How Airbnb Survived Its Early “Trough of Sorrow” and Reached a Reported $1 Billion Valuation

Airbnb’s early growth included a funding struggle, election-themed cereal sales, Y Combinator, seed investment, and a 2011 Series B that TechCrunch reported at a valuation above $1 billion.

Airbnb’s path to a reported billion-dollar valuation was not a smooth climb. In 2008, the founders struggled to raise money, tried selling election-themed cereal, and worked through Y Combinator. The company later secured seed support and, by July 2011, announced a $112 million Series B. TechCrunch reported that the round valued Airbnb above $1 billion; Airbnb’s own announcement confirmed the financing but did not state a valuation.

How Airbnb began: hosting guests, then building a business

Brian Chesky and Joe Gebbia’s experience hosting guests in their San Francisco apartment helped seed the idea for Airbnb. Nathan Blecharczyk joined as a co-founder, bringing programming expertise. The founders were still working on Airbnb through the 2008–09 Y Combinator period. The available accounts support this broad origin story, but do not establish a single moment when a fully formed company emerged.

Why Airbnb’s founders sold cereal

In 2008, as they tried to keep the young business going, Chesky and Gebbia sold election-themed cereal boxes called “Obama-O’s” and “Cap’n McCains.” This was an improvised fundraising effort—not part of Airbnb’s lodging product.

Y Combinator co-founder Jessica Livingston later recalled the founders’ funding bind: “They couldn’t raise any money.” Sequoia Capital’s retrospective account also describes the cereal sales as a way to keep the lights on. Neither account establishes an independently audited total for the proceeds, so a precise figure should not be treated as verified.

How Y Combinator and seed funding helped

Livingston recalls interviewing the founders in November 2008, during an unusually difficult period for raising money. Airbnb co-founder Brian Chesky later wrote that by January 2009 all three founders had fully dedicated themselves to Airbnb during Y Combinator. The accelerator provided a structured opportunity to develop the business, but the accounts do not describe it as an instant turnaround.

Sequoia Capital’s retrospective accounts say it met the founders after the program, when Airbnb had around 1,000 listings, and led the seed round. Sequoia’s “The Art of Hospitality” gives the seed round as $600,000. These are retrospective investor accounts; the listing count and round details should be understood in that context.

What Airbnb reported before its 2011 billion-dollar valuation

On July 25, 2011, Airbnb announced that it had raised $112 million in Series B financing, bringing its reported total funding to $119.8 million. In that announcement, the company said it had more than two million nights booked and more than 30 million page views per month. It also reported 54 million Airbnb Social Connections after the feature launched in May.

Those were company-reported figures from 2011, not independently audited measures of revenue or a description of Airbnb today. The announcement confirms the financing amount and operating milestones, but does not state the company’s valuation.

TechCrunch reported contemporaneously, on July 24, 2011, that the financing put Airbnb above a $1 billion valuation and relayed a possible $1.3 billion figure. That makes “$1 billion valuation” a reported characterization of the Series B, not a valuation disclosed in Airbnb’s own release.

What “the trough of sorrow” means—and what it does not

“Trough of sorrow” is a startup-growth metaphor for the discouraging stretch when a new company has not yet found sustained traction. Y Combinator’s discussion of the phrase describes a common startup slog and refers to a graph associated with Chesky. It does not establish that Airbnb coined the phrase or formally used it as the name for a specific stage in its history.

Applied to Airbnb, the phrase is best understood as retrospective shorthand for a difficult early period: fundraising was hard, the founders improvised to raise cash, and the company kept developing its marketplace. The evidence does not show that Airbnb stopped operating or that any single intervention alone caused its later growth.

The New Real Book
  • Used Book in Good Condition
  • Founder persistence and improvisation: the cereal campaign was a resourceful side effort during a cash crunch.
  • Structured early support: Y Combinator gave the founders an opportunity to work on the business, and Sequoia later led seed financing.
  • Marketplace activity: early listings and the company’s 2011 booked-night figures offered evidence of activity, though they do not by themselves establish profitability.
  • Different kinds of evidence: Airbnb’s release documented the round and its own metrics; the valuation above $1 billion came from contemporaneous media reporting.
