The MBA process includes two alumni interviews, each with a 10-minute applicant-chosen presentation; Master’s interviews are typically online conversations, with the Master in Management specifying a 30-minute Zoom interview in English. Start with the instructions for your exact program and intake, then shape essays and interview answers around specific experiences, clear motivation, and goals you can explain naturally.
First, identify your HEC program’s format
“HEC interview” can mean different things depending on the program. The MBA, Master’s programs, and Executive MBA have distinct admissions processes, so do not apply the MBA presentation requirement to a Master’s interview or assume that general Master’s guidance describes the EMBA.
| Program or guidance | Interview format described by HEC | What to prepare for |
|---|---|---|
| HEC Paris MBA | Two separate interviews with HEC Paris MBA alumni. Each includes a 10-minute oral presentation on a topic chosen by the applicant, followed by an in-depth discussion of the application. Interviews are in English and count equally in the decision. HEC Paris MBA admissions | A timed presentation and detailed discussion of your application. |
| General HEC Master’s interview guidance | Typically an online interview lasting 20 to 30 minutes with two HEC representatives, who may include faculty, alumni, or program directors. HEC Paris interview advice | Your application, motivation, critical thinking, and questions about the program or school. |
| Master in Management | For admissible candidates, a 30-minute online Zoom interview in English. HEC encourages discussion of background, motivation, interests, and goals. Master in Management admissions | A conversational interview about your profile and objectives; the page does not specify an MBA-style presentation. |
| Executive MBA | A separate admissions process that includes an interview and HEC Management Test after pre-selection. Executive MBA admissions | Check the current EMBA instructions for the interview’s exact format. |
These are the formats described on the linked HEC pages; admissions instructions can change. Confirm the requirements for your chosen program and intake before preparing around a specific duration, prompt, or presentation rule.
How to write HEC application essays
HEC says essay questions vary by program. Its advice is to begin with the exact prompts for the program you are applying to, rather than trying to fit your story into a generic admissions template. The essays are intended to reveal motivation, how you think, and your future vision. HEC Paris essay advice

Answer the question with a concrete experience
Choose an example that genuinely happened, whether it came from work, study, or an extracurricular activity. It need not be dramatic. Explain what you did, what the experience taught you, and how it affected your thinking or choices. A specific account gives the reader evidence for a quality or value; simply claiming to be resilient, curious, or collaborative does not.
Connect the experience to your goals
Make the link between the example and your future plans explicit. Show how what you learned informs the direction you want to take and, where the prompt invites it, what you hope to contribute. Keep the connection credible: the essay should show how your goals follow from your experience, not add a generic statement about wanting to make an impact.
Keep the voice recognizably yours
HEC advises applicants not to guess what admissions wants to hear or manufacture an impressive-sounding story. A sincere, well-chosen example is more persuasive than a polished answer that could belong to any applicant. Edit for clarity and precision without making your voice sound scripted.
Do not assume every HEC program asks for the same materials
HEC’s essay article says that the Master’s application it discusses does not require a motivation letter; motivation should emerge through the essay answers and interview. That point should not be generalized to every HEC program or intake. Follow the current checklist and prompts on the relevant program’s admissions page.

After its pre-selection review—which considers educational background, professional experience, international exposure, essays, and recommendation letters—HEC invites selected candidates to two separate interviews with MBA alumni. Each includes a 10-minute oral presentation on a topic of the candidate’s choice, followed by an in-depth discussion about the application. Both interviews are in English and have equal weight in the decision. HEC Paris MBA admissions
Choose a topic you can discuss with genuine interest
Because the topic is your choice, select one that gives you something meaningful to explain and discuss. It might draw on an experience, an idea, or an issue you know well. HEC’s admissions page does not prescribe a topic or a presentation structure, so there is no official formula to follow.

Give the talk a clear line of reasoning
As a practical approach, settle on the main point you want the listener to take away, then organize the supporting ideas so they lead to it. Use only the details needed to make your reasoning understandable. This is preparation advice inferred from the stated time limit, not a structure required by HEC.
Rehearse to the stated time
- Draft a simple outline, not a script you plan to recite word for word.
- Deliver the presentation aloud and time it from beginning to end.
- Trim or reorganize material until the talk fits the 10-minute slot and its point remains clear.
- Practice answering follow-up questions about the topic, then review your submitted application for the interview discussion.
A digital presentation timer can be an optional rehearsal aid; HEC does not require one. Reviewing your application matters because HEC describes the interview as including an in-depth discussion of it.
How to prepare for a Master’s interview
HEC’s general Master’s interview advice describes an online conversation that typically lasts 20 to 30 minutes and involves two HEC representatives. The interview may explore motivation and critical thinking, and submitted essays, experiences, and accomplishments may all come up. HEC’s guidance puts it plainly: “Every essay, experience, and accomplishment you have submitted is potential ground for discussion.” HEC Paris interview advice
Know what you submitted
Re-read your application, essays, and any claims about achievements or goals. Be ready to explain the choices behind them and to add relevant context. You do not need to memorize your written answers; you do need to be able to discuss them accurately and comfortably.
Practice speaking, not reciting
HEC recommends practicing aloud under simulated interview conditions, with a friend, mentor, or camera if useful. The purpose is to grow comfortable expressing your ideas, not to produce word-perfect answers. As HEC puts it, “Careful preparation and practice play a key role in building confidence for the interview, but memorization is not the goal.” HEC Paris interview advice
Prepare for themes, not a guaranteed script
HEC’s All Masters FAQ lists possible topics such as career objectives, recent business news, notable professional or extracurricular experiences, and questions applicants want to ask about the program. These are areas that may arise, not a promised sequence of interview questions. HEC also notes that applicants who prepare standard answers may be redirected to other topics. HEC All Masters FAQ

Bring thoughtful questions of your own
Prepare questions that help you understand the program, school culture, or learning experience. Ask about something relevant to your goals rather than relying on a question you could ask at any school. HEC recommends having meaningful questions ready; its guidance does not require particular equipment for the interview.
Keep the essay and interview consistent
HEC says motivation should emerge in essay answers and come to life in the interview. That means continuity in the substance of your story—not repeating a memorized essay aloud. If you describe a turning point, goal, or contribution in writing, be prepared to explain it conversationally, with the same facts and a clear account of why it matters to you.
The strongest preparation is therefore both program-specific and personal: work from the current instructions for your application, use real experiences to explain your choices, and practice expressing your thinking without trying to sound like a model answer.
