The account traces a gradual expansion while Spoor was in college—not an inheritance or a guaranteed formula for growing a farm.
How Spoor got his start
Emma Henning’s December 9, 2020, Successful Farming profile describes Spoor as a first-generation farmer near Martinsburg, Missouri. The last person in his family to farm had died in 1977; his father worked in town, and his mother was a nurse. As a high-school student, Spoor worked for local farmers and said he learned from them.
At 18, while starting college, he took a chance on cash-renting six acres for soybeans. He said the farm income helped pay for University of Missouri classes and a down payment on his first tractor, an International 1066. The profile does not detail the lease terms, operating expenses, full financing, or how Spoor secured each later parcel, so it cannot establish how much capital the expansion required.
How the acreage grew during college
Spoor continued adding land over the next four years, according to the profile. By 2020, the reported operation covered 600 acres of corn and soybeans. Those numbers refer to the farm as described in 2020; the profile does not establish its present acreage or business status.

The story is a case study in building a farm while completing an education. It is not a measured comparison between farming and taking an off-farm job, nor evidence that a similar timeline is typical for beginning farmers. Spoor himself had initially expected farming to be difficult to expand. He said he went to college because he thought it would be hard to grow a farm, and expected to earn an agricultural degree and work for a large agricultural company rather than farm full time.
Why he added popcorn
In 2018, Spoor planted 15 acres of popcorn as a trial alongside his corn-and-soybean operation. He characterized the first season as a learning curve, even though the harvest was bountiful in challenging weather. By 2020, the profile said he was growing just over 40 acres of popcorn. That progression shows diversification within this particular farm, not a general recommendation that popcorn is a more profitable or lower-risk crop.

How he sold the crop
Spoor told Henning that he direct-marketed popcorn through 14 local grocery stores and sold it through the Spoor Farms website to customers across all 50 states. These are figures he reported in 2020, not verified current distribution or sales numbers. The profile said the pandemic brought mixed effects: grocery sales increased as more people ate popcorn at home, while reaching new movie-theater customers became difficult.
The account also said Spoor finished his education in May 2020, had picked up a seed dealership, and hoped to focus more time on the farm and grow its size and profitability. It does not say whether the dealership or those plans continued.

What the story can—and cannot—tell a beginning farmer
Spoor’s reported path combined access to rented land, work experience with local farmers, college, an early crop income stream, and later a differentiated crop with direct-sales outlets. The profile offers useful context about how one farmer developed an operation, but it is not a financial plan or proof that the same steps will produce the same result for someone else.
- Land: Spoor began with cash-rented acreage rather than an inherited farm, but the profile gives no rent amounts or later lease details.
- Cash flow: The initial crop income helped with education costs and a tractor down payment, but no complete budget, debt picture, or profitability figures are reported.
- Expansion: Acreage accumulated over several years while Spoor was in college; the profile does not explain the financing and risk behind each addition.
- Diversification and sales: Popcorn created a separate crop and direct-marketing effort, but the article does not report margins, costs, or whether those channels remain active.
Because the original account is from 2020 and the figures describe one individual operation, they should be read as a historical example—not a current farm update or a typical growth benchmark.
