The best way to maximize your net proceeds is to match each item to the right sales channel. Sell complete PCs, cases, monitors, and other bulky equipment locally when possible. Use eBay or HardwareSwap for high-value, identifiable components with national demand. Bundle low-value parts, and sanitize every SSD or hard drive before it leaves your possession.
“Top dollar” means the most money you keep after marketplace fees, shipping, packing, travel, payment costs, and return risk—not the highest asking price.

Start with an inventory, not a listing
Before deciding where to sell, identify exactly what you own and what a buyer will receive. Record model numbers, serial numbers, purchase dates, accessories, warranty documents, and known defects. Photograph the assembled PC before disassembly.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- CPU: exact model, socket, stepping where relevant, pin or contact condition, and whether the retail cooler is included.
- GPU: manufacturer, exact model, VRAM, cooler design, outputs, warranty, usage history, accessories, temperatures, fan behavior, and coil whine.
- Motherboard: model, revision, chipset, BIOS version, socket-pin condition, I/O shield, Wi-Fi antenna, ports, slots, and missing hardware.
- RAM: DDR generation, total capacity, number of modules, rated speed, timings, kit part number, and tested profile.
- Storage: model, capacity, interface, health percentage, power-on hours, and sanitization status.
- Power supply: exact model, wattage, age, modular cables included, warranty, and operating history.
- Case or cooler: dimensions, panels, scratches, fans, mounting hardware, pump condition, and shipping feasibility.
- Complete PC: full specification, storage status, Windows activation details if known, and proof of stability.
This inventory also separates a valuable component from a low-value remainder. A premium GPU may retain strong demand even when the case, cooler, and power supply add little to a complete system.

Sell the whole PC or part it out?
| Choose a complete-PC sale when… | Part it out when… |
|---|---|
| The build is balanced and ready to use. | The GPU, CPU, or platform has strong independent demand. |
| The case is attractive and undamaged. | The case, cooler, or power supply is generic. |
| You can demonstrate it locally. | The system is outdated, unbalanced, or hard to upgrade. |
| You value speed and simplicity. | Buyers are likely to want their own case, storage, or graphics card. |
| Shipping would be expensive or risky. | The complete system exceeds what local buyers typically spend. |
Do not assume the component total is automatically worth more than the complete computer. A complete PC may sell for less because the buyer dislikes the case, distrusts the power supply, wants a different GPU, or would face expensive shipping. Conversely, parting out creates more listings, more packing work, more transactions, and more opportunities for disputes.
A practical hybrid strategy
- Calculate a realistic complete-system price.
- List the PC locally for a defined period and state that a part-out may follow.
- Prepare component listings while the local listing is active.
- If buyers repeatedly ask about the GPU or CPU, sell those high-demand items separately.
- Bundle the remaining CPU, motherboard, and RAM as a tested platform.
- Sell the case, cooler, fans, and other bulky leftovers locally.
Keep inventory synchronized across sites. Cross-posting the same component without tight tracking can lead to accidental overselling, cancellations, and account penalties.
Price from sold evidence, not wishful thinking
Active listings show what sellers hope to receive. Completed or sold listings show what buyers actually paid. On eBay, the Computers & Networking Seller Central provides tools for researching average selling prices.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Search the exact model number, including brand and capacity where relevant.
- Filter for completed or sold listings.
- Exclude materially different conditions, accessories, warranties, and shipping terms.
- Separate auction results from fixed-price sales.
- Compare several recent transactions rather than relying on one unusually high result.
- Calculate your expected net proceeds.
Use three price targets
- Fast-sale price: slightly below comparable sold prices.
- Market price: near the middle of the recent comparable range.
- Premium asking price: justified by warranty, complete accessories, excellent documentation, recent purchase, or unusually clean presentation.
Avoid rules such as “subtract 20% from retail.” Used-PC value depends on replacement cost, new-generation launches, supply, platform compatibility, warranty, condition, and buyer demand.
Calculate net proceeds
Net proceeds = sale price + buyer-paid shipping
− marketplace and payment fees
− shipping label
− insurance or signature service
− packing materials
− expected return or dispute cost
For a local transaction:
Net proceeds = cleared payment − travel cost − transaction cost − time and risk cost
For example, a $300 national sale may be inferior to a $260 local sale if fees, a $25 shipping label, $10 of packing supplies, and return risk consume the difference. Use the actual fee schedule for your account and category.
Choose the venue by component
| Item | Best first venue | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| High-value GPU, current CPU, premium motherboard | eBay or HardwareSwap | National enthusiast demand and detailed specifications. |
| Complete gaming PC | Facebook Marketplace | Local buyers avoid shipping damage and can inspect the system. |
| CPU, motherboard, and RAM bundle | HardwareSwap, Facebook Marketplace, or eBay | A usable platform reduces compatibility uncertainty. |
| RAM, fans, coolers, and cables | Local bundle or combined lot | Shipping and fees can consume the proceeds. |
| SSD or hard drive | eBay, HardwareSwap, or local sale | Demand exists, but sanitization and health evidence are essential. |
| Old, obscure, incomplete, or bulky parts | Local sale, specialist groups, or recycling | National shipping may not justify the margin. |
| Defective or untested parts | Clearly labeled parts listing or recycling | Accurate disclosure reduces disputes. |
eBay
eBay is usually strongest for standardized, shippable parts whose exact model numbers attract buyers nationwide. Its broad audience and sold-listing data can outweigh its fees for GPUs, CPUs, RAM kits, motherboards, and unusual components.
There is no single universal eBay fee. The current non-Store table lists many categories at 13.6% up to $7,500 plus $0.40 for orders over $10, while the Store schedule lists 7.35% up to $2,500 for several component categories, including CPUs, RAM, motherboards, motherboard/CPU combinations, and hard drives or SSDs. Your category, account type, store status, seller performance, and order details matter. Check eBay’s non-Store fee page and Store fee schedule immediately before pricing.

eBay’s fee calculation may include the item price, shipping collected from the buyer, sales tax, and other applicable amounts. Compare the all-in price rather than assuming “free shipping” is cheaper.
Use the exact model number in the title, describe testing honestly, show accessories, and retain serial-number, packing, tracking, and benchmark evidence. eBay is a poor fit for low-value bulky cases, unstable systems, and items where shipping damage would erase your margin.
Facebook Marketplace
Facebook Marketplace is usually the best first option for complete PCs, cases, monitors, large coolers, and other local-pickup items. A local buyer can inspect or briefly test a PC, while you avoid packing and carrier damage.
Do not state categorically that Facebook has no fees. Local cash transactions differ from shipped or platform-processed sales, and features vary by listing and region. See Facebook’s guidance on Marketplace transactions and buying and selling options.
Recommended Free Tools
Meet in a public, well-lit location, preferably one with surveillance or a designated safe-exchange area. Do not accept a payment screenshot as proof. For cash, inspect the bills or use a bank lobby. For electronic payment, verify funds in your own account before releasing the equipment. Facebook advises sellers to remove personal data, describe flaws, and identify whether electronics are new or used; follow its electronics-selling guidance.
HardwareSwap
HardwareSwap suits knowledgeable buyers and sellers, especially for CPU, motherboard, and RAM bundles. Buyers generally understand sockets, chipsets, VRAM, memory kits, and BIOS compatibility, so detailed technical evidence has more value.
Current rules require PayPal Goods & Services or PayPal invoices for shipped transactions; local cash is permitted for in-person trades. The rules prohibit Friends & Family, Cash App, Venmo, bank transfers, gift cards, and similar methods for marketplace transactions. Read the payment rules and current marketplace rules before posting.

Include timestamped photographs, exact condition, known flaws, included accessories, price, shipping terms, location, and the approved payment method. HardwareSwap has a smaller audience than eBay and is not a shortcut around payment or shipping risk.
Mercari
Mercari can work for smaller shippable parts and accessories when its simple listing workflow is worth the fee. Its current U.S. help page says new and updated listings carry a 10% selling fee on the item price and buyer-paid shipping. Check the current Mercari fee policy before listing.
It is generally a weaker fit for expensive GPUs, complete PCs, bulky cases, and parts that need extensive technical explanation. The buyer pool may be less concentrated in PC enthusiasts than eBay or HardwareSwap.
Other local and specialist channels
OfferUp, Craigslist, local PC-building groups, university or workplace boards, independent repair shops, refurbishers, and trade-in programs can all be useful. Trade-ins usually prioritize convenience rather than top dollar, so compare the quote with expected net proceeds after shipping, fees, and your time. Verify current rules and fees for any channel before relying on it.
Component-by-component selling advice
Graphics cards
List the exact manufacturer and model, VRAM, outputs, adapters, purchase date, warranty, and whether the card was used for mining, rendering, or continuous heavy workloads. Include a GPU-Z or equivalent identification screenshot, a benchmark or stress-test result, temperatures, fan behavior, and any coil whine. Photograph the PCB edge, cooler, ports, screw heads, and original packaging.

CPUs
State the exact model and socket, whether the stock cooler is included, and whether the CPU boots and sustains a normal load. Disclose delidding, lapping, overclocking, unusual voltage history, and any damaged pins or contacts. Ship it in a rigid clamshell or protective box—not loose in a padded envelope.

Motherboards
Show the socket under magnification, a POST or BIOS screen, rear I/O, RAM and M.2 slots if tested, CMOS battery, I/O shield, Wi-Fi antenna, BIOS version, and all missing or damaged hardware. Photograph socket pins clearly. Bundling a compatible CPU and RAM often makes an older platform easier to sell.
RAM
List DDR generation, capacity, module count, rated speed, timings, exact kit number, and whether the advertised profile works. Sell matched kits together and include a memory-test result when available. Mixing unrelated modules can create compatibility problems and weaken buyer confidence.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →SSDs and hard drives
Storage requires both a health report and a data-security process:
- Back up anything you need.
- Sign out of accounts and remove personal files.
- Use a sanitization method appropriate for the drive type.
- Verify that the data is no longer accessible.
- Record health percentage, power-on hours, model, capacity, and interface.
- Disclose the drive’s condition honestly.
Deleting files or performing a basic format is not always sufficient for sensitive data. For business, regulated, or highly sensitive information, use a documented professional sanitization process or qualified physical-destruction service. A used SSD is not automatically defective; the distinctive risks are data exposure, wear, health uncertainty, and buyer distrust.
Power supplies
List the exact model, wattage, efficiency certification if relevant, age, purchase date, included modular cables, and any noise or shutdown history. Never substitute modular cables from another PSU merely because the connector fits. Electrically incompatible cables can destroy hardware. Missing original cables can materially reduce value.
Cases and liquid coolers
Cases are often poor national-shipping candidates because they are large, fragile, and costly to pack. Tempered-glass panels can break in transit. Liquid coolers require complete mounting hardware and honest disclosure of pump condition, noise, leakage history, and age. Local pickup or bundling with a complete PC is usually more economical.

Test and document before listing
At minimum:
- Boot to BIOS.
- Confirm CPU, RAM, and storage identification.
- Run a short CPU stability test.
- Run a GPU benchmark or graphics load.
- Check temperatures, fan behavior, and thermal throttling.
- Run a memory test.
- Read SSD or hard-drive health information.
- Test every motherboard slot or port you claim works.
- Photograph results with identifying information where practical.
“Powers on” is not the same as “fully tested.” If you cannot verify stability, slots, ports, storage health, or cooling, label the item “untested” or “for parts/not working.” Misrepresenting condition is one of the fastest ways to create a return or dispute.

Clean with compressed air carefully, holding fans still while blowing them out. Do not spray liquid onto electronics. Keep screws, brackets, cables, manuals, and adapters together. Disclose major service such as replacing thermal pads or repasting a GPU.
Write a buyer-complete listing
A strong title identifies the exact item rather than relying on vague claims:
[Brand] [Exact model] [capacity/specification] — tested, accessories included
Explain:
- Exact model and compatibility.
- What was tested and how.
- Measured temperatures, health, or benchmark results where relevant.
- Usage history, including mining or continuous heavy workloads if known.
- Every included and excluded item.
- Every flaw, missing part, noise, cosmetic mark, or limitation.
- Warranty status and whether transfer is documented.
- Local-pickup and shipping terms.
- Return condition and serial-number documentation where appropriate.
Use “tested and working,” “untested,” and “for parts/not working” accurately. Avoid “works great” without evidence. For OEM components from Dell, HP, Lenovo, or another manufacturer, disclose proprietary connectors, form factors, BIOS restrictions, or mounting systems instead of implying standard ATX compatibility.
Protect the transaction and ship correctly
Before payment
- Keep communication and payment inside the venue’s approved process.
- Do not accept fake payment screenshots.
- Do not let a buyer redirect a shipment to a different address.
- Do not accept Friends & Family or off-platform payment for a shipped high-value item when the venue forbids it or protection depends on an approved transaction.
PayPal Seller Protection is not automatic. Eligibility may require, among other conditions, shipping to the address shown in the transaction details and retaining proof of delivery. Review the current PayPal Seller Protection terms.
Document expensive shipments
- Save the listing, photographs, messages, and serial number.
- Photograph the item and package contents before sealing.
- Record a continuous packing video for unusually expensive items.
- Use tracking and retain the carrier acceptance receipt.
- Consider insurance and signature confirmation when justified by value and platform rules.
- Ship only to the protected transaction address.
Use component-specific packaging
| Item | Packaging essentials |
|---|---|
| GPU | Anti-static bag, rigid support, snug cushioning, and an outer carton for valuable cards. |
| CPU | Rigid clamshell, pressure protection for pins or contacts, and a box. |
| Motherboard | Anti-static bag, socket cover, rigid support, and a box that prevents flex. |
| RAM or M.2 drive | Anti-static packaging plus a rigid mailer or small box. |
| Hard drive | Substantial cushioning on every side and no loose movement. |
| Case or glass panel | Prefer local pickup; otherwise separately protect glass and immobilize internal parts. |
Check current carrier rules for electronics, batteries, and other regulated contents. USPS provides hazardous-material guidance and mailing standards. Do not assume every electronic device ships under identical rules, especially when lithium batteries are included.
Avoid scams and resolve disputes carefully
Common local-sale scams
- Fake payment confirmations or counterfeit checks.
- Overpayment followed by a request to return the difference.
- Requests to move to email or an unrelated payment service.
- Pressure to release the item before funds clear.
- Meetups at a private home when a public location is practical.
For a local sale, verify cleared funds in your own account or inspect cash safely. Record the serial number and sale details, and do not disclose more personal information than necessary.
If a buyer reports a problem
- Ask for a clear description, photographs, or video.
- Compare the returned item’s serial number and condition with your records.
- Do not authorize a refund before the item is returned when the platform’s procedure permits waiting.
- Do not accuse the buyer of fraud without evidence.
- Follow the venue’s dispute process and preserve all documentation.
Special cases
Recalled or unsafe products
Check whether an item has been recalled or presents a safety issue before listing it. The Consumer Product Safety Commission’s online-seller guidance and reseller guide explain why recalled products should not be offered for sale.
Mining history
Mining history is a risk and value consideration, not proof that a GPU has failed. State what you know, describe current testing, and avoid claiming a card has never been used for mining if you cannot establish that.
Taxes
Tax treatment depends on your federal, state, and local circumstances, including whether you sold personal property at a gain, regularly resell equipment, or operate a business. Consult current IRS and state guidance rather than relying on a universal rule.
The highest-net-proceeds playbook
- Inventory every component and accessory.
- Remove accounts and sanitize or remove storage.
- Test the hardware and record evidence.
- Check recent exact-model sold prices.
- Calculate net proceeds after fees, shipping, packing, travel, and risk.
- List a complete PC locally first when it is balanced, demonstrable, and bulky.
- List high-demand standardized parts nationally through eBay or HardwareSwap.
- Bundle compatible CPU, motherboard, and RAM; lot low-value accessories.
- Reprice after a defined period based on views, inquiries, and new sold evidence.
- Recycle or donate leftovers whose realistic net value is lower than the cost and risk of selling them.
Finally, compare venues on expected net price, buyer reach, speed, fees, shipping difficulty, dispute exposure, buyer expertise, personal safety, time required, and your ability to demonstrate the item. The right venue is the one that produces the best realistic outcome—not necessarily the largest gross sale.
