Tom Wagner’s documented path to wealth is through investment management: he previously worked at Goldman Sachs, then co-founded investment firm Knighthead Capital Management in 2008. Knighthead’s later acquisition of Birmingham City made him a high-profile football owner, but the available sources do not establish Wagner’s personal net worth or how much he personally earned from the firm.
How did Tom Wagner make his money?
Wagner’s known career began in investment banking at Goldman Sachs. In 2008, he and Ara Cohen co-founded Knighthead Capital Management LLC, an investment firm. Birmingham City’s 2023 announcement identifies Wagner’s Goldman Sachs employment and Knighthead co-founder role, but does not detail his compensation or personal investment returns. Birmingham City’s announcement, July 2023
Knighthead describes its strategy as event-driven and focused on deep-value investing, particularly in businesses that need financial or operational restructuring. Its stated activities include credit analysis, sourcing, trading and restructuring. This is the firm’s description of its approach, not a public accounting of Wagner’s own investment performance. Knighthead’s 2024 announcement
What is Knighthead’s role—and what does its AUM mean?
Knighthead reported approximately $9.5 billion in assets under management in its 2023 announcement. Assets under management (AUM) refers to assets managed by the firm for its investment activities; it is not the personal fortune of its co-founder. The figure is a dated firm-level measure, not a statement of Wagner’s net worth. Birmingham City’s announcement, July 2023

How did Wagner become Birmingham City’s owner?
Wagner’s connection to the club came through Shelby Companies Limited, a Knighthead affiliate. In May 2023, the proposed transaction was reported as a 45.64% stake in Birmingham City’s holding company, along with the stadium. The deal was completed in July. At completion, BBC Sport reported that Shelby held 45.98% of Birmingham City Limited and full ownership of St Andrew’s. BBC Sport, May 8, 2023 · BBC Sport, July 13, 2023
The ownership position later changed. In November 2025, BBC Sport reported that Shelby controlled 96.64% of Birmingham City Limited, which owned 100% of the club and women’s team. Those percentages describe company ownership, not Wagner’s personal share of the assets or the amount he personally invested. BBC Sport, November 7, 2025

Does Birmingham City or the Sports Quarter establish his net worth?
No. The club transaction and the proposed Sports Quarter development show the scale of Knighthead’s activity in Birmingham, but neither discloses Wagner’s personal wealth. Knighthead said in 2024 that the planned mixed-use Sports Quarter was expected to generate more than 3,000 local jobs once operational; that is a company projection, not a realized result or a measure of Wagner’s fortune. Knighthead’s 2024 announcement
Wagner has described the project as an opportunity to transform the fan experience and contribute to Birmingham’s growth. In a 2025 BBC interview, he called the proposed development “an entertainment venue unlike many others in the world.” These are his views about a plan, not confirmation of its eventual scope or financial outcome. What is known—and unknown—about Tom Wagner’s fortune?
The public information supports a career-based explanation: Goldman Sachs experience, followed by co-founding Knighthead and later involvement in Birmingham City through a Knighthead affiliate. It does not establish a reliable personal net-worth figure. The cited sources also do not disclose Wagner’s exact ownership percentage in Knighthead, compensation, distributions, carried interest or realized investment gains. Knighthead’s AUM, Birmingham City’s ownership structure and development projections should not be treated as personal wealth figures.
