What changed in China’s game industry in 2024?
China’s domestic game-market actual sales revenue reached RMB 325.783 billion in 2024, up 7.53% from 2023 and a record, according to the China Audio-video and Digital Publishing Association. The reported game-user base also set a record at 674 million, a 0.94% year-over-year increase. The figures measure the industry as a whole; they are not sales or player counts for Black Myth: Wukong.

The year’s results included growth in several segments. Mobile remained the largest, while console-game revenue grew particularly quickly. The association’s report says the console segment’s expansion was mainly driven by phenomenon-level new releases, but it does not isolate this game’s share.

These are separate market measures reported by the association. Mobile accounted for 73.12% of market actual sales revenue, client games for 20.87%, web games for 1.42%, and the report’s other-game category for 4.59%. E-sports game actual sales revenue was RMB 142.945 billion, up 7.52%; it is a separate reported category, not an additional platform share in the breakdown above.

How did Black Myth: Wukong contribute?
The game’s clearest documented contribution was visibility and recognition. Black Myth: Wukong won Best Action Game and Players’ Voice at the 2024 game awards. People’s Daily described the awards as further evidence of China’s growing international influence in games.
That recognition came alongside a year in which the official industry report recorded strong growth and pointed to phenomenon-level new releases as a major reason for console-market expansion. The available figures do not give the game’s sales, revenue contribution, share of console growth, or a quantified effect on the overall market. It is therefore accurate to describe the title as part of the year’s momentum and a prominent example of Chinese games’ international reach—not as the sole cause of the industry’s records.

Why the record cannot be credited to one game
In its summary of the annual report, China’s National Press and Publication Administration (NPPA) listed several factors behind the domestic market’s and user base’s records: new games and hit products, steady performance from long-running games, strong mini-games, and greater convenience through multi-platform releases and cloud gaming. That explanation places a major hit within a broader mix of activity.
Chinese-developed games also generated RMB 260.736 billion in domestic actual sales revenue in 2024, up 1.70% year over year, and US$18.557 billion in actual sales revenue in overseas markets, up 13.39%. The overseas figure covers Chinese-developed games across the industry; it is not a sales figure for Black Myth: Wukong. For overseas revenue from Chinese-developed mobile games specifically, the United States accounted for 31.06%, Japan 17.32%, and South Korea 8.89%.

What the first-half figures do—and do not—show
The NPPA’s January–June 2024 summary reported domestic game-market actual sales revenue of RMB 147.267 billion, up 2.08% year over year, and 674 million users, up 0.88%. The full-year report later showed 7.53% revenue growth and 0.94% user growth. These figures compare different periods: the first covers six months, the second the full year. They do not establish that Black Myth: Wukong caused a second-half acceleration.
The annual totals support a substantial conclusion without overstating the evidence: China’s game market reached records in 2024, and the year included a globally recognized Chinese hit during rapid growth in console revenue. The industry’s broader results also reflect other games, platforms, and business models.
