In a May 16, 2006 report, InfoWorld described Beijing Bamboo Technology Co.’s plan to help Chinese consumers make better-informed choices through independent, category-specific review websites. Its first site, 6xue.info, drew on information from 14,000 surveys, while a second site for home-decoration products was in development. The report documents the company’s plans at the time—not whether they succeeded or whether the sites still operate.

What Beijing Bamboo Technology planned

Beijing Bamboo Technology Co., founded by American entrepreneurs Anne Stevenson-Yang and Tom Melcher, planned a network of websites offering peer and expert reviews and ratings for particular categories of goods and services. The idea was to make objective consumer information easier to find and bring greater transparency to transactions.

Stevenson-Yang, identified in the report as the company’s president, put the aim this way: “It’s a way to try to bring more transparency to consumer transactions in China.” The report characterized online and print information as potentially unreliable or misleading, including when companies paid for favorable coverage or negative stories about competitors. That was the 2006 article’s description; it does not establish how widespread those practices were or describe conditions today. InfoWorld’s May 16, 2006 report

What the first website offered

6xue.info and its survey material

InfoWorld reported that 6xue.info launched on Tuesday, May 16, 2006. The site focused on study-abroad information and included material drawn from 14,000 surveys of Chinese students studying abroad, graduates of overseas universities, and graduates of test-preparation schools in China. The figure is the number reported by the article; it is not an independently verified or current dataset.

The name was chosen because it sounded like “study abroad” when read in Chinese. The site used XOOPS as its content-management system. Jiang Taiwen, whom the report identified as XOOPS’s chief designer and webmaster of the Chinese XOOPS group, was the site’s technical architect and chief programmer. InfoWorld’s report on 6xue.info

Planned expansion into home decoration

The company was also working on ChinaDeco.info, a proposed site focused on home-decoration products. Stevenson-Yang discussed possible expansion beyond websites into print, television, and conferences. The article reported these as plans; it does not confirm that ChinaDeco.info or those other projects later launched.

How the company said it would fund the sites

The reported revenue model was advertising. Stevenson-Yang said Beijing Bamboo would not accept ads from businesses selling the same type of product covered by a given site—a proposed safeguard intended to separate the subject of reviews from advertisers in that category. The 2006 report does not establish whether the restriction was implemented, how it was enforced, or whether the company later had other revenue sources. InfoWorld’s account of the advertising plan

What the report does—and does not—show

The article offers a snapshot of an early consumer-information venture: a category-based review model, a first website drawing on survey responses, and an intended advertising boundary. It provides no comparative performance results or measures of whether users made better decisions. Nor does it establish the present-day status of Beijing Bamboo Technology, 6xue.info, or ChinaDeco.info. The defensible conclusion is about the company’s stated ambition in 2006, not its subsequent impact.
