How Azur Games Grew Its Hypercasual Games to 1.5 Billion Downloads

Azur Games’ 1.5 billion-download milestone reflected a shift from midcore publishing to hypercasual, supported by rapid prototyping and hands-on developer resources. The company later credited diversification and acquisitions as growth continued.

Azur Games’ 1.5 billion-download milestone was a historical company-reported figure discussed in a 2021 GamesBeat interview—not its current total. Co-founder Dmitry Yaminsky traced the rise to a pivot from midcore publishing into hypercasual games, a high-volume prototype process, and hands-on support for development teams. Those are the company’s explanations, not an independently audited breakdown of what caused each download.

What the 1.5 billion figure represents

GamesBeat reported in June 2021 that Azur Games had surpassed 1.5 billion downloads. The figure is a company milestone reported in an interview, not an independently audited count. Downloads or installs should not be read as unique players: a person may install a game again, including after changing phones.

The milestone also describes a portfolio, not one breakout game. GamesBeat cited Sensor Tower in reporting that Stack Ball and Hit Master 3D were among the 20 most-downloaded games worldwide in the first quarter discussed in the article. Yaminsky separately said Stack Ball had passed 300 million downloads and WormsZone.io had passed 200 million at the time. These are figures attached to the 2021 reporting context, not current totals.

GamesBeat’s 2021 profile is the source for the milestone and game examples.

How Azur moved from midcore games to hypercasual

An earlier publishing business

According to the GamesBeat profile, Yaminsky started the company in 2016 to publish midcore games. Azur helped launch Modern Strike Online through marketing and later acquired half of its development studio. GamesBeat reported that the title had more than 70 million downloads. This early work gave the company experience with publishing and marketing before its hypercasual pivot.

A two-person team changed the direction

In 2017, Azur experimented with hypercasual games. A game built by a two-person team became a hit, and the company shifted its strategy toward the category. The account suggests that the pivot grew out of an experiment rather than a plan to abandon midcore publishing from the outset.

The prototype funnel and support for developers

Yaminsky described a process built around producing and testing many concepts while helping teams improve them. In the 2021 interview, he said: “We prototype about 200 games a month, and after we test them, we launch about one or two games per month.” That is a company-reported operating figure from the interview, not an audited production statistic.

The approach went beyond accepting or rejecting a game based only on its first performance metrics. Yaminsky said Azur shared marketing and analytics experience and supplied capabilities that partner teams might lack, including creative, design, and art support. As he put it: “We put the emphasis on communication and providing the necessary resources: for example, if the team doesn’t have motion designers, game designers or artists, we involve them as needed.”

That model linked publishing with practical development support: test concepts, learn from results, and bring in expertise to help refine promising projects. Yaminsky characterized the approach as different from publishers that made decisions on initial metrics alone. The interview describes Azur’s strategy; it does not provide comparative data proving that this model caused a particular share of the download total.

What Azur later said drove growth beyond 1.5 billion

In a 2023 interview, Yaminsky looked back on the company’s growth to more than eight billion installs. He credited several factors rather than a single hit or tactic:

  • Early entry: Azur entered hypercasual while the category was expanding.
  • Accumulated expertise and experimentation: the company built experience and continued testing game ideas.
  • Diversification: it broadened its portfolio beyond a narrow reliance on one kind of game.
  • Market conditions: Yaminsky included pandemic-era growth in the wider games industry among the factors.
  • Acquisitions: he also cited acquisitions as part of the expansion.

These are Yaminsky’s retrospective explanations, not an independently measured causal analysis. The interview does not assign a percentage of growth to any one factor. It also notes that installs may include re-installs when people change phones.

By 2023, Yaminsky described hypercasual as having plateaued and said competition made hits harder to launch. That qualification matters: the company’s later growth did not mean the original market conditions or game-making opportunity remained unchanged. GamesBeat’s 2023 interview provides the later retrospective.

How the company’s scale has changed

Azur’s official About page says the company surpassed 11 billion downloads in 2026. This is the company’s current reported figure as of the page accessed October 8, 2026; it is not an independently audited count or a measure of unique players. The change in reported totals provides context for the 2021 milestone, but the totals alone do not show how much came from particular games, markets, platforms, or acquisition channels.

Azur Games’ About Us page identifies the company as a mobile-game publisher and developer and lists capabilities including product management, monetization, analytics, live operations, localization, quality assurance, publishing, user acquisition, and creative support.

What the available figures cannot tell you

The reported totals establish the scale Azur has claimed at different points, while the interviews explain how its leadership understood the growth. They do not supply a verified breakdown of the 1.5 billion downloads by individual game, geography, platform, paid versus organic acquisition, or internally developed versus partner-published titles. Nor do downloads alone reveal whether players stayed, how games monetized, or whether the business was profitable. The growth story is best understood as an attributed account of strategy and scale, not proof that any one practice guarantees similar results for another publisher.
