Worldwide fisheries and aquaculture produced 235 million tonnes in 2024, according to the FAO’s 2026 assessment. That combined total includes 195 million tonnes of aquatic animals and algae; it is not a measure of wild-caught fish alone. The industry’s monetary size depends on what is counted: farm-gate value, first-sale value and international exports are different measures, not pieces of one revenue total.
What does “the fishing industry” include?
In FAO reporting, “fisheries and aquaculture” covers both capture fisheries—the harvesting of wild aquatic organisms—and aquaculture, or the farming of aquatic organisms. The 235 million-tonne 2024 production total includes aquatic animals and algae. Aquatic animals accounted for 195 million tonnes of that total.
That distinction matters: the headline production figure is broader than wild-caught fish. It also measures physical output, not sales, exports or the revenue of every business involved in catching, farming, processing, shipping and selling seafood. FAO’s SOFIA 2026 release reports the latest global production snapshot used here.
How much comes from wild capture and aquaculture?
For aquatic animals in 2024, aquaculture produced 103 million tonnes and capture fisheries produced about 92 million tonnes. Aquaculture therefore exceeded capture fisheries in animal output. FAO says capture production has remained within a range of 86–94 million tonnes since the late 1980s; aquaculture has supplied nearly all growth in aquatic production since then.

These figures compare production volume, not economic value. A tonne of farmed output and a tonne of wild-caught output do not necessarily have the same price or costs.
How big is the industry in money?
There is no single comparable all-in revenue figure established by the FAO measures cited here. The available figures describe different points in the supply chain and different years:

Farm-gate and first-sale values are production valuations; export value is a cross-border trade flow. They cover different years and economic stages, so adding them would double-count activity and create a misleading “industry revenue” total. None of these figures represents the combined turnover of every company in fishing, farming, processing, logistics and retail. The first-sale and employment figures are summarized in FAO’s 2024 report release; the export estimate is from FAO GLOBEFISH.

The primary fisheries and aquaculture sector employed an estimated 61.8 million people in 2022, according to FAO’s 2024 report. This is a people count for the primary sector, not a revenue measure or a count of everyone employed across seafood processing, transport, retail and related businesses.
