How Brazil Is Competing With U.S. Corn and Soybean Exports

Brazil’s expanding corn and soybean supply has made it a stronger rival to U.S. exporters, particularly in China. The competition is not just about how much each country grows: buyers also weigh delivered prices, currency, shipping routes, delivery reliability, and trade relationships. A July 2024 Successful Farming article said Brazil had exported more corn than the United States in the prior marketing year for the first time; that is a period-specific claim, not a current crop-year ranking.

How much has Brazil’s crop trade grown?

Successful Farming reported in July 2024, citing USDA Foreign Agricultural Service data, that Brazil’s corn and soybean production had nearly tripled over 20 years. The article attributed export growth of more than 1,000% for corn and 400% for soybeans to the same source. It did not specify the exact start and end marketing years in the retrieved text, so these figures describe the article’s long-run comparison rather than a current annual forecast. Read the July 2024 article.

The article also said Brazil exported more corn than the United States in the prior marketing year for the first time. Because that statement refers to the marketing year before the article’s publication, it should not be treated as a ranking for 2026 or any later crop year. A current comparison requires matching crop, marketing year, and export measure in updated commodity data.

Why are Brazil’s exports competing with U.S. crops?

More supply and a larger trading network

Greater production gives Brazil more grain to sell abroad, while investment in financing, commercialization, and transport helped build the trade network that moves it to buyers. Iowa State economist Guilherme DePaula told Successful Farming that investments by ADM, Bunge, and Cargill helped develop Brazil’s soybean and corn trade, much of it oriented toward China. The article does not quantify how much each company’s investment contributed; this is DePaula’s explanation of the sector’s development, not a measured causal estimate.

Price, currency, and the cost of delivery

Buyers compare the cost of grain delivered to their destination, not simply farm-level prices. Columbia Grain International commodity trading manager Joe Foley said that Brazilian production, higher U.S. prices, and a strong U.S. dollar had made competition especially difficult in recent years. Currency movements can change the relative cost of U.S. supplies for overseas buyers, while freight and timing affect the final offer.

Transport conditions can shift the balance, too. The 2024 article described low water on the Mississippi River as slowing U.S. shipments and raising their cost, while road improvements in Brazil were helping address a historic infrastructure weakness. Those were conditions reported at the time, not a statement about current river levels or Brazilian road capacity.

China’s sourcing decisions

The article described Brazil as China’s largest soybean supplier and, at that time, its largest corn supplier. It also discussed U.S.-China tensions and supplier reliability as influences on sourcing. Those relationships can affect which suppliers buyers turn to, but they do not determine orders on their own: the article characterized China as pragmatic and price-sensitive. Rabo AgriFinance strategist Steve Nicholson put the price factor plainly: “If we have the cheapest beans, they’re going to come to us,” he said. “They’re very price-sensitive.”

What does the competition mean for U.S. farmers?

More Brazilian supply gives global buyers another major source of corn and soybeans, which can make it harder for U.S. sellers to win orders when their delivered offer is less competitive. The pressure is most direct in export markets where the two countries serve the same customers. It does not mean that every Brazilian shipment displaces a U.S. sale: demand, crop availability, delivery timing, price, and trade relationships all affect sourcing.

DePaula’s account also cautions against treating Brazil’s growth as a story of effortless gains. The 2024 article said Brazilian growers faced familiar pressures—prices, costs, financing, rainfall, and competition—and reported that Mato Grosso growers faced prices below production cost and had less grain-storage capacity than U.S. farmers. These are observations in that article, not verified descriptions of current conditions throughout Brazil.

How can U.S. exporters respond?

The article’s experts emphasized building demand and reaching a broader set of buyers rather than relying on one export destination. They discussed possible opportunities in the European Union and niche markets for non-GMO or low-carbon crops. These were suggestions made in 2024, not evidence that a particular market is currently open, profitable, or suitable for a given farm or exporter.

That strategy matters because competing for existing demand has limits. DePaula warned that competition can become unprofitable without additional demand. For farmers and businesses evaluating an export opportunity, the relevant test is whether the expected sale price covers production, financing, storage, and delivery costs—not whether a new market sounds promising in principle.

How to read the newer U.S.-Brazil trade figures

Recent bilateral trade and tariff figures provide context about U.S.-Brazil commerce, but they do not measure which country is winning global corn or soybean sales. In 2025, U.S. goods and services trade with Brazil totaled an estimated $135.7 billion, and the U.S. recorded surpluses of $14.4 billion in goods and $27.4 billion in services, according to the Office of the United States Trade Representative. These broad totals are not agricultural export figures. USTR’s Brazil country page.

Brazil’s Ministry of Development, Industry, Trade and Services reported that Brazilian exports to the United States were $40.4 billion in 2024 and $37.7 billion in 2025. Its July 2026 update said first-half 2026 exports were $17.4 billion, down 13% from the same period a year earlier. The ministry also estimated, using 2024 bilateral trade as its baseline, that 23.1% of Brazilian exports to the U.S. were subject to the Section 301 surcharges described in that update; 52.7% were outside those surcharges and Section 232 tariffs. Those measures concern bilateral trade exposure, not crop-export rankings. Brazil’s MDIC July 2026 update.

USTR’s June 1, 2026 determination described a Section 301 investigation into Brazilian policies involving digital trade and electronic payments, preferential tariffs, anti-corruption enforcement, intellectual property, ethanol market access, and illegal deforestation. This is a separate policy issue from the production and logistics factors behind competition in global crop markets. Tariff scope and effective dates can change; product-specific decisions require checking operative U.S. tariff schedules and current Federal Register notices. USTR’s June 1, 2026 determination.

What matters when comparing U.S. and Brazilian suppliers?

A useful comparison is crop- and destination-specific. For a particular sale, assess:

  • Crop and marketing year: Compare the same commodity and period; an earlier export ranking is not a current one.
  • Delivered price: Include the product price, currency effects, freight, and costs associated with getting grain to the buyer.
  • Volume and route: Consider available export supply and the relevant river, road, port, or other transport constraints.
  • Buyer and destination: A supplier’s position in one market does not establish its position everywhere.
  • Reliability and timing: Buyers weigh whether a supplier can deliver the required volume when it is needed.
  • Trade rules: Verify the measures and exclusions that apply to the specific product and shipment date.

The July 2024 article supports these factors as qualitative drivers; it does not provide a complete, current numerical comparison of U.S. and Brazilian export prices, volumes, or market shares.
