The main architectural choice is usually between an AI-optimized Ethernet design—often using RDMA over Converged Ethernet (RoCE)—and InfiniBand, a separate high-performance fabric with RDMA capabilities. Optical fiber is not a third fabric: it is a physical link medium that can carry either one.
There is no universal winner. The right design depends on communication patterns, cluster scale and topology, operations expertise, interoperability, required reach, and the exact switches, network adapters, transceivers, and cabling selected.

What role does networking play in an AI data center?
Modern AI training and inference are distributed. A model may be divided across many GPUs in multiple servers, while checkpoints, datasets, logs, and orchestration services reside elsewhere. The network carries the traffic between those components.

- East-west traffic: GPU-to-GPU and server-to-server communication inside the cluster. Collective operations used during distributed training can exchange large volumes of data repeatedly.
- North-south traffic: Connections from the cluster to storage systems, users, schedulers, monitoring tools, and external services.
If a GPU waits for a delayed exchange, expensive compute capacity sits idle. Network design therefore affects utilization, job completion time, scaling efficiency, and the number of accelerators that can work as one system. A fabric includes switches, network interface cards or SuperNICs, links, software, and the topology connecting them—not merely a cable or a port-speed label.

Keep NVLink separate from the data-center fabric
NVLink connects GPUs at a different layer from the data-center network. NVIDIA’s DGX B300 reference material lists NVLink alongside XDR InfiniBand and Spectrum-X Ethernet, but they solve different interconnection problems. NVLink can provide connections inside a GPU system; Ethernet or InfiniBand can connect systems across the cluster. Treating them as competing versions of one technology leads to incorrect designs and comparisons.
Ethernet, InfiniBand, and optical fiber: three different layers

An optical link can be part of an Ethernet fabric or an InfiniBand fabric. Conversely, choosing Ethernet or InfiniBand does not by itself specify whether a particular hop uses copper, a pluggable optic and fiber, or an active optical cable. Compatibility must be checked across the switch or NIC port, module, connector, fiber type, and cable length.
How an Ethernet AI fabric works
RoCE carries RDMA over Ethernet
RDMA (Remote Direct Memory Access) lets a capable adapter move data directly between the memory of two systems with less CPU and software involvement than a conventional network data path. RDMA is a transport capability; Ethernet is the underlying fabric in a RoCE design.
NVIDIA describes Spectrum-X as an AI-oriented Ethernet platform combining Spectrum switches with BlueField-3 SuperNICs and ConnectX NICs for GPU-to-GPU east-west traffic. That is a specific platform architecture, not a statement that every Ethernet network automatically has AI-cluster behavior. An ordinary Ethernet installation may lack the adapters, switch features, configuration, and operational controls needed for demanding distributed workloads.

What the components do
- GPU servers: Generate and consume training or inference data.
- ConnectX NICs or BlueField-3 SuperNICs: Put network processing close to the host or accelerator and, in NVIDIA’s descriptions, provide RDMA and RoCE acceleration.
- Top-of-rack and spine switches: Provide the paths between servers and across the cluster according to the selected topology.
- RoCE software and configuration: Carry RDMA traffic over Ethernet and coordinate the behavior expected by the adapters and switches.
- Optical or copper links: Physically connect the ports; the medium does not change Ethernet into InfiniBand.
A separate NVIDIA HGX AI Factory description gives BlueField-3 Ethernet connectivity of up to 400 Gb/s with RDMA and RoCE acceleration. That is a product capability stated for that architecture and generation; it is not a universal speed for Ethernet networks or a guarantee of application throughput.
Operational implications
An Ethernet AI fabric can fit organizations that already operate Ethernet tools, skills, and cabling practices, but an AI-optimized deployment still needs deliberate engineering. Validate adapter and switch support, traffic classes, congestion behavior, firmware, telemetry, and the path between every participating GPU server. A high nominal port rate cannot compensate for an unsuitable topology or misconfigured fabric.
How an InfiniBand AI fabric works
A purpose-built RDMA fabric
InfiniBand is a separate high-performance networking technology designed with RDMA capability. NVIDIA’s DGX SuperPOD component documentation describes it as “a high-performance, low latency, RDMA capable networking technology, proven over 20 years in the harshest compute environments to provide the best inter-node network performance.” That is NVIDIA’s product description, not an independently controlled comparison proving that InfiniBand is fastest for every workload.

In an InfiniBand cluster, host channel adapters, InfiniBand switches, links, and fabric-management software form a coordinated system. The design can be optimized for the repeated, tightly synchronized exchanges common in large distributed jobs. The same architecture may use another network for management or storage, so “the InfiniBand cluster” does not necessarily mean every packet in the facility uses InfiniBand.

Where InfiniBand fits
NVIDIA’s DGX B300 reference material names XDR InfiniBand and Spectrum-X Ethernet as compute-interconnect options in the same large-scale system. This illustrates that deployment choices are contextual: an organization can select different technologies for different functions, provided the interfaces and traffic paths are engineered deliberately.
How optical connections carry AI traffic
Electrical-to-optical conversion
Network equipment and adapters process electrical signals. An optical transceiver converts those signals to light for transmission through fiber and converts received light back to electrical form. A pluggable design uses separate modules at the two ends and a removable fiber assembly between them.
An active optical cable (AOC) integrates optical components into both cable ends. It can simplify a pre-terminated link, while a pluggable-transceiver design can offer more flexibility in replacing modules or selecting a fiber assembly. Neither format is automatically superior; the choice depends on reach, service procedures, bend and routing constraints, port compatibility, and the deployment’s maintenance model.
Why use optics?
NVIDIA’s cabling guidance identifies two common advantages over passive copper: longer potential reach and a smaller cable diameter. Smaller cables can ease airflow and high-density cable management. The trade-offs include higher cost, power required by the optical electronics, and additional physical interfaces when separate transceivers are used.

Reach is configuration-specific
Do not treat “fiber” as a distance rating. The module type, fiber mode, connector, data rate, and link construction all matter. NVIDIA’s HDR InfiniBand examples include a short-range optical module rated up to 100 meters and a single-mode example rated up to 2 kilometers. Those figures apply to the named module configurations, not to every InfiniBand generation or Ethernet optic.
NVIDIA’s structured-cabling guidance also gives maximum-reach assumptions for particular 400/800G Ethernet and InfiniBand configurations, including patch-panel and connector conditions. Before ordering, verify the exact switch and NIC ports, transceiver part numbers, fiber type (multimode or single-mode), connector and patch-panel arrangement, and the supported distance. A module that fits physically may still be electrically, optically, or firmware-incompatible.

The comparison should be made against the actual application and deployment, not a single headline latency or port-speed number. Workload communication patterns, topology, scale, operations, interoperability, and physical-link requirements can change the outcome.

- Map the traffic. Identify which GPUs exchange data, whether traffic is mostly east-west, how storage is reached, and which systems need north-south access.
- Define workload sensitivity. Record synchronization behavior, message sizes, burst patterns, and the effect of a delayed communication step on job utilization.
- Choose the fabric candidates. Evaluate an AI-oriented Ethernet/RoCE design and an InfiniBand design against the same topology and workload requirements. Do not assume either is the winner before this comparison.
- Check scale and topology. Confirm the number of servers, switch tiers, oversubscription assumptions, failure domains, and expansion path. Ensure every GPU that must communicate has a predictable path.
- Inventory compatible equipment. Match NICs or SuperNICs, switch ports, firmware, management software, and supported protocols. Vendor-specific capabilities must remain attributed to the product architecture that documents them.
- Engineer the physical links. For each hop, specify copper or optical, transceiver or AOC, multimode or single-mode fiber, connector, patch panels, bend and routing limits, and required reach.
- Budget power and operations. Include optical-module power, spares, cleaning and inspection procedures, firmware maintenance, monitoring, and staff training—not just switch and cable prices.
- Validate before expanding. Test representative distributed jobs and failure recovery on the intended topology. A port’s advertised rate is not the same as application throughput.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Calling fiber a networking protocol
Fiber is a medium. Saying that a data center “uses fiber instead of Ethernet” mixes layers. State the fabric first, then describe the link medium used for each connection.

Assuming ordinary Ethernet equals an AI Ethernet platform
RoCE requires compatible adapters, switches, software, and configuration. A conventional Ethernet network should not be represented as equivalent to NVIDIA’s Spectrum-X architecture.
Generalizing one reach number
The 100-meter and 2-kilometer HDR examples are tied to named module types. Recheck reach for the exact generation, data rate, fiber, connector, and patching design.
Comparing NVLink with a cluster fabric
NVLink operates at a different interconnect layer. Keep in-system GPU links separate from the Ethernet or InfiniBand network between servers.
Choosing from port speed alone
Topology, congestion behavior, adapter processing, software, workload synchronization, and failure handling determine useful performance. A larger number on a transceiver label does not settle the architecture.
What to verify in a deployment checklist
- Every server’s NIC or host channel adapter is supported by the selected switch and software versions.
- RoCE is explicitly supported and configured when Ethernet is expected to carry RDMA traffic.
- GPU-to-GPU paths, storage paths, and management paths are documented separately.
- Optical modules and AOCs match port type, speed, coding, connector, and firmware requirements.
- Reach calculations include the actual fiber mode, patch panels, connectors, and cross-connects.
- Optical power, spare modules, cleaning, inspection, and replacement procedures are included in operations planning.
- Expansion and failure scenarios have been tested, not inferred from a nominal link rate.
Bottom line
AI data-center networking is a coordinated system of fabrics, adapters, switches, software, topology, and physical links. Ethernet with RoCE can provide an AI-oriented Ethernet path when engineered with suitable components; InfiniBand offers a distinct RDMA-capable high-performance fabric. Optical fiber and active optical cables are link media that either fabric may use. Select among them by matching the workload and operating model to a verified end-to-end design, then validate the exact modules, reach, connectors, and equipment compatibility.
