No. Eurac Research’s August 5, 2026 recruitment notice says all volunteer positions have been filled. The notice asks people not to send individual inquiries or applications because the team cannot respond.
What was the study, and where did it take place?
MAHE was a Eurac Research study of how four weeks of moderate-altitude exposure affect healthy adults who normally live close to sea level. The project planned to enroll 24 people and expose them to an altitude of 2,000–2,500 meters. The mountain phase took place at Zufallhütte (Rifugio Nino Corsi) in Val Martello, South Tyrol, at about 2,265 meters.
Eurac says more than 200 million people worldwide live above 2,000 meters. The institute explains that altitude studies are often conducted at 3,400–5,000 meters, even though most people living at altitude are below 2,500 meters. Whether findings from higher-altitude research also apply at moderate altitudes remains comparatively underexplored, according to Eurac’s project description.

What did the €400 offer cover?
The 2026 flyer offered €400 gross reimbursement for participation time and meals during the study. Gross means the amount is before any applicable deductions; the flyer does not establish a take-home amount or say that travel costs were covered. This was compensation for a research commitment, not a salary for mountain work.
What would participants have to do?
The planned study involved more than staying in a hut. Diet and physical activity were closely controlled, and participants underwent repeated measurements before, during, and after the mountain stay. Eurac’s retrospective account lists measures of heart and lung function, blood volume, exercise capacity, sympathetic nerve activity, metabolism and appetite, and sleep quality.

The 2026 flyer described a schedule spanning several locations:

Who could take part?
The flyer sought healthy men and women aged 18–40 with normal body weight. These were screening criteria for this specific study, not general medical advice. Listed exclusions included:
- Regular endurance training more than twice per week.
- Smoking; alcohol or drug abuse; hypertension; or chronic medication use.
- Regular or prolonged stays above 1,500 meters during the four weeks before the study.
- Special diets such as vegan diets, food allergies or intolerances, or eating disorders.
- Pregnancy or diagnosed iron deficiency.
All candidates were subject to the study’s screening process. Meeting some criteria would not, by itself, guarantee selection.

Is this a mountain job or a free holiday?
No. MAHE was a controlled research study, and the €400 was described as gross reimbursement for participation time. The stay included a prescribed schedule, monitoring, and restrictions on diet and activity. Eurac’s account of the project describes physiological and behavioral measurements, not ordinary job duties or leisure travel.
What to know if you saw an older application headline
The “looking for volunteers” framing reflected the recruitment announcement when it was published, but it is no longer current. Eurac’s August 5, 2026 notice is the relevant status update: recruitment is closed, and no places remain.
