Amrik Sukhdev Dhaba’s history points to 1956—not 1967—as its founding year. Its appeal to truck drivers grew from practical service: a meal, a place to rest, and clean bathrooms where drivers could bathe. Over time, the family expanded seating, broadened the menu and added facilities that made the highway stop a destination for more than drivers.
When did Amrik Sukhdev Dhaba begin?
The dhaba’s official history and reporting by The Indian Express identify 1956 as the founding year. The title’s 1967 date is not supported by these accounts. The Navbharat Times also gives 1956.
It began as a modest highway stop for truck drivers. The official history describes a basic meal of dal, roti, vegetables and rice, served on charpais. The Indian Express reports that the original setup had about 20 charpais and served drivers passing through Murthal.
What changes made the stop more useful to drivers?
Clean bathrooms for bathing
The clearest innovation in the owners’ account was installing clean bathrooms. Amrik Singh, identified as an owner by The Indian Express, said the family had encountered the lack of bathrooms at dhabas during its own trips and wanted truck drivers to be able to bathe at their stop. The change addressed a basic comfort need beyond food.

More places to sit and rest
Amrik Singh said the bathrooms helped prompt the family to increase seating from 20 to 100 charpais. That is the owner’s account of how the change affected the business, not an independently measured causal finding. The larger seating capacity gave more visitors a place to stop, eat and rest.
Food and service for everyday needs
The Navbharat Times frames the dhaba’s approach around meeting truck drivers’ food, drink and daily needs. A meal and a resting place made the stop useful during a journey; the bathroom improvement added another practical service. The available accounts describe these changes, but do not isolate the effect of any one of them on the dhaba’s later popularity.

How did the dhaba grow beyond its original setup?
Over time, the business added tables and chairs, expanded its menu, emphasized hygiene and developed a hotel, according to its official history and The Indian Express. Those changes broadened the experience beyond the original charpai-based roadside stop and made the business relevant to a wider range of visitors.
The official website describes its kitchen as using brass utensils, whole-wheat flour for rotis and paranthas, RO-filtered water, sendha namak, desi ghee, peanut oil and mustard oil. These are the business’s own descriptions, not independent assessments of nutrition or food safety. Its website also describes hotel rooms, conference facilities, banquets and weddings.

What do the visitor figures show?
In a report published on December 31, 2024, The Indian Express attributed two daily-visitor estimates to the owners: about 100 truck drivers in 1956 and 6,000–7,000 visitors at the time of the report. These are owner estimates, not audited counts, and the latter should not be read as a current daily total. They illustrate the scale of the change the owners describe, but do not establish which innovation drove it.
