Honda’s Reusable Rocket Test: What It Proved—and What It Didn’t

Honda’s 2025 rocket test demonstrated a controlled launch and landing at low altitude—not an orbital launch capability or parity with SpaceX.

Honda successfully launched and landed an experimental rocket in a 56.6-second test, reaching 271.4 meters and touching down within 37 centimeters of its target. It was a meaningful step toward reusable rockets, but not an orbital launch: the 6.3-meter demonstrator did not show that Honda can carry satellites to space or match SpaceX’s operational launch systems.

What happened in Honda’s rocket test?

Honda R&D Co., Ltd., Honda Motor Co., Ltd.’s research and development subsidiary, conducted the test on June 17, 2025, in Taiki, Hokkaido, Japan. Honda described it as its first rocket landing after reaching nearly 300 meters. The company reported a maximum altitude of 271.4 meters, a flight time of 56.6 seconds, and a landing point within 37 centimeters of the target. Honda’s announcement gives those measurements; the Japanese Cabinet Office’s award document also records them, but does not provide a separate independent flight measurement. The Cabinet Office calls it Japan’s first successful launch-and-landing test of an experimental rocket conducted by a private company.

The test vehicle

Specification Honda-reported figure
Length 6.3 meters
Diameter 85 centimeters
Dry mass 900 kilograms
Wet mass 1,312 kilograms
Maximum altitude 271.4 meters
Flight duration 56.6 seconds
Landing-point deviation from target Within 37 centimeters

These figures describe Honda’s experimental vehicle and this single reported test, not an orbital rocket or a recurring commercial service.

Did Honda really launch and land a reusable rocket?

Yes, in the limited sense that Honda demonstrated a rocket launch and controlled landing as part of research into reusability. The company said the test was designed to examine stability during ascent and descent, landing capability, and flight-data collection. The result demonstrates intended launch-and-landing behavior at low altitude; it does not establish that the vehicle has completed repeated flights or that Honda has an operational reusable launch system.

How does Honda’s test compare with SpaceX?

The phrase “move over SpaceX” overstates what the Honda test showed. Honda’s vehicle made a brief experimental hop to 271.4 meters. Honda’s stated longer-term aim is a reusable vehicle able to transport satellites and other payloads into space. SpaceX, by contrast, describes a rocket recovery and reusability program on its official reusability page. The available figures establish a difference in demonstrated altitude, mission, and operational maturity; they do not support saying Honda has caught up, is competing for orbital payload contracts, or has demonstrated an orbital-capable system.

Why include a turbopump in a low-altitude demonstrator?

Honda’s engineers say they drew on combustion and airframe-control expertise developed through automotive, HondaJet, and Formula 1 work. In an interview published by Honda on September 30, 2025, chief engineer Kenichiro Ikeya said the demonstrator used a turbopump to deliver methane and oxygen to the engine’s combustor. Ikeya explained that the test altitude could have been reached without one, but Honda included it because a turbopump would eventually be necessary for the company’s goal of delivering satellites into space. The interview is Honda’s account of its engineering choices.

What is Honda trying to build next?

Honda says it began space research in 2019 and is working across three areas: a circulative renewable-energy system, space robotics, and sustainable rockets. Its stated rocket ambition is a reusable vehicle powered by renewable fuel to transport satellites and other payloads. That is a longer-term goal, not a description of the June 2025 flight: the cited company materials do not establish that the demonstrator used renewable fuel.

Honda engineer Junichiro Ishimura, chief engineer and sustainable rocket project manager, said the company believes it should pursue sustainable reusability rather than discard rockets after each use, even when the technical hurdles are high. That is Honda’s stated perspective on its research direction, not an independent assessment of the project’s prospects.
