Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →HMD Global reportedly paused direct U.S. sales of Nokia- and HMD-branded devices in July 2025. As of August 18, 2026, the former U.S. shopping site redirects to HMD’s international website, while U.S.-specific warranty, repair and customer-support resources remain available.
That makes “effective retreat” more accurate than “permanent exit.” HMD has reduced its normal U.S. sales presence, but the available evidence does not prove that it has abandoned American customers or ruled out a return.
What HMD stopped doing in the United States
On July 12, 2025, Gizmochina reported that HMD had scaled back its U.S. operations, taken its U.S. web store offline and paused direct sales of both Nokia-branded and HMD-branded devices.
The report supports a halt to HMD’s normal direct-sales operation. It does not establish that every independent retailer, carrier or marketplace seller immediately stopped offering remaining inventory. Phones already in the retail channel could still have been available after HMD’s own storefront closed.
#1 Best Overall
- Product is exclusively compatible with GSM carriers. In the US this product is confirmed to work with T-Mobile, Boost, Metro, Mint, H2O Wireless and other carriers using the T-Mobile network. Please confirm compatibility with your network service provider. Carrier network coverage is dependent upon the carrier's service area. Product is not compatible with AT&T, Verizon or their subsidiaries. Product requires a nano SIM card size.
- Fast, efficient processing power and a three day long battery to take you through the weekend.
- 50MP dual camera with advanced AI imaging.
- 6.52" teardrop display with a 90Hz refresh rate for a smoother and more fluid screen scrolling and video playback experience.
- 2 years of Android OS and security upgrades.
The report also does not establish that every accessory, tablet or legacy product disappeared simultaneously. The safest description is that HMD paused direct U.S. device sales, with the move affecting its Nokia phone business and its own HMD-branded hardware.
Current U.S. status
As of August 18, 2026, HMD’s former U.S. URL redirects to its international site rather than a dedicated U.S. shopping storefront. The international site continues to show HMD and Nokia products, but HMD says availability varies by location.
This distinction matters:
- Direct sales: HMD no longer appears to operate the U.S. online store as a normal domestic sales channel.
- Retail inventory: Independent sellers may still have new, used or refurbished units.
- Imported models: International versions may be sold to U.S. buyers, but their carrier compatibility and warranty coverage can differ.
- Support: HMD continues to maintain U.S.-specific support and general service resources.
Therefore, “Nokia and HMD phones are no longer available anywhere in America” is broader than the evidence supports.
Why did HMD pull back?
According to the July 2025 report, HMD cited a “challenging geopolitical and economic environment.” That is the company’s broad explanation, not a detailed public breakdown of costs, revenue or strategy.
Industry observers connected the timing with the cost and uncertainty of importing and selling devices in the United States, including possible tariff and trade-policy pressure. However, the available evidence does not prove that tariffs alone caused the decision. HMD has not publicly identified one definitive financial or operational cause in the material available here.
Is HMD permanently leaving the U.S.?
There is no confirmed evidence that HMD has permanently exited the American market.
The case for a substantial retreat is strong: the U.S. store is no longer presented as a normal local storefront, direct device sales were reported as paused, and HMD’s current public presence is international rather than U.S.-focused. But a redirected website is evidence of storefront status, not a formal legal declaration that a company will never return.

Several facts point the other way. HMD still provides U.S.-specific customer assistance, continues to host warranty and repair resources, supports software information for existing devices and remains active in other regions. Its newsroom continues to list global and regional product activity in 2026.

What happened to Nokia phones?
HMD Global makes Nokia-branded phones under license; Nokia Corporation itself is not the direct seller of these handsets. HMD also produces devices under its own HMD brand. HMD’s U.S. retreat therefore affects both brands’ phone availability without meaning that Nokia has abandoned its other businesses, such as networking and software.
The U.S. smartphone presence was already limited. The 2025 report said four HMD-branded smartphones had launched in the country and identified the HMD Fusion, released in September 2024, as the last HMD-branded smartphone launch there. It also described later U.S. Nokia offerings as largely feature phones. Those figures come from secondary reporting rather than audited company data.
What current Nokia and HMD owners should know
Warranty and customer service
Existing ownership is different from new-product availability. HMD’s U.S.-specific support page continues to provide product information and warranty assistance, along with chat, email and callback support. The page lists the U.S. callback number +1 (833) 766-5420 and says callback support is available Monday through Friday during business hours, with voicemail instructions.
HMD’s general support center also provides warranty, repair, user-guide and software-support resources for HMD- and Nokia-branded devices manufactured by HMD.
Repairs and replacement parts
A sales retreat does not automatically cancel warranty obligations or make every repair unavailable. However, parts and authorized repair access can become more difficult if U.S. inventory and service networks shrink. Even a repairable phone is only practically repairable when the required parts and service channels remain accessible.

Software updates
HMD continues to host software-update and support information. Check the exact model and regional variant rather than assuming that an international version receives the same update treatment as a U.S. model.
If your phone fails
- Record the exact model number, IMEI and purchase date.
- Check HMD’s support center and U.S.-specific support page.
- Confirm whether the device is still covered by warranty.
- Ask whether the proposed repair uses an authorized U.S. service channel.
- Do not send the phone to an unfamiliar overseas repair address without confirming responsibility for shipping, data protection and return costs.
Can Americans still buy HMD or Nokia phones?
Possibly, but the financial and technical risk is higher than when HMD operated a normal U.S. storefront.

Remaining retailer stock
Retailers and marketplace sellers may still hold inventory. A listing does not by itself prove that the product is authorized for U.S. sale. Before paying, verify the exact regional model, condition, seller identity, warranty provider and return period.
Imported models
An international phone may support some U.S. frequencies while still failing carrier activation or important network functions. Check all of the following with the intended carrier:
- LTE and 5G band support
- VoLTE compatibility
- Carrier certification and activation eligibility
- Emergency-calling requirements
- eSIM support, if needed
- Compatibility after legacy network shutdowns
Frequency support alone is not a guarantee that a carrier will activate the phone.
Used and refurbished devices
Scarcity can push prices above a phone’s practical value. Used buyers should check battery health, update eligibility, repair history, IMEI status and return rights. An older device may be a poor bargain even if its purchase price looks attractive.
Also confirm that the warranty applies in the United States. A manufacturer warranty for another region may not provide domestic service.

What HMD is focusing on globally
HMD’s current international materials emphasize affordable Android phones, feature phones, family and child-focused devices, repairability and sustainability, as well as secure devices for business and government customers. Its company overview describes HMD as a maker of Nokia phones and reports that it has sold more than 450 million devices worldwide; that sales figure is a company-reported claim.
The company’s continuing international activity shows that HMD has not shut down globally. It is a change in U.S. distribution and market emphasis, not evidence that the company has stopped making phones everywhere.
What this means for your budget
For current owners, the immediate financial choice is usually whether to seek support or replace the phone. Contact HMD before buying a replacement if the device may still be covered by warranty or repair service.

For prospective buyers, a discounted imported or old-stock phone may not be a bargain after accounting for:
- Possible shipping and restocking costs
- Limited or foreign warranty coverage
- Carrier incompatibility
- Battery aging during storage
- Hard-to-find replacement parts
- Lower resale value
Buyers who need predictable U.S. carrier activation, domestic service and a clear return process should favor a phone sold through an established U.S. manufacturer or authorized retailer. HMD’s retreat makes those safeguards more important, not less.
The bottom line on HMD’s U.S. retreat
HMD reportedly paused direct U.S. sales of Nokia- and HMD-branded devices in July 2025, and its former U.S. store still redirects to an international site as of August 18, 2026. That is a meaningful withdrawal from normal U.S. retail operations.
But HMD continues to support existing U.S. customers through warranty, repair, software and customer-service channels. Third-party inventory may also remain. The evidence supports calling this an effective or indefinite retreat—not a confirmed permanent corporate exit from the United States.
