A Polymarket trader reportedly made about $404,000 in profit on a position predicting Nicolás Maduro would be out of office by January 31, 2026. That is often described as a bet on Maduro’s capture, but the contract covered several ways he could leave office—not capture alone. Authorities later arrested and indicted a U.S. soldier in connection with the trades; the charges are allegations, and the sources reviewed do not establish a conviction.
What the Polymarket contract actually asked
The largest reported position was on whether Maduro would be out of office by January 31, 2026. A February 2026 letter from U.S. senators to the Commodity Futures Trading Commission described the contract as resolving “YES” if Maduro resigned, was detained, otherwise lost his position, or was prevented from performing his duties as Venezuela’s president within the market timeframe. In other words, the contract was broader than whether he would be captured.
The senators’ letter said the contract traded at 8 cents and resolved roughly 12 hours after the U.S. strike. The letter was a request for regulatory clarification, not a CFTC ruling or finding about the contract. Read the senators’ letter to the CFTC.
How much the trader reportedly made
The totals differ because reports describe figures at different levels of precision and scope:

The amounts should not be treated as directly interchangeable: ABC attributed more precise account and position figures to Polymarket, while Reuters gave rounded totals. How a yes-or-no event contract can produce a large return
AP explains that event contracts are commonly framed as yes-or-no propositions, with prices moving between $0 and $1 as traders buy and sell based on their changing assessments. A trader can also sell or cash out before the contract resolves. A quoted market price therefore reflects what participants are willing to pay; it is not a guaranteed or objective probability of an event.

In this case, the senators’ letter said the Maduro-out contract was priced at 8 cents. That figure is the price reported in the letter, not a universal measure of the trader’s cost basis or a promise that a buyer would receive a particular return. Who was behind the bet—and what authorities alleged
January reporting described the trader as anonymous. In April, ABC News reported that authorities had arrested and indicted Gannon Ken Van Dyke, a special operations soldier involved in the operation. The reported charges included unlawful use of confidential information for personal gain, theft of nonpublic government information, commodities fraud, and wire fraud.

Those are allegations, not a finding of guilt. ABC quoted prosecutors’ indictment as alleging that Van Dyke used classified information to trade for personal profit. The reporting reviewed here does not establish a conviction or final court outcome.
Polymarket’s spokesperson told ABC: “Insider trading has no place on Polymarket. Today’s arrest is proof the system works.” That is the company’s statement, not an independent determination that the trades were unlawful.

Was the timing evidence of insider trading?
AP reported that many of the account’s bets were placed shortly before the U.S. operation that led to Maduro’s capture, prompting scrutiny. AP also noted the counterargument that speculation about Maduro’s future had circulated earlier and could have motivated trades. Timing can raise questions, but timing alone does not prove what a trader knew or how the information was obtained.
The later arrest and indictment put the matter in a different procedural posture: authorities made specific allegations and filed charges. Whether those allegations are proven is a question for the legal process. The senators’ letter separately raised questions for the CFTC about event contracts; the sources reviewed do not establish a CFTC decision on this particular market.

Why the early and later reports use different descriptions
The coverage changed as more information became public. Early January accounts discussed an anonymous account and suspiciously timed trades. ABC’s April report named Van Dyke and described the charges, while attributing account-level figures to Polymarket. The senators’ February letter describes the contract terms and asks the CFTC to clarify its approach. These are different kinds of evidence: news reporting, a congressional request, and allegations in an indictment are not the same as a regulator’s ruling or a court’s verdict.
