Amazon’s compensation process is real, but it is neither new nor an automatic payment for every defective product. Amazon expanded its A-to-z Guarantee in 2021 to cover valid claims involving personal injury or damage to other property caused by products purchased through Amazon.com. Separately, a 2025 U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) order required Amazon to notify customers and provide refunds for specified hazardous products.
The short answer
If an Amazon purchase simply does not work, is poor quality, or arrives damaged without causing additional harm, start with Amazon’s ordinary return, replacement, or refund process. If the product injured someone or damaged other property, contact Amazon Customer Service about an A-to-z personal-injury or property-damage claim.

That distinction matters. Headlines saying Amazon will “now compensate” customers can make the policy sound like a new 2026 program or a guaranteed cash payment. It is neither. Amazon announced the relevant A-to-z expansion in 2021, and claims are evaluated individually.
Amazon has two different forms of protection

Do not treat the two programs as interchangeable. The A-to-z Guarantee is a claims process for harm caused by a product. The CPSC order is a targeted recall-remediation process for named product categories.

What Amazon’s A-to-z Guarantee may cover
Amazon says customers can contact it when a product purchased through its store causes:
- Physical injury to the customer or another person; or
- Damage to property other than the product itself.
Amazon says it can facilitate communication among the customer, the third-party seller, and the seller’s insurer. It also says it will directly resolve and pay valid claims under $1,000. Amazon reported that claims below $1,000 represented more than 80% of cases when it announced the expanded process.
For higher-value claims, Amazon says it may intervene if the seller does not respond or rejects a claim Amazon considers valid. That is not a promise that Amazon will pay every claim above $1,000, and it does not mean every approved claim is worth $1,000.

What the $1,000 figure does—and does not—mean
The $1,000 figure is often presented misleadingly. It is a threshold for Amazon’s stated handling of valid injury and property-damage claims, not a coupon or guaranteed award for anyone who buys a defective item.
In practice:
- A product must be connected to identifiable injury or damage to other property.
- The claim must be supported by evidence and accepted as valid.
- The amount depends on the documented harm, not simply on the product’s purchase price or the existence of a defect.
- Amazon may consider higher-value claims in certain circumstances, but says it may intervene rather than guaranteeing payment.
Amazon also says claims may be reviewed using fraud and abuse systems and outside insurance specialists. An unsupported, inconsistent, or abusive claim can be denied.

What usually belongs in an ordinary return or refund
The A-to-z injury/property-damage process is not a substitute for Amazon’s normal customer-service remedies. A conventional return, replacement, or refund is generally the more appropriate starting point when:
- The item does not work but injured no one and damaged nothing else.
- The product is materially different from its listing.
- The item arrived damaged but caused no additional property damage.
- You no longer want the item.
- The delivery was late or the product was otherwise unsatisfactory.
A refund for the defective item is different from compensation for medical costs, repair bills, or other losses caused by that item. Inconvenience, lost time, or disappointment alone should not be assumed to qualify as an injury or property-damage claim.
Who is covered?
Amazon says the protection applies to physical products purchased through its store, including products sold by marketplace partners. For the practical guidance here, the main focus is Amazon.com and U.S. customers.

The seller relationship can vary:
- Sold by Amazon: Amazon is the listed seller.
- Sold by a marketplace seller, fulfilled by Amazon: A third-party seller made the sale, while Amazon handled storage and shipping.
- Sold and fulfilled by a marketplace seller: The third-party seller controls both the sale and fulfillment.
Amazon says sellers remain responsible for product safety and compliance and must maintain product-liability insurance under its seller requirements. Amazon may present a claim to the seller and its insurer, then may separately pursue the seller after addressing the customer’s claim.
Amazon says the guarantee was expanded beyond the U.S. to Canada, the United Kingdom, and the European Union in May 2024. Procedures and legal rights can differ in those markets, so U.S. guidance should not be assumed to apply internationally.

How to start an Amazon injury or property-damage claim
- Preserve the evidence. Keep the product, packaging, labels, instructions, and accessories when reasonably possible. Do not discard or alter the item merely because it is defective.
- Record the order details. Save the Amazon order number, purchase date, product listing, model or serial number, and seller name.
- Document the harm. Take photographs or video of the defect and resulting damage. Keep medical records and bills for an injury, or repair estimates and invoices for property damage.
- Contact Amazon Customer Service. Clearly state that the product allegedly caused personal injury or damage to other property; do not describe the matter only as a routine return.
- Explain the connection. Provide a factual account of how the product was used, what failed, when the incident occurred, and what harm followed.
- Respond to follow-up requests. Amazon may involve the marketplace seller, the seller’s insurer, claims specialists, or other reviewers.
- Keep a complete record. Save submitted documents, emails, case numbers, and notes of conversations.
Amazon’s general A-to-z Guarantee help page and its personal-injury and property-damage claims page provide the current customer-facing instructions. Amazon’s labels and account paths can change, so use the live pages when filing.

Evidence checklist
Gather as much of the following as applies:
- Amazon order number and purchase date
- Product listing, seller name, model number, and serial number
- Photographs or video of the defect and resulting harm
- The product and original packaging
- Medical records, bills, and treatment documentation
- Repair estimates, invoices, or replacement-cost records
- Evidence showing how the product was used
- Messages with Amazon, the seller, manufacturer, or insurer
- Any recall notice or safety alert
- Proof of destruction or disposal if a specific recall requires it
This is practical preparation, not an exhaustive statement of Amazon’s legal requirements. If a serious injury or major loss is involved, preserving the product may be especially important before following disposal instructions.
What the 2025 CPSC order covered
On January 17, 2025, the CPSC announced a final order involving more than 400,000 hazardous products sold by third-party sellers through Amazon’s Fulfilled by Amazon program. The order became effective January 26, 2025.
The covered categories were:
- Faulty carbon-monoxide detectors
- Hairdryers lacking required electrocution protection
- Children’s sleepwear that violated federal flammability standards
Under the order, Amazon had to notify original purchasers by email and through the Your Orders page. For a covered product, the remediation included a full purchase-price refund when the consumer provided proof of destruction or disposal. Recall information also had to remain available for at least five years.

This was not a general settlement or a finding that Amazon must compensate every person harmed by every marketplace product. It applied to specified products covered by the order. Read the CPSC announcement and order summary for the covered categories and recall instructions.
What if Amazon denies the claim?
A denial through Amazon’s process does not necessarily resolve every possible claim or legal remedy. Depending on the facts and jurisdiction, you can:
- Ask what evidence or information was missing and use Amazon’s available customer-service or review process.
- Contact the seller, manufacturer, or relevant product-liability insurer directly.
- Report a dangerous product or product-related injury through SaferProducts.gov.
- Consult a qualified product-liability attorney if the injury is serious, the property loss is substantial, or causation is disputed.
Do not assume that an Amazon claim process replaces claims against a seller, manufacturer, insurer, or another potentially responsible party. Deadlines and legal options vary by state and by claim type, so avoid relying on a generic deadline for a specific case.
