Yes, a part-time job can increase your Social Security retirement benefit—but only if its covered earnings improve the earnings record SSA uses to calculate your benefit. The Social Security Administration (SSA) uses your highest 35 years of earnings, counting years without earnings as zero when you have fewer than 35. Working can also affect payments before full retirement age through a separate earnings test, so a higher benefit from new earnings and a temporary withholding are two different things.
How additional earnings can raise your benefit
SSA calculates retirement benefits using two key factors: your earnings history and the age you start receiving benefits. Its retirement planner says, “We base your retirement benefit on your highest 35 years of earnings and the age you start receiving benefits.” The 35-year rule means the question is not simply whether you worked or how many hours you worked; it is whether the earnings from the new work improve the set of years used in your calculation. If you have fewer than 35 earnings years
Years without earnings count as zero when SSA selects the 35 years for the calculation. If you have fewer than 35 years with earnings, a year of covered part-time work could take the place of a zero year. That may improve your earnings record, though the eventual monthly increase depends on the record and is not guaranteed to be a particular amount.
If you already have 35 or more earnings years
A new year can still help if its earnings are high enough to replace one of the lower-earning years included in the calculation. If the new year does not displace a lower year, it will not improve the record used for the benefit calculation. A part-time job therefore does not automatically raise benefits, and the number of hours worked alone cannot predict the result.

When the increase may appear
SSA reviews the earnings records of people receiving benefits who continue to work. If additional earnings qualify for a higher calculation, SSA says the increase is retroactive to January following the year the earnings were made. For example, qualifying earnings made in 2026 would be considered for an increase retroactive to January 2027. The agency’s FAQ describes its process this way: “Each year we review your record to see if the additional earnings you had will increase your monthly benefit.” SSA FAQ: Will my monthly Social Security retirement benefit increase if I have additional earnings?
The 2026 earnings-test limits discussed below are not estimates of a benefit increase. SSA’s reviewed guidance does not give a typical dollar increase for part-time work: an estimate requires your earnings record and claiming details.
How work can temporarily reduce payments before full retirement age
The earnings test is separate from the calculation based on your highest 35 years. If you receive retirement benefits before full retirement age and earn above the applicable annual limit, SSA may withhold some benefits. This can reduce or suspend payments for a time; it does not mean that the earnings themselves have permanently lowered the benefit calculation. The limits below are the SSA amounts for 2026, and they change over time. SSA FAQ: What happens if I work and get Social Security retirement benefits?

| Situation in 2026 | Annual earnings limit | How SSA applies the earnings test |
|---|---|---|
| Under full retirement age for the whole year | $24,480 | $1 in benefits is deducted for every $2 of earnings above the limit. |
| Reaching full retirement age during 2026 | $65,160 for earnings before the month you reach full retirement age | $1 in benefits is deducted for every $3 above the limit. The limit applies to earnings before the month full retirement age is reached. |
| From the month you reach full retirement age onward | No earnings-test limit applies | Earnings no longer reduce benefits under the earnings test. |
These are SSA’s domestic earnings-test amounts, not an income ceiling for receiving retirement benefits in general. They also do not tell you how much an extra work year may add to your monthly calculation. SSA: Exempt Amounts Under the Earnings Test
A simple withholding example
Suppose a beneficiary under full retirement age for all of 2026 has $26,480 in earnings counted by SSA. That is $2,000 over the $24,480 limit; at $1 withheld for every $2 over, the earnings test would result in $1,000 in benefits withheld. This arithmetic illustrates the rule, not a prediction of the exact timing of a person’s payments. SSA determines how much to withhold based on the beneficiary’s situation.
Which income counts toward the test
SSA counts wages, including bonuses, commissions and vacation pay, as well as net earnings from self-employment. It does not count pensions, annuities, investment income, interest, veterans benefits, or other government or military retirement benefits for this earnings test. The distinction matters when estimating whether your work income will cross the limit: total household income is not the same as earnings counted under this rule. If you start benefits partway through a year
SSA has a special monthly earnings-test rule that can allow a full benefit for whole months in the first year, even when total annual earnings would otherwise lead to withholding. For 2026, the monthly amount is $2,040 for someone under full retirement age throughout the year, and $5,430 for someone reaching full retirement age during 2026. These are monthly figures for the special first-year rule; they are not replacements for the annual limits that apply in later years. SSA: Special Earnings Limit Rule
The rule can be useful when you stop or reduce work and begin benefits during the year: annual earnings accumulated before claiming may be high, even if your earnings in later months are low. Whether a particular month qualifies depends on SSA’s rule and the earnings in that month. A self-employed person must also meet the rule concerning substantial services in self-employment. Do not assume that dividing an annual limit by 12 gives the special monthly amount; use the monthly figure and conditions SSA provides.
What happens to months when benefits are withheld
Withholding under the earnings test is not the same as a permanently lost month of retirement benefits. At full retirement age, SSA recalculates the benefit to account for months in which benefits were reduced or withheld because of excess earnings. This adjustment is distinct from a possible increase because a new earnings year replaced a lower year in the 35-year calculation: one concerns the effect of withheld months, the other concerns the earnings record. That distinction helps explain why working before full retirement age can produce more than one effect at once. New covered earnings might improve the underlying calculation; meanwhile, earnings above the test limit might temporarily reduce current checks. The later adjustment for withheld months addresses the earnings test, while any qualifying recalculation addresses the earnings history.

Working does not erase the effect of when you claim. Starting retirement benefits before full retirement age reduces the monthly benefit; delaying after full retirement age can earn delayed retirement credits through age 70. These claiming-age effects are separate from whether a part-time earnings year replaces a zero or lower year. SSA: You Can Receive Benefits Before Your Full Retirement Age

A practical way to assess your own situation
- Check your earnings record. Identify how many years with earnings you have and whether you have years with no earnings or relatively low earnings among the 35 used for the calculation.
- Estimate whether the new year could improve the record. Compare expected covered earnings from the job with your lower earnings years. If you have fewer than 35 earnings years, a new year may replace a zero; otherwise, it must be strong enough to displace a lower year.
- Separate the earnings-test question. If you already receive benefits and are below full retirement age, compare wages and net self-employment earnings—not all income—with the 2026 annual or first-year monthly rule that applies to you.
- Consider claiming timing separately. Compare the effect of starting before full retirement age, claiming at that age, or delaying (up to age 70) with the possible effect of adding an earnings year.
- Allow for SSA’s review. SSA reviews working beneficiaries’ records annually; a qualifying increase is retroactive to January after the year the earnings were made. A precise personal estimate requires your record and circumstances.
SSA’s benefit-computation materials describe the role of earnings in the calculation; the agency’s planner and FAQs provide the working-beneficiary rules and current limits. SSA Annual Statistical Supplement, 2024, Appendix C
Limits for people working outside the United States
The 2026 dollar thresholds in this article describe SSA’s domestic earnings-test rules. SSA explains that different rules can apply to people working outside the United States; do not apply these U.S. thresholds to work abroad without checking the agency’s international guidance. The cited domestic pages do not establish a universal rule for every overseas work situation.
What a part-time job can—and cannot—tell you
A job can improve a retirement benefit if its covered earnings produce a better earnings record, and SSA reviews eligible working beneficiaries’ records for a recalculation. But hours, job title, and wages by themselves do not establish a monthly increase. The result depends on how the new year compares with the earnings years already counted and, separately, on claiming age and any earnings-test withholding. No fixed increase can be promised without an individual record.
