You can rent an NFT for temporary use without buying the token, but a rental standard alone does not guarantee access in a particular game or app. Before paying, confirm that the exact NFT and application support the rental mechanism, what the renter is allowed to do, when access ends, and how payment and any deposit are handled.
How does renting an NFT work?
An NFT can represent a unique item or another asset defined by an application. Renting separates permission to use that asset from ownership of its token. The owner keeps the NFT; a renter receives a temporary usage right only if the token’s implementation and the relevant game, marketplace, or service recognize it.
Two Ethereum standards illustrate different ways to represent that arrangement. Neither creates a universal rental marketplace or guarantees that an application will honor the permission.
ERC-4907: a temporary user role for ERC-721
ERC-4907 extends ERC-721 by adding a user role and an expiry time. Its abstract says the role grants permission to use the NFT, but not the ability to transfer it or appoint users. The owner can change the assigned user and expiry. Once the expiry passes, the user role is no longer valid without a separate revocation transaction.

That means an expiry field should not be treated as a promise of irrevocable access for the full term. Check the rental agreement and the specific contract implementation for rules about changes before expiration.
ERC-5006: user records for ERC-1155
ERC-5006 proposes user records for ERC-1155 assets. A record includes a token ID, owner, user, amount, and expiry, allowing the permission to cover a quantity rather than framing it only around one token. A collection and application still need to implement and recognize this approach before it has practical value to a renter.

What do NFT rental standards not provide?
Standards describe ways to represent permissions; they do not settle the business terms. Rent pricing, deposits, fees, payment processing, disputes, user experience, and compatibility require separate decisions by the platform or contract.
ERC-2615 outlines a rental flow involving approvals, a listing, assignment of usage rights, rent payment, and agreement completion or revocation. It explicitly says that token or value transfer is outside its scope. In other words, the proposal does not itself supply a universal payment system or guarantee how money is handled.

How a platform’s rental rules can differ
Decentraland’s official LAND rental documentation describes one platform-specific approach: an owner sets a daily rental price in MANA and chooses the number of days. If the price, rental period, or expiration date changes, the LAND owner must send a transaction. Decentraland says this prevents an old listing signature from being used directly against the contract at a lower price or for an unintended duration.
Those currency, listing, and transaction rules apply to Decentraland’s documented system. They should not be assumed to apply to another collection, marketplace, or rental contract.

What to check before accepting an NFT rental
- Confirm compatibility. Verify that the exact token, rental mechanism, and game or virtual world recognize one another. The existence of ERC-4907 or ERC-5006 does not show that a particular asset or application supports it. Ethereum’s ERC-721 overview and the relevant token documentation can help explain the standard, but the application’s own rules determine whether the item works there.
- Read the permitted actions. Establish what the renter can do with the asset and what remains exclusive to the owner. A user role is not ownership and does not inherently include the ability to transfer or resell the NFT.
- Check the term and early-change rules. Find the exact expiry time and whether the owner or contract can change the assigned user or term before then. Do not infer an unchangeable guarantee from an expiry date alone.
- Calculate the full cost. Check rent, platform charges, network transaction costs, and any deposit. Find out who receives or holds each payment, when a deposit is returned, and what conditions affect it. The standards do not establish common payment or deposit protections.
- Understand execution and listing changes. Identify the contract and transactions that activate the rental. If listing terms can be signed or changed, understand what invalidates an old listing and whether the owner must submit a transaction, as in Decentraland’s documented process.
- Ask what happens if the app does not recognize the rental. A token’s on-chain status does not guarantee the expected in-game experience. Ethereum’s gaming overview explains that game data and logic may be on-chain or off-chain; off-chain servers or application rules can therefore affect what a renter can actually use.
What risks and limitations should renters understand?
- Compatibility is not automatic. A standard can encode a user permission, but the specific collection and application must support and honor it.
- Access and ownership are different. Renting does not make the renter the token owner or automatically grant transfer, resale, or modification rights.
- Access may depend on more than a smart contract. Wallets, marketplaces, contracts, and application services are separate technical and operational dependencies. On-chain permission alone cannot guarantee that a game will deliver the expected experience.
- Terms are implementation-specific. Standards do not provide a universal fee schedule, deposit policy, dispute process, or buyer-protection guarantee. Read the actual listing and agreement rather than relying on a standard’s name.
