Here’s a List of Everything Elon Musk Says He’ll Do by 2030

The 2017 list of Elon Musk’s goals was a historical snapshot, not a current roadmap. See which Tesla, SpaceX, Boring Company, and Neuralink targets were achieved, delayed, or remain speculative—and why that distinction matters for financial decisions.

The list of Elon Musk’s plans for 2030 comes from a November 22, 2017, Futurism article—not a current company roadmap. Some targets were reached, while others were missed, delayed, or were aspirations rather than firm commitments. For financial decisions, distinguish operating businesses and results from forecasts that remain speculative.

The list covered Tesla, SpaceX, The Boring Company, and Neuralink. The tables below compare its targets with the outcomes described in the research desk’s August 9, 2026 review.

The Tesla and energy targets

Tesla accounted for much of the 2017 list. Some manufacturing milestones were eventually reached, but autonomy and range targets were not met on schedule.

2017 target What happened Financial relevance
Complete South Australia’s giant battery within 100 days Achieved. The 100-MW/129-MWh Hornsdale Power Reserve was completed on December 1, 2017, according to the Hornsdale Power Reserve FAQ. A defined, short-term infrastructure target was delivered on time.
Begin Solar Roof deliveries by the end of 2017 The product became orderable and installable, but the original mass-delivery timetable was not met. Tesla’s 2017 filing described the product and its installation process as still under development (Tesla 2017 filing). Announcing a product is not the same as achieving profitable, repeatable production.
Produce 5,000 Model 3s per week by March 2018 Missed initially during production setbacks, but Tesla reached a 5,000-per-week production rate in 2018, according to the original Futurism article. A delayed target can create cash-flow and execution risk even if it is eventually reached.
Reach Level 5 autonomy before 2020 Not achieved. Tesla markets its customer-facing system as “Full Self-Driving (Supervised),” which requires driver supervision. That is not Level 5 autonomy (Tesla’s 2016 plan). Do not value autonomy as though technical capability and regulatory approval are already secured.
Produce 1 million vehicles per year by 2020 Not achieved. Tesla produced 509,737 vehicles and delivered approximately 499,550 in 2020, according to Tesla’s 2020 results. The result was roughly half the target, illustrating the risk of relying on ambitious forecasts.
Give Tesla vehicles 1,000 km of range by 2020 Not achieved as a normal production-vehicle specification. Tesla has not published a 1,000-km EPA-rated production model (Futurism’s original report). Range claims need a test standard, vehicle configuration, and production date.
Create a Tesla fleet-mobility service in 2020 Tesla has not launched the owner-operated autonomous fleet described in its 2016 Master Plan. Potential future fleet revenue remains speculative, not current household or investment income.
Build a Tesla factory in China by roughly 2020–21 Achieved early. Model 3 production began at Gigafactory Shanghai in 2019, with deliveries following shortly afterward (Tesla’s 2020 production and delivery release). This became a production asset, unlike an unbuilt concept or forecast.
Install 1,000 Superchargers in China Not cleanly verifiable from the original wording: Tesla reports charging locations and individual connectors separately, and the target did not clearly define which measure “1,000” meant (Futurism’s original report). Locations, stalls, connectors, and sites are not interchangeable units.

Tesla’s vehicle promises

Target Status
Begin Tesla Semi production in 2019 Missed. Initial production began in 2022, with first customer deliveries to PepsiCo in December 2022 (TechCrunch). As of the research desk’s August 2026 review, Tesla’s Semi page said broader deliveries would start in 2026.
Unveil an electric pickup truck by 2019 Achieved late: Tesla unveiled the Cybertruck in November 2019, but production and deliveries began years later.
Launch Model Y in 2019 Missed narrowly. Tesla began Model Y deliveries in March 2020 (Tesla).
Release the second-generation Roadster in 2020 Not achieved. The Roadster remained unreleased after the target and was still listed as “in development” in Tesla’s 2020 filing (Tesla 2020 filing).
Release a Tesla “Model F” flying car Not a genuine Tesla plan. The item came from an April Fools joke, as the original article noted.

A product can be real even when its original timetable is wrong. A delayed vehicle may eventually generate sales, but investors who price those sales years before delivery take on financing, competition, execution, and demand risk.

SpaceX and the Mars timeline

Musk’s Mars goals were among the most ambitious items in the 2017 list. They remain long-term objectives rather than completed milestones.

Target What happened
Send the first cargo mission to Mars in 2022 Not achieved. As of the research desk’s August 2026 review, SpaceX’s Mars page listed Starship cargo missions as beginning “no earlier than 2028” (SpaceX).
Send the first crewed mission to Mars in 2024 Not achieved. SpaceX has not sent humans to Mars (SpaceX).
Use a Mars-capable BFR for cargo and crew The vehicle was renamed and redesigned as Starship. SpaceX describes Starship and Super Heavy as a fully reusable system intended for Earth orbit, the Moon, Mars, and beyond.
Create Earth-to-Earth rocket transportation There is no operational Earth-to-Earth passenger service. SpaceX describes rapid point-to-point travel as a potential Starship application.
Build a self-sufficient city on Mars This remains a long-term objective, not an achieved or fully scheduled 2030 deliverable. SpaceX says such a city would require more than one million people and millions of tonnes of cargo.

These plans are poor foundations for near-term financial decisions. SpaceX is private, Mars settlement has no established consumer revenue model, and a stated cargo timeline is not a guaranteed launch schedule. Do not make an emergency fund, retirement contribution, or debt repayment plan depend on a Mars-related forecast.

Rank #2

The Boring Company and Hyperloop

The 2017 article also covered underground transport and Hyperloop concepts. The Boring Company has an operating project, but not the broad Los Angeles network implied by early coverage.

Target or concept What happened
Build a transportation tunnel under Los Angeles The original article inferred that an LA tunnel could become operational within a few years, but did not cite a firm completion date. The Boring Company’s current operating project is the LVCC Loop in Las Vegas.
Expand tunnel transportation Partly achieved. The LVCC Loop is commercially operational, while the company lists approved or planned Vegas Loop and Nashville projects. The company describes the Vegas system as approved for 68 miles of tunnel and 104 stations (The Boring Company projects page).
Develop Hyperloop transportation Hyperloop was a Musk-associated concept that SpaceX and Tesla engineers helped publicize, not a clearly scheduled Tesla or SpaceX product with a 2030 delivery date.

When evaluating infrastructure claims, distinguish an operating demonstration from an approved project, construction, and a revenue-generating network. Those stages can be years and substantial capital apart.

Neuralink’s brain-computer interface

Neuralink has progressed beyond a concept, but its clinical work is narrower than the phrase “merge the human brain with artificial intelligence” suggests.

Claim Current status
Merge the human brain with AI Neuralink is pursuing an implanted brain-computer interface. Its investigational N1 implant is intended to let people with paralysis control external devices such as computers and smartphones using neural signals (Neuralink’s device-control trial page).
Put computers in people’s brains Partly achieved in clinical trials, not as a consumer product. Neuralink says the first participant received an implant in January 2024; the PRIME Study remains investigational and evaluates safety and basic device functionality.
Restore broader physical abilities Neuralink says future versions could control robotic arms, wheelchairs, and other assistive devices. These are development goals, not established consumer capabilities (Neuralink’s study update).

Clinical-trial progress is not the same as an approved medical product. Before treating a medical technology as a commercial business, look for regulatory status, trial results, safety data, pricing, reimbursement, and manufacturing capacity.

Other Musk predictions associated with 2030

Some frequently repeated claims came later and were not part of the 2017 article. Keep them separate from the original list.

  1. Tesla producing 20 million vehicles annually by 2030: This later projection is much larger than the 2017 one-million-vehicle forecast. It is Musk’s projection, not a guaranteed production plan (Tesla filing).
  2. Humanoid robots becoming a major part of Tesla: Musk has said Optimus could eventually be more valuable than Tesla’s automotive business. Tesla’s public robot program remains a development and manufacturing effort, not proof of mass consumer deployment (TechCrunch).
  3. AI surpassing all human intelligence around 2029 or 2030: This is a speculative forecast, not a dated company deliverable or independently verified prediction (Fact Check Joe Rogan).

How to use ambitious forecasts in a financial decision

  1. Separate the promise from the business. Ask whether the product exists, ships, has paying customers, and generates predictable cash flow.
  2. Record the original deadline. A target reached six years late should not be treated as an on-time forecast.
  3. Check the measurement. “1,000 Superchargers,” “full autonomy,” and “20 million vehicles” need clear definitions before comparison with results.
  4. Use scenarios rather than one forecast. Build a base case that does not require autonomous fleets, Mars revenue, or humanoid robots to succeed. Treat those outcomes as possible upside.
  5. Keep speculative exposure limited. Do not put money needed for rent, debt payments, emergencies, or near-term goals into a company or theme solely because its founder predicts rapid growth.

FAQ

Did Elon Musk achieve the goals he announced for 2030?

Some were achieved or partly achieved, including Tesla’s China factory, the Cybertruck unveiling, the Hornsdale battery, and Neuralink’s move into human clinical trials. Major targets such as Level 5 autonomy before 2020, one million Tesla vehicles in 2020, the second-generation Roadster, and crewed Mars missions were not achieved on the stated timetable.

Is the list of Musk’s 2030 plans a current Tesla or SpaceX roadmap?

No. It originated in a November 2017 Futurism article and combined forecasts, aspirations, product targets, and an April Fools joke. Read it as a historical snapshot, not a current company filing or guaranteed roadmap.

Can investors buy SpaceX, Neuralink, or The Boring Company stock?

These companies are private, so ordinary investors generally cannot buy their shares through a standard brokerage account. Tesla is publicly traded, but its valuation should not automatically assume every Musk forecast becomes a profitable Tesla business.

What is the safest way to evaluate a bold technology prediction?

Check whether the product is operating, has paying customers, has regulatory approval where needed, and produces measurable financial results. Base essential financial plans on income and assets that already exist; treat speculative forecasts as optional upside.

The Bottom Line

Musk’s 2017 list is a record of ambitious forecasts, not a set of commitments that all matured into products by 2030. Tesla delivered some manufacturing and energy milestones, while autonomy, ultra-long range, the owner-operated fleet, and the Roadster remained unresolved or late. SpaceX has not reached Mars, The Boring Company has a limited operating system rather than a broad network, and Neuralink’s progress remains clinical and investigational.

The personal-finance lesson is to assign value to operating results, not the most exciting version of a future plan. Keep essential financial goals independent of speculative timelines, and treat extraordinary forecasts as risks and possibilities—not money already earned.
