Brett Adcock is a serial technology entrepreneur whose career has moved through three increasingly difficult businesses: Vettery, an online talent marketplace; Archer Aviation, an electric vertical-takeoff-and-landing aircraft company; and Figure, a humanoid-robotics startup. The pattern is notable not because every prediction has been proven, but because Adcock repeatedly entered large markets, recruited aggressively, and used software, capital, and ambitious technical goals to attack problems that were difficult to solve.

His story begins with small internet businesses built during school, reaches a reported $110 million company acquisition, and then moves into aircraft and embodied artificial intelligence. It is also a useful reminder to separate a founder’s account of events from independently documented milestones, company projections, valuations, and completed commercial outcomes.

Who is Brett Adcock?

Brett Adcock is a technology entrepreneur associated with Vettery, Archer Aviation, and Figure. He grew up in central Illinois on what he has described as a third-generation corn and soybean farm. New Atlas reported that he was his high-school valedictorian and that he began building small web businesses at about age 16. These details come primarily from founder interviews and biographies, so they are best treated as reported background rather than independently audited records.

Adcock has said that farm life taught him to create value with limited starting resources. That idea provides a more useful interpretation of his upbringing than the familiar “farm boy becomes tech visionary” storyline: his early experience appears to have reinforced experimentation, self-reliance, and attention to practical value.

According to his official biography, Adcock later focused on building technology companies rather than pursuing a conventional professional path. His career, however, is not a continuous technical progression. Recruiting marketplaces, electric aircraft, and humanoid robots require very different expertise. The transferable skill is more likely company formation: identifying a large problem, assembling a team, raising capital, and attempting to move quickly.

Early businesses: learning through small experiments

Adcock told New Atlas that his early projects included:

  • A website selling outdoor electronics
  • Street of Walls, a finance-career and interview-preparation website
  • Working App, a mobile job-application service
  • A video-interviewing website
  • Other small software and internet businesses, some profitable and some unsuccessful

The important point is not that every project succeeded. There is no basis for treating these ventures as a guaranteed path to wealth. Their significance is that they gave Adcock repeated exposure to customer demand, product development, online distribution, and failure before he attempted much more capital-intensive companies.

This is a common but often overlooked part of entrepreneurial success: early experiments can build judgment without requiring the founder to risk the scale of capital later needed for aerospace or robotics. They can also reveal whether someone enjoys the operating work of building a company, rather than merely the idea of entrepreneurship.

Vettery: the decisive business-model pivot

Adcock and Adam Goldstein launched Vettery in 2012. The company initially built software for third-party recruiting companies. According to Adcock’s account, that model did not grow quickly enough, leading to several changes in direction.

The decisive pivot removed traditional recruiters from the center of the process and connected job seekers directly with companies through a marketplace. Vettery said its software and machine-learning systems helped make matches between candidates and employers. Adcock told New Atlas that user growth accelerated after the change.

The business lesson is more specific than “Adcock founded a successful recruiting company.” Vettery changed from selling tools to recruiters into operating a two-sided marketplace. That created a different set of growth dynamics:

The positions of the stickers correspond to the compartments of the product, making it easy to store and access; the exquisite box is suitable as a gift for professionals and amateurs who often repair furniture, lamps, electrical appliances, etc.
  • Direct participation: Employers and candidates could interact on the platform instead of relying entirely on intermediary recruiting firms.
  • Data and matching: More activity could potentially improve recommendations and matching.
  • Network effects: More employers could attract more candidates, while more candidates could make the service more valuable to employers.
  • Operational complexity: A marketplace still requires sales, recruiting expertise, customer support, and enough liquidity on both sides.

It would be too simple to attribute Vettery’s progress to machine learning alone. A matching algorithm cannot create a functioning marketplace if there are too few employers, unsuitable candidates, weak sales execution, or insufficient demand for hiring. The successful pivot appears to have combined product changes with commercial execution.

Vettery’s reported scale and exit

New Atlas reported that by 2017 Vettery had approximately 300 employees, around 20,000 customers, and about 30,000 interviews per month. Those figures come from the founder-centered profile and should be understood as reported company metrics, not as independently audited measurements.

The Adecco Group acquired Vettery in 2018 for a reported $110 million, according to Adcock’s official biography and the New Atlas profile. Figure’s older master-plan page rounded the transaction to $100 million. The discrepancy is best explained as rounding or differing descriptions of the deal value.

That amount refers to the reported acquisition price for Vettery. It does not establish Adcock’s personal proceeds, net worth, or ownership percentage. A company sale price can be divided among founders, employees, investors, and other shareholders, and may also be affected by deal terms.

Adcock’s biography also says Vettery acquired Hired.com in 2020 and changed its name to Hired. That later development is separate from the 2018 Adecco acquisition and does not change the basic significance of Vettery in Adcock’s career: it gave him experience with a marketplace business and the financial resources and credibility to pursue harder physical-world problems.

Why Adcock moved from software to hardware

After Vettery, Adcock said he wanted to work on more difficult, capital-intensive problems. His stated selection process involved choosing an industry, identifying its major problems, estimating the capital and team required, and defining what success would mean.

He chose hardware and sustainability, with a particular interest in transportation and traffic. The thesis behind Archer was that moving some urban transportation into three-dimensional airspace could reduce pressure on crowded roads. That led him to electric vertical-takeoff-and-landing aircraft, or eVTOLs.

This transition matters because it shows both the strength and the risk of his approach. A successful software exit can provide money, networks, and confidence. It does not automatically provide expertise in aircraft certification, flight testing, manufacturing, battery systems, safety regulation, or aviation operations. Those capabilities must be built or recruited.

Archer Aviation: speed, talent, and electric aircraft

Adcock and Goldstein co-founded Archer Aviation. Archer recruited aerospace and technology specialists, including people associated with Airbus’s Vahana program and Kitty Hawk, according to New Atlas. The strategy was to begin with an experienced technical organization rather than develop every capability from scratch.

Archer’s early program included Maker, a full-scale two-seat autonomous prototype, and later Midnight, a larger five-seat aircraft. The company also announced relationships involving Fiat Chrysler, later Stellantis, and commercial commitments or provisional orders involving United Airlines. Those announcements were important milestones, but commitments and orders should not be confused with delivered aircraft, completed sales, regulatory certification, or profitable operations.

In September 2021, Archer announced that it had begun trading on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol ACHR. The company said the transaction generated approximately $857.6 million in gross proceeds, including a $600 million private investment in public equity. The company announcement described Archer’s mission as developing all-electric aircraft for urban air mobility.

Adcock’s biography describes Archer as reaching a $2.7 billion public-market valuation. That figure refers to the valuation associated with the listing, not to $2.7 billion in revenue, earnings, or cash generated by the business. Public-market valuation is an expectation about future value and can change substantially before a company reaches commercial scale.

Why did Brett Adcock leave Archer?

Archer announced on April 18, 2022, that Adam Goldstein would become sole chief executive officer. Archer’s second-quarter 2022 regulatory filing identifies April 13, 2022, as Adcock’s separation date and describes him as the former co-CEO.

Adcock told New Atlas that he and the board were no longer aligned and that he wanted to focus on artificial intelligence and robotics. The available evidence supports a leadership transition and Adcock’s explanation of strategic misalignment. It does not support a more definite claim that he left because Archer failed or that there was a documented internal dispute of a particular kind.

This distinction is important. A founder can leave a company that continues operating, and a leadership transition does not by itself prove either success or failure. Archer’s subsequent progress depends on certification, manufacturing, financing, safety, customer adoption, and unit economics—not simply on which executive held the CEO title in 2022.

What is Figure?

Adcock founded Figure in 2022 as a humanoid-robotics company. Its stated goal is to create general-purpose humanoid robots and give artificial intelligence a physical body. Figure’s master plan, published in 2022, describes three broad stages:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Build a feature-complete electromechanical humanoid.
  2. Achieve human-like manipulation.
  3. Integrate humanoid robots into the labor force.

The appeal of a humanoid form is straightforward: factories, warehouses, stores, and homes are already designed for human height, reach, tools, doors, shelves, and workstations. A robot that can operate in those spaces may not require every workplace to be rebuilt.

The technical challenge is much greater than making a machine walk. A useful workplace robot must manipulate objects reliably, understand changing environments, recover from errors, operate safely near people, manage power and maintenance, and perform tasks at a cost that makes economic sense. It also needs software, training data, fleet management, customer integration, and a clear approach to liability.

Figure’s official biography says the company is targeting manufacturing, logistics, warehousing, retail, and home applications. It also identifies BMW as its first commercial customer. These are company claims and should not be read as proof that Figure’s robots are already broadly deployed or economically proven across those industries.

What the 2023 Figure profile actually established

At the time of the New Atlas interview, published October 2, 2023, Figure was described as having roughly 60 employees, about $70 million in funding, and a walking humanoid prototype. The company was aiming to place robots in warehousing and logistics by the end of 2024.

That last point was a historical target, not a confirmed result. The article should not present it as evidence that commercial deployment occurred on schedule. Figure’s own culture page provides an important counterweight to optimistic timelines: it acknowledges that successful humanoid commercialization had not yet been achieved and that building a company at global scale could take decades.

The distinction between a demonstration, a pilot, and a commercial product is crucial:

  • Demonstration: Shows that a robot can perform a task under selected conditions.
  • Pilot: Tests the system in a customer environment, usually with limited scope and substantial human oversight.
  • Commercial deployment: Requires reliable performance, support, safety procedures, repeatable manufacturing, and economics acceptable to the customer.

Figure’s long-term vision may be plausible without its short-term commercial timetable being certain. Ambition and validation are different things.

The recurring pattern in Adcock’s career

Adcock’s career can be interpreted as a recurring company-building playbook:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Start with experimentation. Small web businesses provided low-cost opportunities to test demand and learn how products reached customers.
  2. Pivot when the model is not working. Vettery moved from software for recruiting companies toward a direct employer-candidate marketplace.
  3. Recruit for speed. Archer’s early strategy emphasized bringing in experienced aerospace talent from established programs.
  4. Choose a large market. Recruiting, urban transportation, and industrial labor are all economically significant problems.
  5. Raise capital around a substantial future. Public listings, strategic relationships, and funding can provide resources before a product reaches mass adoption.
  6. Move toward the next frontier. After leaving Archer, Adcock turned his attention to embodied AI and humanoid robotics.

This pattern does not prove that one person alone created the outcomes. Adam Goldstein was a key co-founder of Vettery and Archer, while engineers, operators, investors, partners, and regulators shaped the companies’ results. The more defensible description of Adcock may be founder, recruiter, capital allocator, and company architect rather than lone technical inventor.

What remains unproven

The strongest test of Adcock’s model is not the number of companies founded or headlines generated. It is whether difficult technical ventures can become durable businesses.

For Archer, the unresolved questions include aircraft certification, manufacturing at scale, safe operations, infrastructure, customer demand, and the cost of providing air-taxi services. For Figure, the questions include manipulation reliability, battery life, maintenance, workplace safety, training data, customer integration, and cost per operating hour.

Several apparent milestones should therefore be kept separate from final outcomes:

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • A prototype is not a mass-produced product.
  • A partnership is not necessarily a completed commercial sale.
  • A public listing is not proof of profitability.
  • A valuation is not revenue or cash flow.
  • A fundraising round is not customer validation.
  • A founder’s forecast is not a verified result.

That does not make the milestones unimportant. They can demonstrate access to capital, recruiting strength, strategic interest, or technical progress. They simply answer different questions from whether a company has achieved reliable, profitable, large-scale operations.

The bottom line on Brett Adcock

Brett Adcock’s career is best understood as a progression from low-cost internet experimentation to marketplace execution and then to ambitious physical technologies. Vettery demonstrated the value of a business-model pivot and ended in a reported $110 million Adecco acquisition. Archer showed Adcock applying capital and recruiting power to aviation, culminating in a 2021 NYSE listing. Figure represents the most ambitious step yet: building general-purpose humanoid robots for work.

The recurring advantage appears to be speed in choosing a large problem and assembling a team around it. The recurring risk is that vision, financing, prototypes, and public milestones can arrive before technical and commercial validation. Whether the model ultimately succeeds will depend less on the narrative of rapid company creation than on whether Archer and Figure can turn difficult engineering programs into safe, repeatable, economically viable products.
