Investigators and reporters linked an August 2024 carjacking and attempted abduction in Danbury, Connecticut, to an alleged cryptocurrency theft a week earlier—but the reported link was the suspects’ belief that the couple’s son could access crypto, not a proven finding that the theft directly caused the attack.
What happened in Danbury
On August 25, 2024, a couple arriving at a gated community in Danbury were reportedly intentionally rear-ended. According to Brian Krebs’s account, which cited police and court documents, men then forced the couple into a van, bound them, and assaulted the husband. Police pursued the van and found the couple inside after it crashed and was abandoned. Police also recovered the couple’s Lamborghini. Krebs on Security reported the incident and its details.
Why the couple were reportedly targeted
Krebs reported that Connecticut prosecutors said the alleged abductors targeted the couple because co-conspirators believed their son had access to significant digital currency. The alleged plan was to ransom the parents. That is a reported account of the suspects’ motive, not a proven causal finding or proof that the son possessed or controlled the stolen funds.
The alleged plot followed a separate cryptocurrency theft around a week earlier. The connection described in reporting is that the alleged abductors believed the son could reach cryptocurrency proceeds; the incidents themselves were distinct.

What the crypto case alleges
In a September 19, 2024 release, the U.S. Department of Justice said an indictment charged Malone Lam and Jeandiel Serrano with conspiring to steal and launder more than $230 million in cryptocurrency from a Washington, D.C., victim. The DOJ said the indictment alleges that on August 18, 2024, conspirators obtained more than 4,100 Bitcoin, worth over $230 million at the time. The DOJ release describes the charges and alleged amount.
Krebs and Cybernews used a $243 million figure in their 2024 coverage, while the DOJ release describes the alleged value as “over $230 million.” These are differently worded reported figures; the DOJ’s wording should not be silently converted into an exact $243 million total. How the alleged theft was carried out
Krebs, recounting details attributed to blockchain investigator ZachXBT, described a phone-based social-engineering operation rather than a direct breach of a blockchain protocol. The alleged attackers impersonated Google and cryptocurrency-exchange support, used spoofed caller identification, persuaded the victim to reset multi-factor authentication and send funds, and used AnyDesk during the interaction. These operational details come from Krebs’s account; they are not laid out at comparable length in the DOJ press release.

What is established—and what remains an allegation
- The DOJ announced charges against Lam and Serrano in connection with an alleged cryptocurrency theft and laundering conspiracy. An indictment is not a conviction: the DOJ release states that “all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.”
- Krebs reported six arrests in connection with the alleged kidnapping plot. Cybernews reported that the suspects were ages 18 to 26; that age range is Cybernews’s report.
- Krebs stated on October 9, 2024, that Veer Chetal had not been publicly charged at that time. That is a dated status report, not a current status update, and association or reporting does not establish that someone was charged or convicted.
- The cited coverage and DOJ release do not establish later court outcomes for either matter. The incident details and claimed motive above are attributed to reporting; the primary Connecticut criminal complaint was not directly reviewed.
