The startup’s original pitch was a desktop AI assistant that could use a user’s screen, documents, voice notes and call audio as context instead of relying only on a blank chat window.
That launch description is not the whole current story. Highlight’s website now presents the company as a team-coordination and shared-intelligence platform, displays a waitlist, and says the company has raised $40 million in Series A funding. That later funding figure is a company-reported claim, and the available public material does not provide the round’s date, terms or lead investor.

What happened to Highlight?
Highlight began as a research project inside Medal, a company best known for capturing and sharing video-game clips. Medal explored how large language models could understand what was happening on a user’s screen. The project eventually became a separate company, announced on October 22, 2024.
The separation was partly an organizational and recruiting decision. According to TechCrunch’s report, Highlight needed a dedicated team and wanted to offer employees equity in a standalone business.

“Spins out” does not mean Medal disappeared, was acquired or transferred its entire operation. Medal remained the company from which Highlight originated, while Highlight became a distinct entity with its own product direction and financing.
Who funded the $10 million round?
The reported $10 million Highlight financing was led by General Catalyst. The other named participants were Valor, SV Angel, Conviction Embed and Medal.
Medal contributed $3 million. That money came from Medal’s separate $13 million financing announced in July 2024. The figures should not be combined casually: $10 million refers to Highlight’s spinout financing, while $13 million refers to Medal’s separate fundraising.
The personnel connection between the companies was also substantial. Pim de Witte linked the two businesses, Medal co-founder Josh Lipson joined Highlight, and the team included Haris Butt, formerly ClickUp’s vice president of design, and Mark Bond, Medal’s first head of growth.
How the original Highlight app worked
Highlight was designed around attaching context to an AI request. Rather than manually copying text into a chatbot, a user could provide material already present in the desktop workflow, including:
- Content visible on the screen
- A voice note
- A document
- System audio from a call
The assistant could then answer questions or perform familiar language-model tasks such as summarizing, rewriting, highlighting and explaining.
For example, a user might ask Highlight to explain a technical passage visible in a browser, summarize part of a meeting, or analyze a document without manually gathering every relevant excerpt first. The central idea was that the desktop itself could serve as the assistant’s context window.

Features announced with the spinout
The announcement described a push-to-talk shortcut and a new Conversations application for recording meetings. Highlight also promoted prompt-driven custom actions—for example, an instruction to summarize the first 10 minutes of a meeting.
The company discussed plans for a community where users could share prompts and automations. It also described a future developer-facing agentic framework that could handle background tasks, such as summarizing documents placed in a folder.

- Audible Notifications - be informed of system alerts and events with your selected sounds/tones as well as text-to-speech messages like “the garage door is still open!”
- 100-in-1 Audible Device! Customizable tones/sounds and custom spoken text-to-speech messages means your SpeakerHub can act as a driveway alert, security siren, water leak alarm, door chime and you’ve-got-mail announcer!
- Smart Design – SpeakerHub is powerful yet compact and portable. Handsome and measuring less than 3 inches across, it will look great anywhere in your home. Simply connect it to WiFi (only), and USB power (with the included AC adapter)
- Private & Secure – SpeakerHub is smart, but it does not have a microphone and can not listen. Be secure in your privacy and safely place this smart speaker anywhere in your home or business
- Requirements – Android or Apple smartphone, stable WiFi connection (SpeakerHub does not have an Ethernet port), and USB power or an AC outlet nearby for the plug-in power adapter
Those details need a time qualifier. The 2024 coverage mixed capabilities described as available with new directions and future plans. The announcement did not establish that every proposed automation was fully deployed, reliable or broadly available.
Why the product idea mattered
Most chat-based AI tools require users to create a prompt and supply the necessary information through pasted text or uploaded files. Highlight’s approach aimed to reduce that preparation. If the assistant already understood the active screen or meeting context, a shorter request could potentially be enough.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

The concept sits between several established product types, including general-purpose chat assistants, meeting transcription tools, desktop agents, workflow automation platforms and enterprise knowledge systems.
The important distinction was not simply that Highlight used AI. It was that the product proposed making the user’s ongoing work context—the screen, conversation, documents and connected applications—part of the interface.
The unresolved trade-offs
Privacy and data handling
An assistant that can use screen content or system audio may encounter passwords, financial information, private messages, confidential business documents and customer data. The 2024 announcement did not establish whether processing was local or cloud-based, what information was retained, how long recordings or transcripts were stored, whether users could exclude applications, or what enterprise controls existed.
It is therefore not accurate to describe the original product as privacy-preserving or compliant with a particular regulation without separate technical or policy documentation.
Meeting consent and transcript quality
Recording system audio creates practical and legal questions. Participants may need to be notified, depending on the circumstances and jurisdiction. Accuracy can also vary with accents, overlapping speech, poor audio and speaker identification.
The available announcement does not verify Highlight’s consent workflow, transcript accuracy, correction tools or retention policy. “Could record and summarize meetings” is a more precise description than implying universal support or guaranteed results.
Automation and reliability
An assistant that drafts a summary is different from an agent that changes a document, sends a message or updates a project-management system. Background agents can act on stale information, make incorrect edits, duplicate work or apply permissions too broadly. Any such system needs clear approvals, audit trails and ways to undo changes.

Pricing and operating costs
Highlight was described as free to use at launch, with planned pricing based on the amount of text—or word count—the service processed. The announcement does not prove that this pricing model was ultimately implemented, and Highlight’s current website does not show a public price list in the available material.

Highlight’s current public positioning is broader and more workplace-oriented than the original desktop-assistant description. Its official homepage emphasizes team memory, commitments, decisions, drafted next steps, reminders and actions across connected work tools.
The site gives examples involving Google Calendar, GitHub, Notion, Gmail and Slack. It describes workflows such as drafting Linear tickets, Slack summaries and Notion decision logs after sprint-planning discussions; answering questions about earlier team decisions; tracking follow-up commitments; and helping recruiters and managers retain information from candidate conversations.
These are descriptions of the company’s current product positioning, not independently verified performance results. The homepage also displays a “Join the waitlist” call to action, so current open availability should not be assumed.
Highlight’s About page says the company has raised $40 million in Series A funding. Because the page does not provide the round date, lead investor, terms or a complete financing history, the claim should be attributed to Highlight rather than presented as a fully independently documented financing record.

What the funding means for readers evaluating AI products
The $10 million spinout financing showed investor interest in a shift from passive, chat-based assistance toward context-aware desktop software. But funding alone does not establish product reliability, privacy safeguards, commercial availability or a sustainable pricing model.
For an individual seeking a clearly priced, immediately downloadable personal desktop assistant, the current public information is inconclusive: Highlight’s site presents a waitlist and no visible public pricing. For teams interested in shared memory and coordination across workplace applications, the current site presents a different proposition from the 2024 consumer-style assistant.
The fairest summary is that Highlight started as a Medal-originated desktop AI experiment, raised $10 million when it became independent, and later repositioned its public message around organizational intelligence and coordinated work.
