How Bayer Crop Science Is Shaping Sustainable Agriculture in 2025

Bayer Crop Science’s 2025 sustainability strategy combines seeds, crop protection, digital tools, and farm practices. Its targets and reported emissions progress have distinct scopes and should not be mistaken for independent proof of farm-level outcomes.

Bayer Crop Science is pursuing sustainable agriculture through a combination of seeds and traits, crop protection, biologicals, digital tools, and changes to farming practices. The company groups this work under regenerative agriculture, but says the term has no commonly agreed definition and that its products are not inherently regenerative by themselves. Its 2025 reporting pairs that strategy with 2030 targets and a company-reported reduction in on-field greenhouse-gas intensity across selected crop-country combinations.

What Bayer means by regenerative agriculture

Bayer describes regenerative agriculture as an outcome-oriented way of producing crops that aims to maintain or improve productivity while benefiting nature. Its stated outcomes include healthier soil, lower greenhouse-gas emissions and greater carbon removals, maintained or restored on-farm biodiversity, water conservation, and improved social and economic well-being for farmers and communities. Bayer also acknowledges that there is no commonly agreed definition of regenerative agriculture, so this is the company’s framing rather than a universal standard. Bayer’s regenerative agriculture overview explains its terminology and caveats.

The distinction matters: a seed, pesticide, biological product, or digital tool can contribute to a farming system, but does not establish that the system achieves regenerative outcomes. Bayer puts it plainly: “While our products can be utilized in regenerative systems, they are not inherently regenerative on their own.” Outcomes depend on how farms combine inputs with practices and how results are measured.

What Bayer is changing on farms

Bayer’s approach combines technology and management rather than relying on a single product category. Its annual-report strategy points to seeds and traits, crop protection, digital farming, and new production systems. Examples it names as having potential to change production include short-stature corn, hybrid wheat, and direct-seeded rice. These are areas of strategic focus, not proof that each has already delivered a particular environmental or economic result on farms.

Crop genetics, traits, and crop protection

New crop varieties and traits are intended to support productivity and adaptation within farming systems. Crop-protection products are another part of Bayer’s portfolio. The relevant question for sustainability is not simply whether an input is new, but how it affects crop performance and environmental outcomes when used in a specific production system.

Biologicals, soil practices, and water management

Bayer’s 2025 Impact Report search listing describes a broader set of approaches, including microorganisms and inoculants, root-health work, cover crops, no-till, crop rotation, fertilization management, precision irrigation, and high-yielding crop genetics. The listing also refers to direct seeding and alternate wetting and drying in rice. These are examples of practices and tools associated with regenerative systems; the search listing does not establish results for each practice, and the Impact Report itself is not available here for detailed verification.

Digital and precision farming

Digital tools can help farmers make more targeted decisions about inputs and field operations. Bayer says it is integrating greenhouse-gas calculations and environmental-impact-reduction contributions into its development pipeline. That signals an effort to include environmental considerations in product development; it should not be read as an independently verified measurement of farm-level effects.

Bayer’s 2030 sustainability targets

Bayer reports four agriculture-related targets for 2030. Their baselines and denominators differ, so the percentages should not be compared as if they measure the same thing.

Target What Bayer says it measures Baseline or scope
30% reduction in on-field greenhouse-gas emissions per mass unit of crop produced Emissions intensity associated with crop production Against Bayer’s weighted base-year intensity
30% reduction in environmental impact per hectare Treated-area-weighted environmental impact of Bayer’s global crop-protection portfolio Against the 2014–2018 average
Support 100 million smallholder farmers Improved access to products and services Smallholders in low- and middle-income countries
25% increase in water productivity Kilograms of crop yield per cubic meter of water used for targeted smallholder customers Against the 2019–2021 baseline

Bayer says its water-productivity target currently centers on the DirectAcres initiative, which supports a shift from transplanted puddled rice to mechanized direct-seeded rice in relevant geographies, beginning in India. The target is not a claim that the same water savings apply to every crop or location. Bayer’s 2025 Annual Report provides the company’s target descriptions.

What Bayer reports it has achieved so far

Bayer reports that weighted on-field greenhouse-gas intensity across the crop-country combinations included in its target scope fell 20%, to 581 kilograms of CO2-equivalent per metric ton of crop produced, from a weighted base of 726 kilograms. The company says the underlying harvest data are from 2024 or 2025, depending on the crop-country combination, and identifies India rice and US cotton as key drivers. This is a Bayer-reported aggregate result for that scope—not an independent causal evaluation of Bayer products or a result that can be generalized to all farms or crops.

Bayer also has a separate group-wide goal of net-zero greenhouse-gas emissions across its value chain by 2050. Its climate strategy calls for at least 90% absolute reductions in Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions against 2019, with long-term emission credits for remaining emissions. This is a corporate goal; it does not mean Crop Science’s farm-level emissions have already reached net zero. The goal and its scope are described in Bayer’s annual reporting.

How to assess the significance of the strategy

Bayer’s approach is significant in the sense that it links product development, farm practices, and measurable corporate targets rather than treating sustainability as a single input or technology. But the targets and reported progress answer different questions: a portfolio-level environmental-impact target, a smallholder-access target, a water-productivity target, and an emissions-intensity result each have their own metric and scope.

  • Separate targets from outcomes: the 2030 figures are commitments, not achieved results.
  • Keep the emissions result in context: it applies to the crop-country combinations in Bayer’s target scope and uses harvest-year data that vary by combination.
  • Look for farm-level evidence: company reporting does not by itself show that a particular Bayer product caused changes in yield, soil health, biodiversity, water use, or profitability.
  • Consider local implementation: practices such as cover cropping, no-till, or direct seeding require decisions suited to crop, geography, and farm management.

For farmers and other readers, the practical measure of progress will be whether the combined system produces verifiable environmental benefits while maintaining viable production and farm economics—not simply whether a company has expanded its portfolio of products or set ambitious targets.
