For eligible Air Canada flights departing on or after January 1, 2026, Aeroplan’s base flight-points earning changed from a distance-based formula to 1 point per eligible Canadian-dollar-equivalent spent on base fare and carrier surcharges. Applicable taxes, fees and third-party charges do not count. The departure date, operating airline, ticket issuer and your Aeroplan status determine which rules apply to each flight segment.
What changed on January 1, 2026?
The effective date is the flight’s departure date, not the date you booked or paid. Eligible flights departing on or before December 31, 2025 use the former distance-and-fare approach; eligible flights departing on or after January 1, 2026 use the new eligible-spend rules. A ticket with flights on both sides of the changeover is assessed segment by segment. Air Canada announced the change on August 6, 2025.
The new calculation applies to eligible flights, not every purchase connected to travel. Air Canada’s current earning FAQ describes the eligible fare amount as base fare plus carrier surcharges. The base rate is 1 Aeroplan point per C$1-equivalent of that amount. Your status may increase the total through an eligible-flight multiplier.
Which charges earn Aeroplan points?
Eligible spend includes the base fare and carrier surcharges. Applicable taxes, fees and third-party charges are excluded. Air Canada’s examples specifically say that extra baggage fees and seat assignments do not earn points under this flight-points formula.

If you pay in another currency, Air Canada says it converts the amount to Canadian dollars using an industry-standard exchange rate. For a ticket with multiple flight segments, eligible fare spend is allocated proportionally according to flight distance for the segment calculation. The resulting award can therefore depend on more than the ticket’s total price or the distance of one leg.
Each passenger needs an Aeroplan number attached to the booking and qualifying profile information that matches the account. Award tickets and points-plus-cash bookings do not accumulate Aeroplan points under the FAQ. Check the live terms for your booking before relying on a calculation.
How your Aeroplan status changes the points total
Air Canada’s earning FAQ lists the following total Aeroplan points per eligible dollar by status at the time of travel. The 1x base rate is included in each total; the remainder is the Elite Points Multiplier portion.

These multipliers are not a universal bonus for any trip involving a partner airline. Air Canada says the multiplier applies to eligible Air Canada flights and eligible partner-operated Star Alliance flights ticketed by Air Canada with a ticket number beginning 014. Confirm that both the flight and ticket meet the applicable conditions in the earning FAQ.

Partner-flight earning depends on both the airline operating the flight and the airline that issued the ticket. Air Canada distinguishes these cases:
- Air Canada-operated flight: eligible flights use eligible spend under the 2026 rules.
- Partner-operated flight on an Air Canada-issued ticket: eligible flights ticketed by Air Canada, with a ticket number beginning 014, can use eligible spend under the stated rules.
- Partner-operated flight ticketed by another airline: earning generally remains distance-based, subject to partner rules and exceptions.
Before comparing itineraries, check the operating carrier, the ticket number and the partner’s eligible booking classes. A partner name in the itinerary alone does not tell you which earning method applies. Air Canada’s 2025 and partner earning page also sets out the prior distance-based framework and partner context; consult current terms for the particular carrier and ticket.

Air Canada Vacations packages have separate fixed-point rules. Do not apply the ordinary per-dollar flight formula to the package price; check the package terms for flight points and whether an eligible Elite multiplier applies.
How redeemable points differ from Status Qualifying Credits
Redeemable Aeroplan points are the currency members can use for rewards. Status Qualifying Credits (SQC) are used to qualify for Aeroplan Elite status. The two have separate earning rules, so a figure for SQC is not a figure for redeemable points.
In its August 6, 2025 announcement, Air Canada described SQC as the single path to Elite status starting January 1, 2026. The announcement cited up to 4 SQC per eligible fare dollar, up to 25,000 SQC through eligible Aeroplan credit-card spend, and an additional 25,000 through eligible partner activity. Those are the announcement’s summary amounts, not a complete statement of every current qualification condition; check Air Canada’s current program terms for the activity, fare and limits that apply.

The tray table cover adds built-in storage so everyday flight essentials stay close instead of scattered between your lap, carry-on and seat area. Designed for adult travelers who want a simple way to keep their setup orderly from takeoff through landing.
- KEEP ESSENTIALS WITHIN REACH — Zippered mesh storage pockets provide visible space for personal items such as your phone, passport, e-reader, headphones, cleaning wipes and snacks. - MADE FOR MORE THAN FLIGHTS — Use the travel tray cover on standard airplane tray tables and take it along for train or bus travel with compatible tray tables. The flexible setup creates a convenient surface for a meal, book, tablet or compact work essentials, giving frequent travelers one organizer that can move between different parts of a trip without adding a rigid case.
- LOW-PROFILE PREMIUM BLACK — The solid Premium Black design gives this tray table organizer an understated look suited to adult travel, commuting and work trips. Stretch polyester and reinforced stitching are designed to fit standard airplane tray tables, while the rectangular cover keeps useful storage integrated into the space directly in front of your seat.
- PACKABLE AND MACHINE WASHABLE — When the trip is over, roll the foldable tray table cover up, secure it and place it in your luggage for the next leg. The polyester cover is machine washable for straightforward care; remove the carabiner, wash on a delicate setting and air dry. The included carabiner can also keep keys or other quick-access travel items close at hand.
The same announcement said the 2025 qualification system would remain unchanged for the rest of 2025, including qualification for 2026 status. That status-qualification transition is separate from the change in how eligible 2026 flights earn redeemable points.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to compare two flight options
A lower ticket price or shorter distance does not, on its own, show which option earns more. Compare the same member’s status and work through the relevant factors for each itinerary:
- Use each segment’s departure date to identify whether the former or 2026 rule applies.
- Identify the operating airline and ticket issuer. For Air Canada-issued tickets, check whether the ticket number begins 014.
- Confirm that the flight and, where relevant, the partner booking class are eligible.
- For eligible-spend segments, identify base fare plus carrier surcharges, excluding taxes, fees and third-party charges.
- Apply the status multiplier that is eligible for that flight and ticket.
- Check separately for award or points-plus-cash bookings, package rules, and partner exceptions.
The result is itinerary-specific. Air Canada’s published rules do not establish a typical member’s gain or loss from the change; an accurate comparison needs the eligible fare, route, departure dates, status, carrier and ticketing details.

Other eligible ways to earn
The 2026 flight formula is only one way Aeroplan members may earn points. For example, Air Canada and World of Hyatt announced on July 15, 2026 that members can choose 500 Aeroplan points per eligible stay at participating Hyatt properties instead of World of Hyatt points. Linked-account and Aeroplan-card conditions vary by card type and country; see the partnership announcement for its terms.
Eligible Aeroplan credit-card purchases can also earn points, and eligible card spend may contribute to SQC under applicable rules. Card products and terms differ by country and issuer. For instance, Chase’s September 10, 2026 announcement concerns a US-issued card; its terms should not be applied to Canadian cards.
When a booking change affects points
Air Canada says that if you voluntarily exchange a flight, points are based on the new flight and its fare. If the airline makes an involuntary change, points are based on the original booking. Because these cases can turn on the specific change and current terms, confirm how Air Canada will treat your booking if an exchange affects a segment or fare.
