There is no reliable, verified list of the highest-paid player at each EFL League One club for 2026/27 in the available public sources. Salary websites publish estimates, but one widely circulated 24-club table includes Leicester City and Notts County—clubs the FA listed in different divisions during its 2025/26 reporting period. Treat the figures below as claims made by salary trackers, not confirmed player pay.
What Salary Sport lists—and why it is not a current League One ranking
Salary Sport presents the following as the highest-paid player at each club on its League One page. The amounts are the site’s estimated weekly figures in pounds; they are not official disclosures. The page’s list cannot be used as a verified 2026/27 League One table: it includes Leicester City and Notts County, which the FA separately listed in the Championship and League Two, respectively, for its reporting period of 4 February 2025 to 2 February 2026. The FA list is itself a past-period check, not proof of 2026/27 membership.
| Club shown on Salary Sport | Player shown | Estimated weekly amount |
|---|---|---|
| Leicester City | Boubakary Soumaré | £58,000 |
| Sheffield Wednesday | Barry Bannan | £23,000 |
| Leyton Orient | Alfie Gilchrist | £23,000 |
| Milton Keynes Dons | Daniel Barlaser | £20,000 |
| Stockport County | Ben Osborn | £19,000 |
| Doncaster Rovers | Alfie May | £19,000 |
| Wycombe Wanderers | Steve Cook | £18,000 |
| Oxford United | Cameron Brannagan | £16,000 |
| Luton Town | Kasey Palmer | £13,000 |
| Blackpool | Dion Charles | £12,000 |
| Huddersfield Town | Bali Mumba | £9,500 |
| Mansfield Town | Michael Smith | £9,000 |
| Reading | Mark O’Mahony | £8,900 |
| Plymouth Argyle | Alex Mitchell | £8,500 |
| Bromley | Damola Ajayi | £8,400 |
| Stevenage | Harry Cornick | £8,200 |
| Bradford City | MacAulay Gillesphey | £7,900 |
| Burton Albion | Raphael Borges Rodrigues | £7,700 |
| AFC Wimbledon | Brodi Hughes | £7,500 |
| Cambridge United | Gassan Ahadme | £6,200 |
| Peterborough United | Thomas O’Connor | £5,600 |
| Wigan Athletic | Christian Saydee | £5,400 |
| Barnsley | Connor O’Riordan | £5,400 |
| Notts County | Dean Campbell | £4,400 |
Those are estimates displayed by Salary Sport, not independently verified weekly wages. The table’s apparent coverage of 24 clubs does not establish that it matches the division’s 2026/27 membership or that every player and club entry is current.
What the official club lists can—and cannot—confirm
The FA’s report of football-agent fees covers the period from 4 February 2025 to 2 February 2026. Its League One club list for that period names AFC Wimbledon, Barnsley, Blackpool, Bolton Wanderers, Bradford City, Burton Albion, Cardiff City, Doncaster Rovers, Exeter City, Huddersfield Town, Leyton Orient, Lincoln City, Luton Town, Mansfield Town, Northampton Town, Peterborough United, Plymouth Argyle, Port Vale, Reading, Rotherham United, Stevenage, Stockport County, Wigan Athletic and Wycombe Wanderers. It separately lists Leicester City in the Championship and Notts County in League Two.

That is useful evidence that the Salary Sport page’s club set does not align with the FA’s divisions for its reporting period. It is not a definitive 2026/27 membership list, because the reporting period predates that season. The EFL announced publication of its 2026/27 squad list and U21 registered contract players on 8 September 2026. That list can help establish registrations, but the announcement does not publish salaries. See the FA report and the EFL squad-list announcement.
Why published estimates do not agree
FootyStats displays 2026/27 as a selectable season, but says its salary data was last verified for 2025/26. It names Calum Chambers as the league’s highest-paid player in its estimate, at €1,896,959 per year. The same page lists Bailey Peacock-Farrell at €1,363,439 and Marcus Forss and Gabriel Osho at €1,244,880 each. These are annual euro estimates tied to the site’s stated 2025/26 verification, not verified 2026/27 salaries. They should not be compared directly with Salary Sport’s pound-per-week estimates.

A figure may also mean something different depending on what a publisher counts. The EFL’s 2025/26 regulations define “Basic Wage” as minimum guaranteed weekly pay before bonuses or other contingent payments. The regulations’ broader definition of individual player salary costs includes forms of consideration, remuneration, wages and benefits provided directly or indirectly. A tracker using “salary,” “wage,” “basic wage” or “salary cost” may therefore be describing a different measure. The definitions appear in the EFL regulations.
When comparing estimates, check the season and date captured, whether the figure is verified or estimated, whether it covers guaranteed basic pay or broader remuneration, whether it is gross or net, and whether it is weekly or annual. For a player on loan, also check how the source allocates any wage responsibility between the parent and borrowing clubs. The available figures do not establish those details consistently enough to produce a like-for-like all-club ranking.

League One spending limits are not individual salaries
For 2026/27, the EFL says the ordinary League One wage-to-turnover limit changed from 60% to 50%, with manager costs included; clubs relegated from the Championship have a 65% allowance in their first season. These are controls on club costs, not a way to calculate a particular player’s pay. Likewise, the FA’s report records £14,041,489 in net football-agent fees for League One clubs over 4 February 2025 to 2 February 2026. That is agent-fee expenditure, not player wages. The EFL’s explanation of the rule changes is in its announcement; its wider rules and governance FAQ summarizes the financial controls.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Who is the highest-paid player in League One?
The sources do not establish a definitive 2026/27 answer. FootyStats identifies Calum Chambers as its highest-paid player estimate, but dates its salary data to 2025/26; Salary Sport offers a conflicting club table whose clubs do not match the FA’s division list for its reporting period. Neither source provides a verified, consistently defined salary dataset for all 24 current League One clubs. A reliable ranking would need current club membership, registered players, a transparent estimate method, and clear treatment of bonuses and loan wages.
