Barenaked Ladies did not make a literal million dollars from the song’s premise. “If I Had a Million Dollars” began as Ed Robertson’s attempt to entertain children on a bus ride home from music camp; he later shaped the silly details into a song credited to Robertson and Steven Page and associated with the band’s 1992 album Gordon.
How Ed Robertson came up with the song
Robertson told Forbes in 2019 that he was 18 when he wrote the song. He was a counselor at music camp and came up with it on the two-and-a-half-hour bus ride home, while trying to keep the children entertained.

He recalled that the lyrics included specific, silly things that had happened at camp. As he worked with those details, he began to think the idea might resonate if he found the right things to talk about. That firsthand account explains the song’s playful starting point without turning it into a claim about the band’s earnings.
What “If I Had a Million Dollars” is about
The narrator imagines what he would buy for someone he loves if he had a million dollars. The premise is a romantic gesture, but the imagined purchases are deliberately extravagant, odd, and comic rather than a practical list of investments or financial advice. That contrast—an enormous hypothetical fortune paired with silly specifics—is central to the song’s appeal.

This is an interpretation of the song’s premise, not a confirmed statement of an official message. The title’s million-dollar figure is part of the fantasy, not evidence that the band literally earned that amount from the song.
