Bitcoin miners can use power-rich sites and existing electrical infrastructure as a starting point for AI and high-performance computing (HPC), but an energized mining facility is not automatically an AI-ready data center. The transition can involve new construction, extensive refurbishment, changes to cooling and electrical systems, and a different customer and revenue model. In company filings, “repurposing” ranges from allocating power among workloads to converting a site for data-center use; announced capacity and targets do not, on their own, establish commissioned, billable or profitable AI capacity.
Can Bitcoin mining sites be used for AI data centers?
Yes, some mining operators are developing AI and HPC businesses around sites, power access and operational experience originally used for Bitcoin mining. The reusable assets can include land, grid access, power-supply arrangements, buildings, utility infrastructure and the ability to manage large electrical loads. Which of those assets can be reused—and how much further investment a site needs—depends on its particular condition, power economics, location and intended customer.

The word “repurpose” can obscure very different projects. It may mean allocating a portion of a site’s power to a new workload, adapting an existing building, or constructing or substantially converting a high-density data center. Core Scientific says it is constructing, refurbishing, reallocating or converting facilities for AI-related workloads. Bitdeer describes AI/HPC hosting and an evaluation of a modular-data-center collaboration. Those company disclosures illustrate the range of activity; they do not establish that every mining facility needs the same retrofit or that any particular design is suitable for all sites.

What carries over—and what does not
A site’s electrical access and land may be valuable foundations, but power is not the same thing as computing capacity. An AI/HPC operator must also deliver a facility and operating arrangement suited to the workload it has contracted to support. The cited filings do not establish universal engineering thresholds for rack density, cooling-water use, power-usage effectiveness or conversion cost, so those values should not be inferred from a company’s power-capacity figures.

The computing equipment is another important distinction. Bitcoin mining ASICs are not interchangeable with AI accelerators. Core Scientific’s filing discusses retaining or maximizing the value of mining equipment separately from converting facilities for colocation. A conversion plan therefore should not be read as a plan to turn mining machines into AI servers.
Why are Bitcoin miners moving into AI?
The strategic appeal is the possibility of using site and power assets for workloads beyond Bitcoin mining. A miner may develop a data-center service for an AI/HPC customer, allocate some power to that service while mining elsewhere, or work with a partner to develop selected sites. These are ways to pursue a different use of infrastructure; none guarantees customer demand, successful commissioning or better returns.
MARA describes its portfolio as an energy and digital-infrastructure platform where workloads can be allocated according to economics and grid conditions. Its 2025 Form 10-K says: “We use Bitcoin mining as a flexible, energy-responsive workload to monetize excess and underutilized power and to optimize power management across our portfolio.” That is the company’s characterization of its approach, not a universal description of how every miner operates or proof that a given site can profitably serve both workloads.
Core Scientific describes a transition toward colocation services while continuing profitable mining during conversion work. It says it intends to repurpose remaining facilities used in digital-asset mining “as circumstances allow” and in a manner designed to preserve access to power, maximize value of mining equipment to third parties and meet existing obligations to suppliers and customers. The qualification matters: the company presents a staged intention, not a claim that all its sites have already changed use.

What does it take to convert a mining facility to AI?
It takes an infrastructure and business-model change, not a software update. A mining site that has access to electricity may still need building work, electrical upgrades, cooling changes, new operating processes and a customer contract before it can support a data-center service. The appropriate scope is site-specific; the company filings cited here do not support a single standard retrofit recipe or conversion timetable.
1. Confirm the site and power position
Start by identifying what the operator actually controls or has contracted: land, grid access, power-supply arrangements, buildings and utility equipment. Then distinguish the amount of power available to the site from what can be allocated to IT equipment, made billable to a customer or delivered by a completed facility. Those are different stages and may be reported using different measures.
CleanSpark identifies electricity cost, cooling and location among factors relevant to mining operations. Those considerations remain material when evaluating an alternative data-center use, although their effect will depend on the proposed design and commercial terms. A favorable power position alone does not settle whether a particular site is appropriate for an AI/HPC customer.

Determine whether the project entails a new building, refurbishment, equipment reallocation or a more extensive conversion. High-density computing changes the facility requirements; an operator needs to establish that the proposed electrical and cooling design can support the contracted workload. Core Scientific reports a mix of construction, refurbishment, reallocation and conversion activity. Bitdeer has described evaluating modular data-center collaboration with Submer, but an evaluation is not evidence of a confirmed deployment or of a universal equipment choice.

3. Secure a customer and define delivery
In a colocation arrangement, the site operator adapts and supplies facility capacity while an AI/HPC customer brings or contracts for the computing workload. The contract and project plan should make clear what capacity is being delivered, when it is expected to be available, what the customer provides and what remains the operator’s responsibility. Core Scientific reports contractual arrangements with CoreWeave and describes its business transition toward colocation services. The existence of an arrangement does not make every planned megawatt commissioned or billable.
4. Plan the transition around operating obligations
A conversion can happen in phases, with mining continuing at some sites while work proceeds elsewhere. That approach may preserve mining operations during development, but it also means a portfolio’s announced AI direction should not be mistaken for a completed conversion. Core Scientific cites supplier and customer obligations in describing how it intends to repurpose facilities. Bitdeer states that it intends to continue mining while acknowledging that AI/HPC initiatives may draw power capacity and capital away from mining.
5. Evaluate investment and execution risks
Bitdeer’s annual report identifies significant upfront investment, operational complexity and additional risks associated with AI/HPC expansion. That makes the business case dependent not just on access to power but on development execution, customer commitments and the cost of adapting the facility. The cited disclosures do not provide a universal conversion cost or a general payback period, so neither should be assumed for an individual site.

| Model | How it works | What the filings establish |
|---|---|---|
| High-density colocation | The operator converts or builds facility capacity for a third-party AI/HPC customer. | Core Scientific describes colocation services and contractual arrangements with CoreWeave. Its 2025 Form 10-Q/A recorded an expectation to deliver 250 MW of billable capacity by the end of 2025. That was a company expectation in the filing, not verified completion. |
| Flexible or dual workload | The operator keeps mining at some sites or allocates power among mining and AI/HPC as conditions and economics allow. | MARA describes mining as an energy-responsive workload and a platform intended to support multiple workloads. The commercial case still depends on site economics and customer demand. |
| Site-specific conversion | A selected mining site transitions toward exclusive data-center use. | CleanSpark reported a plan to transition power at its Sandersville site and expected to decommission mining there during fiscal 2028. This is a plan, not a completed transition. |
| Partnered development | A miner contributes selected power-rich sites while a partner develops, finances, builds or operates infrastructure. | MARA describes a joint venture with Starwood for selected sites. The filing describes an announced structure and plans, not completed construction or operating capacity. |
When comparing these models, focus on five questions: who controls the site and power assets; who funds construction and upgrades; whether a customer is committed and for how long; what facility work and delivery timeline are required; and whether mining continues during development. The filings do not establish that one approach is preferable in every case.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to read company capacity figures
Capacity figures can refer to different things. Gross power, contracted power, billable power load, IT load and commissioned AI capacity are not interchangeable. A figure may describe a site or portfolio’s power position without showing how much AI computing is installed, accepted by a customer or generating revenue. Always retain the company’s own metric and the date attached to it.
| Company-reported figure | What it refers to | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Approximately 895 MW billable power load; 1,370 MW gross power | Core Scientific, as of September 30, 2025 | Reported in its 2025 Form 10-Q/A, filed March 2, 2026. Neither measure should be labeled commissioned AI capacity. |
| 250 MW of billable capacity expected by the end of 2025 | Core Scientific company expectation | Recorded in its 2025 Form 10-Q/A, filed March 2, 2026. The cited filing’s target does not verify whether delivery subsequently occurred. |
| Approximately 1.9 GW total capacity across 18 data centers | MARA portfolio capacity | Company-reported in its 2025 Form 10-K, filed March 2, 2026. This is not the amount converted to AI. |
| Approximately 620 MW of its Georgia platform | Bitdeer platform figure | Described in its 2025 Annual Report, filed February 17, 2026. It is not all AI-ready or converted capacity. |
The dates and definitions are part of each figure, not optional footnotes. For example, a portfolio-wide power figure cannot answer how much AI capacity is commissioned at one site. As of October 13, 2026, the cited Core Scientific filing’s end-of-2025 expectation should still be described as the expectation recorded in that filing unless a later source verifies its outcome.
What could this mean for a miner’s business—and what could go wrong?
For a miner, this is a decision about allocating capital, power and sites among different uses. A colocation strategy can create a service business tied to a customer’s facility requirements; a flexible strategy may preserve mining at some locations; a full site transition may end mining at the selected facility. These routes expose a company to different customer, construction and operating dependencies. The filings cited here do not establish that AI/HPC activity is inherently more profitable than mining.

- Comfortable Non-Slip Grip:The ergonomic pen barrel has a soft rubberized coating for a comfortable, non-slip grip, so you won't get fatigued even after long hours of writing.
- Capacity may be overstated if definitions are blurred. A company’s gross or portfolio power figure is not a measure of live AI computing capacity.
- Plans can be mistaken for delivery. Targets, announced partnerships and statements of intent are not proof of completed construction, commissioning, billable operations or profitability.
- Conversion requires capital and execution. Bitdeer specifically identifies upfront investment and operating complexity as risks of AI/HPC expansion.
- Workloads compete for resources. Bitdeer says AI/HPC initiatives may reallocate power capacity and capital investment, even as it intends to continue Bitcoin mining.
- Site economics vary. Power cost, cooling and location affect a site’s suitability; assets that are valuable for mining do not necessarily make the site suitable for every data-center customer.
CleanSpark’s Sandersville disclosure illustrates why plans should be tied to a location and date: in its Form 10-Q for the quarter ended June 30, 2026, filed August 6, 2026, the company said it expected to transition the site’s power capacity to data-center use and decommission mining there during fiscal 2028. That is a stated future plan, not evidence that the transition is complete.
What the announcements do—and do not—show
Company filings establish that several miners are pursuing AI/HPC-related strategies, but they do not by themselves prove the commercial outcome. A credible assessment separates each stage: site and power access, construction or conversion, equipment and facility readiness, customer delivery, billable operation and financial performance. Evidence for an earlier stage should not be presented as proof of a later one.
For example, MARA’s reported approximately 1.9 GW across 18 data centers describes its total portfolio capacity, not AI conversion. Bitdeer’s approximately 620 MW Georgia platform figure does not mean that amount is AI-ready. Core Scientific’s reported billable power load and gross power measures are distinct from commissioned AI capacity. Likewise, the announced MARA-Starwood joint venture and Bitdeer’s evaluation of a modular collaboration indicate development approaches, not completed operating facilities.
