Scotland’s fishing fleet landed 509,000 tonnes of sea fish and shellfish worth £960 million in 2025, according to provisional Scottish Government figures. That is the value of catches landed by Scottish vessels—not the total value or economic contribution of Scotland’s wider seafood industry.
How much is Scotland’s fishing industry worth?
The latest located official estimate puts the value of Scottish-vessel landings at £960 million in 2025 prices. The Scottish Government Marine Directorate’s provisional 2025 statistics report that the fleet landed 509,000 tonnes. Compared with 2024, landed value rose 26% in real terms while landed tonnage fell 4%.
These figures measure the fish and shellfish landed by Scottish vessels. They do not measure the value of seafood processing, aquaculture, distribution or the wider sector’s total contribution to the economy. The distinction matters: a landing-value figure is not an estimate of industry-wide turnover or GDP.
What was caught, and what drove the value?
The 2025 total was divided among three broad types of fishing. Values below are in 2025 prices and are provisional.

Mackerel was the largest individual contributor: it was worth £497 million, or 52% of total Scottish-vessel landed value. Its landed tonnage fell 5% to 182,000 tonnes, even as its value rose 68% in 2025 prices. Haddock was the most valuable demersal species, at £49 million; Nephrops led shellfish, at £83 million.
The figures show why landed value and catch volume should not be treated as interchangeable. In 2025, total value increased even though total volume declined, with the release identifying higher mackerel prices as a major factor. A rise in value does not by itself mean that more fish were caught or that the whole seafood sector grew by the same amount.

How many vessels and fishers are there?
Scottish vessels had 1,993 active vessels and 3,738 fishers in 2025, according to the provisional Scottish Government statistics. In corrected final 2024 data, 1,525 of the 1,998 active vessels were 10 metres or under.
What counts as “Scottish fishing” in these statistics?
The Scottish Government reports more than one population, and the totals answer different questions:

- Scottish-vessel landings: catches landed by Scottish vessels, whether the landing takes place in Scotland or elsewhere. This is the population behind the 2025 headline of 509,000 tonnes and £960 million.
- Landings into Scotland: catches landed at Scottish ports by vessels of any nationality. In corrected final 2024 figures, all vessels landed 367,000 tonnes worth £583 million into Scotland. Peterhead was the largest Scottish port district by tonnage and value.
Those figures should not be added together or compared as though they describe the same fleet. They use different definitions: one follows the vessel, the other the place where the catch is landed.
How much do Scottish vessels land abroad?
In corrected final 2024 figures, Scottish vessels landed 191,000 tonnes worth £189 million abroad. That was 36% of their landings by tonnage and 26% by value. These are 2024 results, not a breakdown of the provisional 2025 total.

How do the latest figures compare with 2024?
The final 2024 totals were revised in February 2026 after the Scottish Government identified double-counted landings. The corrected figure is 532,000 tonnes worth £734 million, replacing the original published totals of 561,000 tonnes and £756 million. Even after correction, 2024 had the greatest tonnage and highest real value in the ten-year series reported by the source.
The 2025 comparison uses provisional data, while the revised 2024 figures are final. Read the two years with that difference in status in mind; further revisions could affect the 2025 totals.

What the statistics do—and do not—measure
The Scottish Government’s sea fisheries statistics cover landings by Scottish vessels, landings into Scotland by any vessel, fleet characteristics and employment on Scottish vessels. Landing weights are expressed as live-weight equivalent. The 2024 publication generally adjusts financial values to 2024 prices; the provisional 2025 release presents values in 2025 prices, so price bases should be checked when making comparisons across publications.
The 2024 introduction says Scottish-vessel data were not affected by a separate under-recording issue involving some under-10-metre vessels registered elsewhere in the UK. For UK-wide totals and comparisons, the Scottish Government recommends using the UK Sea Fisheries Statistics.
