate figure. A useful personal summary is: purchase APR and change terms; grace-period eligibility and required payment; balance-calculation method; and minimum- and excess-payment allocation. Add separate terms for other transaction categories if your account has them.
How payments are allocated
For covered consumer credit card accounts, Regulation Z governs how the issuer allocates amounts paid above the required minimum periodic payment. In general, that excess goes first to the balance with the highest APR. A special rule applies to deferred-interest balances: during the last two billing cycles of the promotional period, the rule includes allocation to that balance. This rule does not determine how the issuer assigns the required minimum payment.
Those consumer-account rules are context, not a promise about a business-purpose card. For a business account, consult its agreement for both parts of the payment: the required minimum and any amount above the minimum. This is particularly important when the account carries balances with different rates or has a promotional balance, because the way a payment is assigned can affect which balance remains.

What to look for when balances have different rates
Find out whether the agreement explains allocation separately for minimum payments and excess payments. Then check how it treats each balance category present on your account. Do not assume that paying more than the minimum will reduce the balance with the highest rate first unless the terms applicable to your account say so. Likewise, do not assume a general allocation rule tells you how the minimum portion is assigned.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why consumer-card rules are only a reference point
Regulation Z provides useful context when learning how credit-card grace periods and payment allocation can work, but its consumer-account rules have a defined scope. The CFPB’s interpretation of the business-purpose exemption says a business-purpose card generally falls outside most of those provisions, with specified exceptions for card issuance and unauthorized-use liability. Occasional consumer use does not, by itself, change the status of a business-purpose card under that interpretation; occasional business use does not, by itself, exempt a consumer-purpose card.

That boundary is why a comparison of business cards should be based on verified terms from each card’s agreement, not assumptions carried over from a personal card. Compare the purchase APR and how it may change, grace-period eligibility, the method used to calculate balances, and the rules for minimum and above-minimum payments. Check separate treatment for cash advances, balance transfers, or promotional balances if they are relevant to the offer.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Assuming every business card has a grace period. The consumer rule does not require one, and a business card’s terms must be checked directly.
- Assuming every transaction qualifies. A grace period may have eligibility conditions and may not cover every transaction category.
- Assuming the consumer payment-allocation rule applies. The highest-APR rule described above covers amounts paid above the minimum on covered consumer accounts; it does not set the minimum-payment allocation and should not be promised for business-purpose accounts.
- Relying on occasional card use to change the account’s category. Under the CFPB interpretation, occasional consumer use does not bring a business-purpose account under the full consumer-credit regulation, and occasional business use does not remove a consumer-purpose account from it.
- Comparing cards on APR alone. The APR does not answer whether purchases have a grace period, how balances are calculated, or how payment is divided among balances.
- Confusing a promotion with a grace period. Check the terms for the specific promotional or deferred-interest balance instead of assuming the purchase grace-period conditions apply.
A practical way to compare business-card terms
When reviewing two or more offers, put like terms side by side and mark any term that is not stated in the documents you have. Do not fill gaps with a typical rate, assumed grace-period length, or another card’s rules. A comparison is only useful if it reflects the particular account terms and any stated conditions.
| Term to compare | What to verify in the agreement |
|---|---|
| Purchase APR | The purchase rate and how it can change. |
| Grace period | Whether purchases receive one, which purchases qualify, and the conditions for avoiding a periodic-rate finance charge. |
| Balance calculation | The method used to calculate the balance on which interest is assessed. |
| Minimum payment allocation | How the issuer applies the required minimum payment. |
| Payment above the minimum | How excess payment is assigned, particularly across balances with different APRs. |
| Other transaction balances | Separate terms for cash advances, balance transfers, and promotional or deferred-interest balances, if applicable. |
If you cannot locate a term or its conditions, treat it as unconfirmed rather than assuming the more favorable interpretation. Ask the issuer to point you to the controlling account language. For a decision about an actual bill, use the current agreement and disclosures for that account.
What the available rules do—and do not—establish
The CFPB materials establish a scope distinction and describe specific rules for covered consumer accounts: grace periods are optional, and amounts paid above the minimum generally go first to the highest-APR balance, subject to the stated deferred-interest provision. They do not establish a particular business card’s APR, grace-period length, balance-calculation method, payment allocation, or transaction-specific treatment.
Those business-card terms are account-specific. No issuer agreement or card offer is addressed here, so no particular rate, payment deadline, or grace-period condition can be supplied for an individual card. The agreement is the necessary source for those details.
